Society/Culture Drag Queen Story Time Cancellations

I thought this deserved a thread of its own instead of being lumped into other threads. I’m very dismayed recently at the cancellation of various drag queen story time events or them moved online to ensure safety of staff, parents and kids:

These events are being cancelled due threats and abuse received from far right protesters, the same anti vaccination groups, closely aligned with the neo Nazis and some religious fundamentalists.

I thought in Australia if a group was going around violently threatening a kid’s event 99% of society would want the government and police to crack down on that group and to ensure the kid’s can safely attend that event. However we seem to be kowtowing to the protesters and not doing anything to ensure these legal events can go ahead safely?

Even if you personally would not attend a drag queen event every parent has the right to decide whether or not they should attend such an event, and not have themselves or their children face harassment.
Can I just ask - why are there no Drag Kings ?

Do they feel the same need to engage with young children ?
It would depend on the person. People like the Wiggles, they have an affinity for working with kids that not everybody has. It takes a special kind of patience to work at a child's level for an extended amount of time.

I don't have kids of my own but I've watched my friends' kids grow up from babies and being around herds of children from 3 - 8 is exhausting. They've got energy to burn and even just watching them running round like little lunatics leaves me drained let alone being roped into their play.

Some adults haven't had the bad luck of that spark being snuffed out by the real-world pressures of living yet. Such people don't grow on trees, so once they clear a police check I say we're lucky to have them at all.

Come on man, it's not like they are catholics or anything like that.
I see your fall back position is religion.
Let’s leave that out of this argument as that is a topic for another day.
Talking about direct interaction with young children and the portrayal of women by them. Ie big hair big boobs outlandish make up

And whoever brought the Wiggles and Emma Wiggle into the argument is also muddying the waters.

They're not as prominent but they do exist.

“Traditionally, drag queens are seen as parodying the characteristics associated with women. We immediately think of drag queens with big hair and overdone make-up, and body language that conforms to stereotypical “female” behaviour “

Perpetuating an old stereotype seems odd if these people see themselves as progressives

It’s a good comparison to make with religion because we never see or hear of drag queens sexually assaulting children, while every second day we hear about religious folk getting caught doing just that.

Yet it seems to be mostly religious people that are performing against drag queens.

Why do you think that is?

I said religion has nothing to do with this topic.
Although I do wonder at the way some of the left choose to select religious schools for their children’s education.

What would you choose ? Saint Peter’s College or a school run by Drag Queens? Anyway , I digress.

The issue was raised regarding portraying outdated and demeaning stereotypes of women. Do you have an opinion on that or is that too hard?

In case you haven't noticed, some women do have big hair and big boobs. Not all drag queens do, so it sounds like you are stereotyping.

A school run by drag queens would probably be safer for kids than a school run by a church, if history is anything to go by.

Could you outline which specific part of a drag queen's performance you feel is outdated or demeaning of women? Then, could you provide examples of those specific steriotypes occurring during drag queen story hour?

What specifically about these images is demeaning towards women, or propagates derogatory steriotypes?

If there's a problem, surely you can express what it is.

They were beards from time

Mmmmm
They sound confused
Many drag queens would have gone to elite colleges, just like yours.

You can't rule it out.
That has nothing to do with my argument

Again - for the intellectually bereft - would you send your children to an elite school that was religion based or a school run by drag queens ?

I sent my child to the local state school. If there was dress up storytime in the library there, I would much rather it be a drag queen, as opposed to clergy.
