I don’t think research is Rusty’s strong suit.
To be fair I’m not sure what is.
Two day benders?

His original tweet was on Friday evening and here we are two days later and old mate Rusty's still windmill punching away.

It's genuine troll behaviour, which is so damned bizarre considering the position he is in. The only other types of people I know who act that way are the ones that have been really ******* hurt or offended by something and lashing out at the negative comments makes them feel much better than calmly responding to the helpful ones ever could. Beginning to think this is just as much about North supporters failing to crucify Clarko as it is about anything Sonja has said or done.
If he was a detective he'd be pulled from he case because he's clearly too close to one side. It's impairing his judgement. Far more than the North supporters he's accusing of bias. His bosses at ABC should be pulling him aside and telling him to post in good faith or stop all together until more is revealed.

Now do you believe me - this is a stitch up - but unfortunately old Rusty failed sewing at school so can’t complete it.
Probably a self taught tailor and all

My take is that he is feeling very sensitive right now - and why wouldn’t he? He’s, probably, read Sonja’s statement without any real knowledge of anything else going on around North right now. With that in mind, I’d say he honestly thought that Sonja’s use of “noise” related to the situation Russell kicked off. His knee-jerk reaction was way over the top. I suspect he realises that himself. Anyway, Sonja is more than capable of standing up for herself. I sometimes think we on BigFooty tend to forget that. Some of our “leap to the defence of a damsel in distress”, while completely understandable, tends to be a little cringeworthy - however well intentioned.

Could also be that great leaders inspire that sort of loyalty.

Sonja would have more information than Jackson would. That will be frustrating for him. She will have read the report, his article been informed from others within the industry, perhaps even directly from the AFL back channels and of course first hand from Clarko, who no doubt has been in close and regular contact with Fagan and Burt.

She would be one for the few people with as much knowledge as anyone. I'll say it again... She knows more than Jackson does. He might be finding that disconcerting. And most importantly Sonja is in a direct position of power over Clarko. This makes her target number 1. It's why he has not gone for anyone else. He probably has zero faith in the AFL investigation (probably fair enough!) and knows it may come down to her informed call. Undermining her will be a predetermined approach to get to Clarko.

By informed call I mean consulting with many others and critically our playing group and within that our indigenous players once the investigation findings are public.

I have faith in Sonja and so do so many others. Her faith in Clarko gives me hope he will coach us successfully. This faith is what Jackson wants to weaken.

I also hope those impacted families get the support and help they need. I hope we're all better for this. And learn. I am.

The bloke needs to log off for a bit. Genuinely.

It's unhealthy to keep arguing on arguably one of the most toxic social media platforms out there (even though Rusty himself has engaged or created most of that in this instance rather disappointingly). People make mistakes and it's extremely difficult for someone so emotionally affected by the sensitivity of information he's received to admit they've made a blue or got something wrong. It is a particularly dangerous situation to be in as the perspective is no longer balanced due to the emotional impact. It takes a really strong character to reflect and take a step back when you've interpreted something the wrong way. I'm not sure Russell will do that as he seems fixated on trying to prove people responding to him are wrong.

The most unusual thing is he is fighting against a club and supporter base that embraced the multicultural aspect of football communities and has a huge community investment led by our president to accomplish accepting different cultures and backgrounds not only in our game but society.

He's literally attacking what he's advocating for. I don't get it lol.

Rusty is a passionate guy who has shared emotional moments with people who blame the football industry for serious hardship in their lives. He knows well the mechanisms of casual, historical and institutionalised racism and the damage they have done over centuries. Maybe he's internalised Clarkson as the undeserved face of an industry that has a history of picking people up, dangling them fame and fortune and dumping them when they're no longer useful.

He knows he has let people down, people who trusted him. He has put their lives in a spotlight they didn't want and aren't prepared for. He probably also knows he went too early - and too personal - in his reporting. That there will never be enough evidence of what he's said, and that any attempt to acquire it will put enormous pressure on those who placed their trust in him, exposing fragile lives to the mercies of social media.

And then he understands that without that evidence there is no 'guilty' verdict for his highest profile targets. He won't be delivering the promised vindication to the 'victims' for sharing their stories, letting them down again. Not least, the whole failed circus will result in crippling damage to his credibility as a journalist.

He may not be at his best.

He's a self proclaimed super hero. I wonder if he changes in a phone box or wears his costume 24/7.

well articulated.

he definitely has gotten caught up in his own storm so much that he cannot see the subject rationally from outside. not a single one of the accusations has been tested so therefore they are just accusations until proven. and given this is a process bought about by several organisations reviewing their own internal processes there will never be a legal outcome form any of the current or so far proposed processes.

its possible that a goodwill payment may be offered if one of the said processes identifies that its appropriate but again there will be no requirement by law.

slander on the other hand carries actual legal consequences.

also he keeps playing the outrage card, but all balanced legal outcomes are designed to isolate the outrage and judge the scenarios on the actions/against precendence. otherwise we may as well just retire the judicial system and reinstate lynch mobs.

I agree.

It's a mess of his own making. The pitfalls of being a self-taught journalist.

100%. This has nothing to do with Sonja being a female, she can fight her own battles but would have appreciated the online support against Rusty. You can't help but be inspired by Sonja's short tenure as President. She's handled the role with aplomb and is the generational leader we've desperately been looking for.

It’s been a baptism of fire and she’s handled it brilliantly.

Amazing how Jackson is selectively picking which comments to engage with on twitter. That tells you all you need to know. It's disingenuous. He could respond to Chadwiko or others that have given well thought out replies but instead he's selecting one's that he can throw the "you only care because you support north" or "i wish you cared this much about those that have lost children".

Those that have been on bigfooty for longer than a month have likely come across those types on this site - especially opposition supporters. At this point in time I'd put him next to Cornes or Carro on the journalist integrity totem pole. Which is unfortunate. If you're covering a topic like this it should be someone that is honest and sincere.
I got blocked because I likened him to Cornes and asked why he had only bothered to respond to those who had agreed with him to that point of which there had been 2 amongst the 100s of Tweets I read. I stood up for Sonja too so that probably didnt help :)

Exactly. All this bullshit about generational talents on the footy field and we haven't acknowledged the one right under our noses.
