Does anyone here just support "the game" and not a particular club?

Yes OP I feel you. I was a die hard eagles fan as a little kid, I remember my little town going crazy after the two grand final wins. But we moved out of Australia for many years and when I came back all the players I loved had retired, and I didnt feel much connection with the new eagles. I even tried supporting freo for a while but they don't really do it for me.

Aussie rules is still my favourite sport in the world so I watch whenever I can but but I don't really support a team. I choose which team im going for during the actual match.

I have never read so much dribble in my life.

Supporting Freo is in your blood, you don't choose Freo unless you are a masochist,

If you were a die hard weagle fan, then you still would be. GTFO of here

Easily. Most sports I watch I don't have a favourite team, I merely watch it because I like the sport. Baseball, basketball, gridiron, soccer, rugby, cricket, the sports in the olympics, all of these sports don't really have a team I'm following. Afl is actually the exception to the rule, if anything.
The OP asked about AFL, not novelty sports punctuated by commercial breaks on TV in the USA. And Olympics is a completely different kettle of fish

I tend to only watch games Richmond plays or games between 2 top 4 teams or fierce rivals.

Other than that, will watch some of the finals and always watch the GF.

Couldn't imagine not supporting a team - surely even preferring one team's colours to the other would make this hard to do without favouring one team or the other? To be completely unbiased and neutral and support 'the game' - that is something completely foreign to me haha.

You asked if it's possible to support a sport yet not love any of the teams, I gave examples of sports that I love yet don't support any of the clubs. It's quite possible for someone to love football yet not follow any of the clubs. After all, it's one of the best games on earth.

I'm a Norwood Football Club supporter locally and they are and always will be my first and only love.

I have followed Adelaide since their inception but don't have the same love I do for my wonderful local club and it helps with my wagering and footy tipping that the head rules the heart on an AFL level!

Have to accept what you say about AFL as it is the greatest game on earth.

It's funny how you pick your team in the neutral games -

Quite often it goes along with your footy tipping, other times it's to do with ladder implications for your own club - sometimes I find myself going for teams that I didn't pick and will hurt our ladder position simultaneously.

It all depends on the moment!

Reminds me of watching the Eagles Blues match this year or last in which a blues win would have helped us make the top four...me and my dad were so confused. in the end we still wanted carlton to lose...it's hard to lose 20 odd years of being told to hate carlton
