Hawthorn fans: are you guys confident that you'll be able to get both Wingard and Shiel, or is it more likely to be one or the other?

I'm not confident that we'll get either but we appear to be having a decent crack at both. Realistically I'd say we only get one but who knows.
My preference would be for Wingard but I seem to be in the minority. From what I've seen of Shiel (which granted isn't a great deal) he's being over rated and over valued on BigFooty and in the media...props to his manager I suppose.

Have to think both is unlikely. Did get Mitchell and O'Meara in the one trade period though so who knows? Obviously be disappointed if we get neither but I do not want us to grossly overpay just to get a trade done.

Hawthorn's history suggests we will not 'overpay' in terms of salary (players must fit into club pay arrangements) but once a commitment is made to a player, we will 'overpay' in terms of trade to get it done - within reason (which the O'Meara trade very nearly stretched to breaking point, hence why it dragged out so long). Hawks generally offer up fair deals and get them done though.

If he does leave gws I’m confident he will come to us, but not ruling out him staying. Wingard no confidence at all. Don’t think he ever wanted to leave. Everything dating back to him getting drafted was that he never wanted to leave Adelaide. Probably just trying to up his next contract.

Because selling the farm for O'Meara & Mitchell was a complete bust.....And we have zero youf as a direct result; as winning the VFL flag proves.

Draft places are so over-rated....We just de-listed a number 2 selection who couldn't live up to the billing.

Like we did 2 years ago yeah? And got a Brownlow medalist for pick 14. Lulz.

Because Hawthorn!

Sounds like he stays or the Hawks.

If he moves, best fit would be the Hawks at this time.

Not sure why Blues fans are so keen on him, a big name signing is nice, I get that, but he is going to be
circa 29 in the blink of an eye, 3 years goes fast.

Focus should be on getting 50 games into our young kids, would prefer setterfield, Walsh and the Gov personally.

Goodluck Hawks.

Not my team so I'm happy to be corrected but I reckon the Blues need some star power to help Cripps out. Walsh could be that but Setterfield and Guv are role players (albeit choc full of potential). Easier said than done though I suppose.

The fact of the matter right now is they are not in a great place and therefore getting the star power this year is tough. I think the best thing for Carlton is to go hard at the draft, win a few more games next year, get some real young spirit in the club (a la Brisbane) and attack 2019 trade period hard when the clubis a much more appetising proposition..

Essendon spurned in favour of Carlton.

Ouch!
Lol I’d like to agree with you, but think it’s more to do with Carlton haven’t met with him yet. Think the meeting is tomorrow. But gonna take a hell of a lot from them cause he’s pretty keen on us. Just gotta hope gws want to play ball

If it was about that success he’d stay at the Giants.
Ahh yes the fall back for Carlton fans. Hawthorn are heading south they no youth as each year passes and we get more and more players into the club. It doesn't take much to contend these days there are no stand out sides in the AFL. Time enough for one more Bradbury from Hawthorn

Of course they can get both. If they both tell their clubs they want to go to Hawthorn, there’ll be a lot of hand wringing and a billion words written, and then they’ll be traded to Hawthorn. It’s the way it works.

If they get both players on board, trades will be worked out.

We could most certainly do it if they nominate, you're right. Just from an Essendon fan I'm not sure whether you're being sarcastic.

It'll entirely ruin our next two years of drafting if we do get them though.

I dont think its an uncommon opinion to say GWS are better placed to win a flag even if you did land Shiel.

I wonder what Hawthorn would have to pay for him. I mean you would think their first rounder for 2018 and 2019 would be a starting point, but even then it feels like unders, considering what Collingwood paid for Treloar anyway.
Treloar was three years younger tbf.

Treloar is a better player than Shiel for starters and pound for pound Shiel is worth slightly less on the trade table then what Treloar was worth when he nominated Collingwood a few years ago.

Treloar was a more highly rated prospect and was younger at his time of being traded.

- 3 years younger
- Runner up in B&F the year he was traded.
- Not about to become an RFA the next year.

Those are 3 pretty significant differences, even without getting into arguments about who is better (probably Treloar because he gets his hands on the ball more, but Shiel might do that when not playing in GWS's fully stacked midfield too, and their usage stats when they both have the ball in hand are pretty similar).

Probably fair enough, but spirit at the club is incredibly high in the circumstances. Even as we wound out the year with some tired flogging the player spirits were high. We haven't lost any players this year or last (aside from Gibbs which was a fairly unique case), and almost every key young player signed an extension this year.

But otherwise, I suspect you are right and we just need to wait it out. A couple more drafts and the talent base is there, then a year or two to develop.

Hawks should get Shiel and Wingard from here, even if the cost is picks 1-3 this year and next years first. I guess you have picked your road and we picked ours - both teams best advised to stick the course
