He was director and spokesman for a sandalwood grower and seller in WA listed on the ASX. The figures were fudged to make the company look profitable when it wasn't. Eventually it was exposed as a Ponzi scheme and I along with many other people lost all I had invested. I won't forgive Gilchrist for his promotional role. Great batsman and keeper but he turned me off sandalwood for life.

Sorry you lost money but Quintis wasn't anything like a Ponzi scheme. To call it that is doing Gilchrist a disservice. After loading up on debt to expand, their Chinese customer base blew up and they got smacked into oblivion by short sellers. Poor management decisions maybe, but there was no dishonesty as far as I can recall.

There are two class actions against Quintis alleging dishonesty by the company and CEO Frank Wilson. The valuation of the trees and the inclusion of plantation establishment fees was alleged to have substantially inflated the true value of the company. Shareholders were also not informed of the loss of major sources of revenue such as the loss of Chinese buyers and a lost contract supplying dermatology company Galderma was not reported to market till 4 months later.

Short sellers didn't bring down the company. An activist short selling company called Glaucus exposed the Ponzi like nature of the company's valuations.

A bit of research should enlighten you regarding the dishonest elements at play in the company's reporting. The Chinese customer base 'blew up' because the buyers were smuggling the timber into the country to avoid custom's tax.

Would query the amount of research you did before you chucked dollars at the Sandalwood industry in the first place. Tough luck.

Thanks for that! Pretty insulting comment but not unexpected from you, particularly given your likely defensiveness at the exposure of the inaccuracy of your previous post. I bought back in 2011 and held until the bitter end.

Good to see this page has been updated, seemingly in the last day or so: Official AFL Website of the Collingwood Football Club
They've removed the likes of Grundy and Henry, Chugg, McMahon and co., and have e.g. now got Maynard with jumper no. 4. They don't yet have photos of our 3 National Draft recruits (inexplicably, there still isn't one for Carmichael!), but the 4 players we've picked up from other clubs are shown in their new jumpers. Decent effort, overall!

How does Carmy still not have a pic!

Ha! Who is the loser? There was someone who ridiculously called what was an ASX listed company a Ponzi scheme. Someone who did his cabana on it.

If that’s a victory, it was rather pyrrhic.

Gilly is a national treasure.

If I 'ridiculously called it a Ponzi scheme' it was because that is that is how Glaucus that uncovered the rort and many other analysts referred to it. You obviously have not bothered to read any of the resources I listed. Had this been a private thread, I would have listed many many more with numerous more uses of the term Ponzi to describe the company's financial reporting and methods.

You know next to nothing of the details yet pretend that you do. You made an incorrect statement, revealed a total lack of knowledge of the true nature of the company's demise and continue to pretend your initial vague memories were correct. Have I ever claimed I had a 'victory'? Over you, yes, but not in financial terms. My other shares are doing fine, thank you very much.

Gilly may be a national sporting treasure, but he was also the front man in India for a company that was deceiving its investors.

Often wonder for whose benefit posts are removed.
Whilst I didn't do it in this instance, sometimes it's done to nip things in the bud.
Having to have the last word and all that.

The beautiful game strikes again. Just as I got to the stage of being impressed that two worthy sides had managed to navigate their ways through all the fake fouls and roll a dice penalty shootouts, other aspects of the beautiful game hit the headlines in the local league. I listened to a comentator verbal viewers that outrageous crowd behaviour wasnt what soccer was all about. Isnt it? The players generally continue to be as unlikeable as any people involved in sport. Yeh I saw the French guy act like a nice person, but his behaviour is more the exception than the rule. The sportsmanship is almost as bad as some of the local fan behaviour. But it remains a beautiful game. You have to wonder how long people involved in the game can hold back reality. It seems that local fans dont like one of the outcomes of private ownership. I'm not surrprised. Club ownership in soccer is one of the most distasteful things about the beautiful game. I couldnt be bothered enough to try to feel connected to something owned and run by others. But the answer is always to throw things and punch people. And yet it remains the beautiful game. Yeh I know about its popularity. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I dont behold the fantasy.

Spent the morning reading pt 3 of the Adelaide boards covid thread, which still retains its serious quality, along with a range and depth of posters and views, while rambling across a variety of political and health related situations and issues. The discussion, though heated at times, doesn't seem to create spills of the more extreme personalities nor degenerate into mundanity, irrelevance or petty squabbling. B_W would be pleased at the avoidance of dick swinging activities or Tom Sawyer fence painting discussion. All very serious stuff but entertaining.

Mind you, I got Wordle out in two lines yesterday, but never have I worked out how to post the results elsewhere. It's a shame, because my penis could use a good public airing.

It's a dud game, and it reflects well on Australians that soccer will always be a small curiosity in the sporting 'market'.

Still, I can't help but feel sorry for the weirdos who do love the game, that pathetic bundles of s*** manage to hijack and define the competition.

I contrast the forensic analysis of everything that is wrong with AFL to what happens in soccer. We go all out on a guy like Ginnivan for ducking, for playing outside the spirit of the game, and yet the soccer fans and experts express no problems with players who are faking to get free kicks or to get opponents carded.

And another example is that onfield stuff in the last week. The commentator went right into a speech about how that sort of behaviour is totally against soccer's values....and yet it's quite common, for soccer fans to fight and abuse each other...

And the sportsmanship of the players in the world cup.... and the teammanship....or the lack of both. I dont like the players.

And then the fake free kicks, and the reliance on penalty shots....and the shoot-outs at the end of games. I wonder how AFL supporters would react if they picked 5 players from each team to have a kick from 50 and award the premiership that way.

And in all of this, they talk about the beautiful game. I just dont see it. But many find it appealing. I accept that.

You forgot to call out the corruption at the highest levels of this game.
The tournament being played in a country that exploits workers, to the point of death, and executes people who enter same sex relationships should be carved out of the modern world and excluded from hosting any sporting events.
The corruption of the governing body had lead to the biggest sportswashing event the world has ever seen.

well thats true...anything that has that much money in it is going to be corrupt but everyone knew the swiss guy was corrupt...maybe it was expected.

I note the weekend's soccer 'incident' and have to ask, "How are 'fans' allowed to bring flares into these grounds?" It has always perplexed me that flares at a soccer game is almost as ubiquitous as the staging for free kicks!
Bucket man, life ban should do it

Couple of years behind bars too.
If he was definitely the bloke who did it I agree he should get 2 or 3 yrs bird he is fortunate he never blinded that player, I used to go to football in the UK a lot in the early 70,s and there was a lot going on but I never saw a player smacked over the head with a metal bucket.

Mind you I did see a few spectators get smacked with various things.
