yeh before kako bid Essendon can either trade 28 + 31 out for future second rounders and points this years draft.
of package up with a future first to move up the board before a kako bid.

How high does Dees F1 + 28 get you Saints pick 8?
Im thinking more likely around pick 13, which is similar to where Kako bid might fall.

Another option is a trade to gold coast for future picks so they can get back into the draft with 28 + 31 post bid on their academy kid.
Dees F1 and 28 probably doesn’t get you in until at least what is currently 15.

The level of uncertainty around where Melbourne could finish next year won’t help. They finished 5th bottom this year, but with 11 wins and a percentage of 98.5- with everything going wrong- so they could rise up the ladder a lot next year without much difficulty.

The difference between 5th bottom and 5th was only 4 more wins.

To be a chance for pick 8, you’d have to offer either both F1’s, or your F1 and a lot of change.

Why would we take less in a trade for pick 8 compared to what you got for pick 9?

We won’t trade out of this draft either. We want first rounders in this draft.

The only apparent option is the giants.

I think you'd need to offer all of F1, 28 & 31 for pick 8. Or throw in another F1 and offer us F1, F1, 28 & 31 for 2, 62, F2 and see what happens.

If they offered us a bounty for 8 (which they could afford to do, given how much they got for 9 and how cheaply they’ll get Kako- even more so if we’re out of the bidding picture) we could also then look to trade back in.

We’d have 2 or even 3 F1’s to offer, or potentially 2 F1’s and then up to 3 picks in the 28-32 range.

We’d easily have enough to offer GWS for say 15 and 21. Or any two of their 3 picks in that range.

8 feels to me like a pick we just need to get maximum value for. Then make it work for us from there.

What essendon and all clubs in this circumstance do is trade down before the draft with a club below them, then live trade on the night .
Before draft, essendon trade say 9 for 24,f2 with Richmond.
Then after pick 9 is taken, Richmond trade 10 to essendon for essendons F2,F3.

North wouldn't do that, they want Tauru and they want to start improving next year, not wait another year.
I don't think Essendon do that either.
I think GWS or Richmond will be Essendons best chances to get back into the draft.

If North had the F1’s of themselves, Essendon and Melbourne, plus 28 and 31, they could trade back in just about anywhere they like, to get Tauru. Especially if he made it to 7, which would be pretty likely.

I think we’d gladly do that trade and then look to trade back in from 15 onwards.

I wonder how much they’d be willing to offer us for 8.

If they got it it would obviously prevent us from bidding on him there, and it would also get them in ahead of Melbourne, if they happen to be keen on Armstrong for instance, and think they’ll take him, if available.
Potential to trade: F1 (Melb+Ess both rated similarly) and 28,31 and F2 (or whatever they can get for that last bundle)

I think the Essendon F1 is worth a fair bit more than the Dees one. Given Essendon seem to have gone with a bit of reset, it wouldn’t shock me at all if they finished bottom 4 or 5 next year (remembering that 5th bottom this year had 11 wins and a % of 98), whereas with Petracca presumably back, Dees could bounce back into the 8.

So are you saying F1, 28 and 31 for 8 and F2?

I doubt we’d do that, if so. We’re likely going to get good picks in this years draft being offered to us for 8, so to risk trading in a future pick or picks instead, it would need to be a real bounty of a deal.

I think that some list managers like the spotlight, don't just do the norm or obvious thing.
I am not saying that is SOS, but what do St Kilda do Re 8. Do they want to trade it, or only for overs with a 2024 emphasis.
E.g if GWS said no to 8 for 15,16,

But said 8, F3 for 16, 37,F1 as a trade offer, does StKilda accept? I assume not.

I'd have them on the same line, but fair enough to rate Essendon lower.

I'm saying if they want in enough, they'll offer F1, F2, 28, 31 for 8.

But it might not end up being 28 and 31 as they may trade them out early and offer the proceeds.

Ah OK, well if they offered all that I think we’d have to take it. We’d probably throw in 47 and maybe more to help get that done.

Then we’d offer one or both F1’s and as many as all 3 of the picks in the 28-32 range to get back into the first round this year.

Crows interviewed Lalor again today.

Have a feeling if they swap with North he’s their target (if he doesn’t go #1).

Just wonder whether Richmond take Draper feel he is the most underrated of these top 4

I can't fathom how StKilda would contemplate moving back from the 7,8 combo. Surely getting elite talent is their No.1, 2,3 and infinity gameplans.

Trade up, sure. That 7&F1 for 2 deal should absolutely be contemplated. But trading back should be nowhere near discussion level imo.

Option 1: Trade up. Great result.
Option 2: 7&8. Great result.
Option 3: No option 3.

No way Laor makes it to Pick 4 for the Crows, so the Crows must be having strong ambitions of trying to land Pick 2.

Mind you could also be just due diligence in interviewing the top rated mids in this draft.

Definitely, those with narcissistic personalities will always be looking for “look at me, look how great I am” time.

I think due to the fact all the prime midfield options are likely to be off the table by 8 in particular, we may just be looking to maximise value with 8.

I think there’s so little between the group that are going to go between 8 and say 16 that we’d rather have two bites at that cherry, rather than one.

But said 8, F3 for 16, 37,F1 as a trade offer, does StKilda accept? I assume not.
Probably not. I don’t think GWS’s future first would hold much appeal and 37 is probably too close to where Cole will be bid on.

Im not 100% convinced the Dee's will overlook Tauru at their Pick 5.

North are 99% certainties of landing Tauru either with their Pick 2 or trading with the Crows for Pick 4.

What would a trade for 2,4 be?
2 for 4,2F3's. I doubt North does that, at least not their bigfooty posters.
But perhaps if they do, trading 4 becomes an option.
4 for 10,18 as an example.

Exactly. Clubs do their research early in case that player could be a trade target down the track

It is, especially in the midfield (although something would have to go seriously wrong for Pou to not be the guy you build a midfield around), but this draft has never been known for its elite pointy end.

It’s always been better known for its depth of talent, and at pick 8, the consensus “top 6 mids” will all likely be gone, and possibly Tauru as well, so then, who’s next?

I reckon you could throw a blanket over a big handful of them, so we may prefer to grab two of them, if we can, rather than just 1.

There’s probably nothing between

Travaglia and Allan
Reid and Lindsay
Armstrong and Shanahan and J Whit
Hotton and Berry
Tauru and Trainor

And none are necessarily the “pure bankable mids” we ideally want.

So we’d prefer to grab two of them, rather than just 1. And look to fill two positional needs with high quality talent, rather than 1.

Insanity imo.

This is not a cheapshot, but StKilda repeatedly have trouble attracting elite players. Like all teams, they have plenty of high level and next level talent always rolling through.

But to throw a towel over everyone between 7 & 20 is madness. Anyone can take the job and read out a name if that's the case. Saints have got 2 great picks and always need to take the chance to have the best shot at their next elite player.

They should absolutely read out the 2 highest players on their rankings at 7 & 8.

Or trade up if they can.

I agree that theyt should be aiming for an elite player, but if they think they're more likely to get an elite player with two picks in the teens than one pick at 8 they should try to trade it out.

What if they have 8 equally rated players available at pick 8?

Aussierules has laid out the names. If you can split them and tell me which is the elite talent and which ones aren’t then good luck to you.

To me this draft has Ashcroft and a top 7 (6 mids and Tauru).

After that there’s a dozen or so you can throw a blanket over. All have upside to be really good players but none are a must have.

Take the mids: Hotton, acl, small sample size as a ball winner. Reid - size, speed. Travaglia - speed, kicking. Allan - decision making. Lindsay - contested ball. Berry - size, ball winning.

And the same goes for the talls.
