Because he is contracted to you can't just trade him to someone against his will, if you try and do that he can just wait 12 months and sign at a club of his choice as a free agent.
Ummm
We dont have to trade him at all. He's a contracted player and cant simply move to the club of his choice.

He's a restricted free agent then. That was always the case and a conversation for next year.

It's a changing market now, whereby clubs are looking to maximise their return a year earlier, where they have greater power to negotiate for a better outcome & return on investment for themselves.

You've been provided with numerous examples regarding this exact scenario & practise of late, & yet you still continue to bury your head in the sand over it.

While I agree with you, gws don't need to maximise their potential.

If I was gws, I would hold onto Shiel and hope they win a comp with him.

As a hawks fan, you would know better than giving up on the present.

If one is to believe the rumours, they are under tremendous cap-pressure for 2019.....And shiel is on very big coin.

Jettisoning him early would mean not having to give up another 2 wanted players, & allow them to also pick up an extra first rounder.....And if he's going in 2019 anyways, then that means losing 3 players & having no first rounder this year in a draft far deeper than the next.

It's not just for our benefit.....That would be silly.

The only part of your post that makes sense is the possible 1st rounder for this year. And Shiel is better than a 1st rounder for the next 12 months.

Otherwise they have no reason to trade him.

Hopeful much???

Not sure why you guys getting worked up mate?? The two clubs have already met and flushed out potentially doing a trade/picks, so, if it suits gws then it’s ON! Out of everybody else’s control.
The scuttlebutt is getting louder as journos have been sounding out Hawks/Shiel connection more and more but the hawks DO have a fair few irons in the fire so we gotta sit back and just wait which way it’s gonna land. Trust me, no ones gonna get dudded.

Why do you imagine I'm worked up?

Nah, it all makes sense mate....I've provided plenty of reasons for why it makes sense for them to trade him now.

Your post actually contains nothing of substance.

Please define what you think very big coin is?

I'm not arguing whether or not other players have had better careers to date, because McClug and Taranto probably have, but the way "potential" and "future development" is far more dependent on height than it should be. McGrath is an excellent player and person, there's no reason that people should view him as becoming stagnant in his development while expecting others to find another gear, but they do. Hence the talk "he's been good now, but in a few years...". That talk doesn't happen with tall players.

And no, I'm not being sensitive. I'm making a point that people are subconsciously biased towards bigger players because size has inherent advantages.
So how in the **** have mccluggage and Taranto had better careers to date? Genuinely curious because McGrath followed up winning the RS with a really solid year
