Drum to Hawthorn?

You would have to lose something though.....
Oh granted. I don't doubt that for a second. But I can't see Geelong sending a player like Djerrkura PLUS a 3rd Round pick Freo's way for Drum.

Not ruling it out, stranger things have happened. But in my opinion, I can't see it.

Can seeing Gamble sent packing, but whether or not the Cats & Freo rate him equal to Drum, I couldn't tell you. Doubtful, in my opinion.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is Drum's contract situation. It was written in the West yesterday that he is considering nominating for the draft. I don't understand the rules about player trades well enough but if he does this don't we get zip? Can he do this?I don't think he feels like he owes us anything.

Drum is out of contract as of October 31 so if we can't do a deal next week he could nominate for the National and/or PS drafts. I'd be surprised if some sort of trade wasn't done but, on his own, Drum would probably only get a 30+ pick.

Drum's well within his rights under the AFL's current rules to do it. This is probably the easiest way for him to get where he wants.

It certainly lowers his trade value amongst the lower ranked teams who would be able to secure him in the National Draft without much risk. However, the reality is, with all the other names being thrown up for trade at the moment, Drum's value was already pretty low.

It's a pretty bad system all around I reckon. The player tells his agent he wants to be traded to a certain club, the agent goes to the club, media and anyone else who will listen and throws in the 'if a trade can't be arranged my client is happy to take his chances in the draft' line. They need to resolve it before free agency comes in.

From the NBA-
http://www.nba.com/2009/news/09/15/jackson.fine/index.html
Golden State's Stephen Jackson was fined $25,000 by the NBA on Tuesday for saying he wanted to be traded.

Not that I want it to happen, but I would be quite curious to see where he is picked if he did enter the national draft.

It seems quite obvious that he was fed up with his time at Freo throughout the year (even going back several years), and I doubt he is too concerned about trying to get us anything in a trade.

I did a random search and found this article which I hadn't seen before:

http://www.countryfootyscores.com/m...ol/2993-three-years-on-still-a-way-to-go.html

"I started wondering if it was all worth it. I battled homesickness and it certainly took a toll. I was thinking 'what I am I doing all this way over the other side of the country?'

"My form probably hasn't warranted a game but I don't think I should have been dropped in the first place," he said. "I find it hard to get myself up to play in the WAFL. People don't realise that you only go to the last team meeting of the week at your WAFL club, then you play on the Saturday. Sometimes it's just not enjoyable."

It's not about owing us something but Drum would want to be traded to avoid spending a couple of months unemployed.

He can either find a new home next week or wait for the drafts in late November/early December. He won't want that uncertainty so if a deal is offered by a club that Drum wants to play for he'll be traded.

I don't see the problem. The only players willing to enter the draft will be mediocre players like Drum, Bradley and Leigh Brown who don't garner much interest.

If Drum enters the National Draft and a club is really keen to get him they'll have to use their 3rd round pick so they might aswell trade their 3rd rounder to us and have Drum at the club for the start of the pre-season??

Bradley entered the draft because we weren't willing to trade for him. There was no point, Essendon wasn't going to re-sign him and nobody else seemed interested.

That's what's wrong with the system when players go public. The player loses out because he's in limbo for a month and the current club loses out on their investment. Only the new club benefits, and possibly the player's manager - assuming their client does actually get picked up in the draft, not that it matters, they have other clients anyway...

Why give an opposition team an extra draft pick if it's not necessary? Better off keeping it in case one of your draft prospects slides than giving it to someone else. Like you say, they're only a mediocre player anyway it's pretty low risk stuff. If we get him, we get him, if we don't, oh well.

I like to see the following trade done:

Drum to Geelong, Stokes to WCE, Wilson to Freo. Picks will be needed.

Geelong get
Drum
Pick 39 from WCE

WCE get
Stokes

Freo get
Wilson
Pick 49 from Geelong

Tarrant + Peake > St.Kilda

Pick #15 > Freo

---------------------------------------

Drum + 3rd Rnd Pick #36 > Hawthorn

2nd Rnd Pick #26 > Fremantle

---------------------------------------------------

Freo Get - Picks #15, 26

Hawthorn get - Drum + Pick 36

Saints get - Tarrant + Peake

We lose an extra player but that just free's up an extra spot on our list for a rookie upgrade.

I tried to make that fair but what do you think?

Would be happy with both of those outcomes but I'd say the Tarrant one is improbable and the Drum one highly unlikely.

I doubt anyone would trump them if the Hawks offered pick 42 for Drum so why offer pick 26??

I would definitely be happy with that, and it's not beyond the realms of possibility either. Having 4 picks in the top 26 would allow us to take a good mix of quality talls and mids. The only issue I can see is the Hawthorn part of the trade, they won't have anything left to trade us if they also trade in Gibson and Burgoyne.

It's a nice deal for Fremantle but I think you're overrating Drum's value.

Plus, Hawthorn already have pick #57, moving up 5 spots won't make much difference by that stage of the draft. They're essentially giving up a second rounder just for Drum which is over the odds IMO.

Changed it to our 3rd rounder.

So basically we swapping our 3rd round for their second and throwing Drum in on top.

It's probably closer to the mark, not sure Hawthorn will actually have a 2nd round pick to give us though if the Gibson trade is done.

I know Drum seems to have cracked the absolute sads with Fremantle, but what club will he get a better opportunity at over the next few years?

What if we give them Drum + 3rd round pick 36?

Still gives us picks 4, 20, 26 and if the Tarrant one happened 4, 15, 20, 26.

yep would be happy with this.

im a little disgruntled with trade week. when you consider all of the players having asked for trades, on top of the "big names" i just cant see us getting any deals done..... i love taz but for the clubs development and future... geez i hope we can get something reasonable for him and trade him off

Very interesting article. it's a tough caper for these kids if they hit a few roadblocks, but having said that, it's a tough caper if you make it so having a hard process helps sort out those that have the mental fortitude to survive.
