Why is Don Pyke a spud?

I get what you're saying, of course, but - if we're playing kids, they're developing and the style of footy is worth watching / showing results / offering promise for the future, then I won't find it "painful" at all. What's painful is watching the old guard getting beaten.
I agree. If you have to endure losing, there is a consolation prize of knowing the youth are being developed. Watching the old guys fail makes the whole thing feel like there's no light at the end of the tunnel.

Interesting old article

I vaguely remember reading something that he and one other are on staff (but will stand corrected on this)

I vaguely recall him extending for a 2-3 years between end of season 2015 and recruitment of Pyke. I remember being a bit excited that the period was coming to an end and figured he'd get his marching orders. But there was no extension announcement and his marching orders got lost somewhere. I suppose the 2 years was up after the GF appearance. Would have thought there'd have been a bit of fanfare about re-signing our midfield coach after such a successful season. Anyway, presumably he got another couple of years, which might mean he's up now or next year if he got 3.

Found it

Must be nice to have a coach with some vision

"We haven't really been geared that way at all (thinking of finals) … and that doesn't change from round one to round 23," Clarkson said.
"We're trying to put the personnel and methodology together that will give us enough confidence that the steps we're taking are the ones in the right direction for us, in terms of building our next premiership side.
"If in that process of doing that you get enough wins and that has you qualifying for finals then great, but … it's not so much about the importance of this game to win it, because we have to give ourselves a chance."

I wonder if we 'promoted' Camporeale into that made up senior strategy adviser role or whatever it's called so that we can make him and the position redundant?
Supposedly the setup we have now is what Pyke wanted the entire time he's been here, it just took 3 seasons for him to get kt. 4 line coaches, senior strategy coach and then himself. We were paying a huge amount to ROK to be our SANFL coach though, so they didn't want to break the cap to hire another assistant. Fagan claims that Pyke wanted Campo in the senior position, but he'd hardly say otherwise either.

How depressing is it that a successful guy like Clarkson has the complete opposite approach to our “play the experienced guys, make the eight and anything can happen” way of thinking.

Yes but - with 4 flags already I’m guessing that Clarkson has the leeway to do exactly what he wants to do

We got close in 2017 and have been trying to squeeze another tilt out of roughly the same team. I think our “make the eight and anything can happen” is the tail end of that, and maybe Pyke doesn’t have the support to do anything different

However I think it’s becoming clearer that behind the scenes there’s a recognition that some level of rebuild is in order

It's not the tail end of Pyke's plan. It has been sprouted by the club since Craig's days. It's the club mantra.

Imagine they finally give you the set up you want and then put Campo where you wanted Sumich to go

Roo said it, Chapman said it, everyone at the club believes it. As long as we are a mathematical chance at making the 8, the priority is to make the 8 because finals are a clean slate and anything can happen (then when we can't make the 8 we'll probably bring back the seniors for farewell games or some rubbish)

I don't know that I believe in limited premiership windows, aiming to peak for a couple of years and then dropping back down, but I do believe in identifying some long term problems, not being afraid of a little short term pain to reset and get things right going forward.

Clarkson knows that to win multiple premierships (or sometimes, even just one) you usually have to have a sustained period - I’m talking at least four-five years - where you’re at the pointy end of the finals. And I mean either making grand finals or just missing them. He knows that to snare two or three flags you probably have to make five to six prelims. You can’t rely on everything just coming together once-off, because a finals series has very small margins for error. Look at Richmond last year.

In fact if you look at all the clubs in the AFL era who have won multiple flags in an era, they all made a tonne of prelim finals (except us really). North Melbourne made seven for their two flags, Brisbane five for three, Geelong five for three, Hawthorn six for four.

The Crows’ flags were really an anomaly - we weren’t even competitive in the years directly prior and the years directly after, let alone making prelims.

Clarkson knows what it takes to win a flag and he knows when they’re not in contention. He knew last year (even though they actually still made the finals) and he knows this year.

Us on the other hand...

And they were strange years at that.

We didn’t dominate the comp at all during that period. 8 good weeks for 2 flags. Bizarre really.

Then we have 05/06/12/17 where we finish top 2 but can’t get it done.
