Are people debating whether or not Sam Darcy would produce more than Rory Lobb? Really?
Darcy is an absolute unicorn and is going to be a freak. But it does feel like he's one of those players who gets better whenever he isn't in the team. He's shown some flashes of utter brilliance and is going to be extremely difficult to stop in the future, but he isn't close to ready to perform at AFL level yet. Lobb has clearly not been at full fitness/health but is building into the season strongly. He's a limited player, and if we're lining up attributes Darcy wins - but that's not how AFL is played. Lobb is playing a difficult role in the AFL team to a solid standard right now and Darcy is up and down at VFL level. Chalk and cheese.

Question for those who have seen the Artful Dodger in the VFL or as a junior:
What do you see as his ceiling? Does he have Eddie Betts tricks or Tom Papley style explosive play?
He looks great to me, but just wondering what else is in his back of tricks apart from pressure, nice hands and nimble feet.

Pressure, nice hands, nimble feet and an eye for goal. What more do you want from a small forward….

cant understand why anyone would think that someone as intelligent as Bevo would not self reflect. Might not do it publicly and nor should he.
First couple of rounds could simply be players not performing their roles not necessarily some tactic but like all good coaches he accepts public responsibility
First couple of rounds was squarely on Bevo and the coaches. They tried to implement a game plan that did not work. Players had a meeting with the coaches and relayed their concerns and they listened and changed things up. Closely listen to Bonts comments in round 2 and 3. It was encouraging Bevo did finally concede and accept responsibility. A welcome change.

I was by no means attacking him. He's my favourite player. I've also been calling for our forward entries to go through him more all season. I've also said he will be a weapon when he improves his ground game.

At times I feel Naughton is impeding JUH's game by jumping on his head when it's not his ball to mark. JUH is a great contested mark which is spoiled because of this.
I agree that Naughton launching for everything is something that doesn't help Jamarra and Lobb. We have further work to do on the forward setup.

I still absolutely and utterly despise the giants by the way.

Would not piss on them if they were on fire.
I wouldn’t waste good piss on that s**t club
I actually like them. Well...as much as I like any side other than ours. So not a lot.

They're finally starting to feel like a club that stands for something.

So I'll just piss in the toilet like a normal human being.

Good for them.

Remember when our banners weren't as anondyne as they are these days?

Bevo said in his presser last night that the forward line didn't work in the first two games and that they had to and did change it. It might have taken him a while to reveal that but kudos to him for changing the structure and for explaining it to us. I just wish we had more from Bevo in the media like last night's great performance. He was outstanding and clearly enjoyed the intelligent questioning and analysis from one of the young journos.

I'm quick to give Bevo a clip when he doesn't deliver but I should also acknowledge that he's made adjustments to our structure and plan and has also made some good in-game adjustments. Bevo is in good form right now and we are benefiting from it big time.

Tell me more about the young journo and their line of questioning?!
I don't have the time to precis, to be honest, but the presser is on the club's and the AFL's websites.

Not sure what many were expecting last night but for me the script played out exactly as I thought it would. GWS truly believed they'd knock us off and on the back of a great win the week before against the Swans would get their season up and going.
Sure it was a little disappointing we leaked the first 4 goals of the last quarter but we found a way to stop the run and kick away again.

How friggin good was that play from Arty Jones on the wing late in the game that lead to Naughts second goal in the last quarter. It show cased all of his abilities, clean ball handling under pressure in wet conditions, agility to avoid multiple opponents, poise to hold the ball whilst being tackled and not give it off to the first team mate he saw and skill to execute an inside 50 kick to the advantage of Naughts..... This kid is special and will become a cult hero if he's not already.

With our dearth of genuine small forwards in some ways their hand was forced in the first few games with our best small forward not being available. However addressing Weightmans absence by playing 4 tall forwards was utter hubris and destined to failure. Im glad that they came to their senses and junked the idea before the season spun out of control. I mentioned it earlier in this thread, but I dont think it's an accident that our form has been on an upswing with the return of Weightman and the throwing of Jones into the deep end. Their enthusiasm is completely natural and somewhat at odds with a team that is prone to introversion when the going gets a little tough.

It was the footy IQ in that play for me, just about every single player we’ve rolled through that position over the past 3 years would have dumped it forward immediately, probably intercepted and put straight back over our heads. But he held possession, stopped, brought some time, assessed there was no other options and he had to go and actually put it to Naughtys slight advantage inbetween two defenders.

I hope that play is ****ing burnt into Bevs brain as to why you can’t play sloppy inside mids in half forward roles. It’s a high impact, low possession role - we don’t need 20 disposals there a game, we need 10 effective disposals.

Pulled up some stats which Bevo wasn't too keen on dealing with at the time.

Brought up scoring from clearances, forward structure/pressure and scoring from d50. Which led to Bevo essentially saying the 4 talls thing was a mistake and we have much better balance up fwd now with our ability to apply pressure.

Think Bevo did appreciate the quality of the questions while being his typical brash self when confronted with some statistics that he may not have liked. Or maybe didn't want to discuss publicly. But he did get engaged.

My impression was he was tired and just wanted to get the **** out of there. It was a 14 minute presser which is extremely long by his usual standards, had a plane to catch in the morning etc. He said after the first one that it was a little too complex for him straight after the game, but then his grumpiness subsided and he bantered a little bit with the guy.

It was also good to see some better forward craft from naughton.

Pressed back then doubled up at the ball.

We haven't seen that sort of craft and connection for some time, and hopefully it is a sign of more to come.

Was one of the games highlights. I don't think either player, Jones or Naughts, could actually have played it any better. Especially Jones. It was revealing for a player with little exposed form at the level.

It was the sort of play and connection that gives you a glimpse and a sense of excitement about what could be. There was a glimpse of similar hope and connection in the Freo game with Marra and Naughts.

 Do we give Spanger any credit?

The "Clayton" award?

From the mentions that I've heard the only reason Spangher is there is due to the financial hit the club took during the Covid years, Spangher came onboard at "mates rates"

I dont see him as a viable long term option

I thought Bailey Dale rushing the behind was a big step forward for the defence. In the recent past that has often turned to a panic long bomb or a handball to a bloke under the pump.

I want to see more of that from our back men.
I agree.

I was triggered though when English did the short snap to his direct opponent.

Gotta be the most dangerous play in the game. Guys have gotta drop punt their rushed clearance kicks. It travels further ffs

Agree. Oliver will be the danger I think. As good as Bont has been, Oliver is likely on the same votes currently. Daicos is a gun but it’s hard to see teams continuing to let him run free.
With respect to Oliver who’s a gun. If Bont came second again to an Oliver/Wines type I think there should be an overdue royal commission on the award

I don't know Mike and may never. These little glimpses. The forward line definitely has potential and maybe he has an odd shaped key that will help unlock it.

Who would you rather? A stress head like the GWS coach who's uptight energy might be counter-productive, or a chilled out dude who looks like he enjoys a surf and a special cigarette occasionally.

Different strokes. He might actually be the right guy for this group. I actually have NFI though to be fair.

If we keep winning at a decent level this year you have to think Bont has a real shot at the Brownlow
Not unless other teams actually tag Daicos, who will probably run away with it on current form. Bont is probably behind him at the moment, and likely neck and neck with Oliver. Bont has a good shot this year, but we will have to win most of the games and Bont avoid his few game quiet patches he has most years.

Our forward line looked the best it has in a while against Fremantle imo. We've drifted from that over the past fortnight.

Seems to be just as much of a midfield/running defence issue.

Sam Frost has some serious leg speed, Marra had about 2-3 metres on him in most leads last week yet it went over his head to Naughton or Lobb.

Case in point is Bont putting it out front of Marra twice in a row last night where he marked the first but dropped the second (from memory).

Kick it to the forwards advantage and we'll be way more potent imo

Olivers main issue is that Petracca has also been outstanding in several games this year and will take votes.

In the coaches award, they have consistently been the 2 highest votegetters in Melbourne games, with Petracca on 33 (same as Bont) and Oliver on 29.
