I purposely haven’t posted here so far but I’ve been at some local football over the last 2 weekends and ran into 2 guys I know well who are in recruiting in the VFL after previously being in the AFL system. Take this for what it’s worth but this is what they are hearing around the traps -

1. Eagles still very very keen on Curtin at pick 1 - North still well in the frame to get Reid even with pick 2.
2. McKay gone to Sydney for pick 3 compo.
3. North will get Sanders as a pre list.
4. North really keen on Duursma if they get Reid at 2. However may take a tall or wait to the Port pick for a tall. Tall might be Sullivan from the Bushrangers if he’s still available.

That’s all I have for now but will be interesting times especially if we need to trade for guys like Stephens and possibly Melican from Sydney so we don’t dilute the McKay compo pick.
Welcome back I love your work

That article is interesting. I think our best foot forward is not assuming we're getting Sanders because it seems there's still an enormous amount of hurdles to jump, one of them now more obvious being the player having the choice too.

I'm sure we would have discussed this with Colonel. Strikes me as posturing for something.

Well I didn't think about posturing either... regardless we seem to have banked this one without much security to do so.

I remember my eyes bulging with imagined riches last time assistance was on the agenda.

And it's fair enough, too.

I think Sanders' camp is trying to ensure he gets paid like a Pick 5 or Pick 6, and gets the plaudits that come along with that.

“Our biggest concern is how do you acknowledge him in the draft? He has worked all his life to get into the draft. It’s not all about the number you go but it’s an acknowledgment of your efforts. So they might end up (needing to bid on him) like a father-son rather than saying, “Ryley Sanders, North Melbourne” at the end of the draft."

That's a really weird "biggest concern". Getting on to an AFL IS the acknowledgement of your efforts. Draft night just happens and then it's done. Do they think elite players brag about where they were taken in the draft? It's like bragging about your ENTER score (or whatever it's called these day). For us to need to bid on him to satisfy that need.... well i dunno that's just a bit odd to me.

You don’t think hd and Sheezle will be ripping each other about what position they were drafted for the rest of their careers?
I bet the same joke will be going on with Wardlaw and Sheezle, a bit of friendly banter never hurt anyone.

The next will be who gets their first Syd and then it goes to Brownlow etc.

If his biggest concern is how he’s gonna retort to Sheezel’s witty banter for the next decade, the bloke really is living the dream.

It’s a footy club one up man ship, it’s one of the things that players use to drive players.
I’m sure every player on that list will be joking around, you had great season but no rising star winning season etc.

If anything id expect if sheez is gunna open with that then will be on the recieving end of a lot of friendly "they drafted you how high??" whenever a mistake is made. At least id hope sanders would have the bant-awareness to go there.

Could be posturing, could be keeping all the options open until there is something concrete on the table from the AFL and us. His dad can't really say he definitely wants to be at North and no where else at this stage.

But if he isn't sure what he wants to do, we'd obviously need it all completely clear and decided by the time assistance is decided, if that was what our assistance is going to be built around, no point in the AFL handing us access to him and then him turning around and saying no thanks!

Either Sanders Sr is playing some kind 4D chess coordinated with the club, or he's going in an odd direction.

99% of the time the player would love an assured AFL listing. But this time around what, they want to be in the open draft "for the feels"?

The kid is getting drafted no matter what. If he doesn't want to go to north (we're shit) he might fancy gambling on the open draft.

Though I much prefer the idea that it's part of a plan to get the league to allow clubs to bid on him and the league give us enough in extra pick(s) to pay for it (and then some).

Without any background machinations it's a strange message though. He lives in Melbourne and would be drafted to a Melbourne club he has a relationship with.

Haven't seen this messaging elsewhere unless a player genuinely didn't want to go there. Which I don't think is the case here, which makes it even more confusing.

Will just tick the "4D Chess" option.

From a parents perspective it's totally understandable to want your son to be acknowledged at an event like his peers. It's a big deal getting drafted.

I get that, and the number called, up on stage with the guernsey and all that. But for it to be a factor in stopping him from being just gauranteed a spot on a list, to know the destination ahead of time, all those things, still seems a weird sticking point let alone the most important sticking point.

Feels to me like a slight re-framing that Ryley is a legitimate top 10 pick, which the family obviously feel is being diluted with this pre-list conversation, and that he's also in charge of his future to some degree.

My brain went wondering, is this posible? does he have any connection to the club or coaches?
Why would he come out now with that article.
From previous experience I can’t imagine anyone at the club being smart enough to play games like this but in saying that this is right up Clarkson ally, straight after we’ve had discussions with the afl, there’s an article out saying, well maybe the assistance on offer isn’t there anyway. Go back and think harder before you throw all the eggs in the Sanders assistance.
