Test (Early) Sri Lanka tour squad predictions

Have said on BF before,Maxwell is the biggest waste of talent for test cricket I have seen for a long time.Never given the opportunity to play red ball cricket and is judged on what he does in white ball cricket. In white ball cricket he bats to low and is expected to bat in the last few overs and play the big risky shots.BUT I agree with you,to old to bring into the test side now and time to blood younger cricketers on the test scene.Hopefully will be playing shield cricket for Victoria in the latter part of the shield season.
I agree Voice his ship has sailed in the test arena and it's sad for Aussie cricket IMO and when you look back on his career when he retires....it will be what if ??

I don't agree with your 2nd point though Voice ....never given the opportunity to play red ball cricket ......he is mid 30s he has had opportunity throughout the years to play shield cricket and excel ...this summer wasn't even picked for Vic when available playing 2nd eleven instead

If he had played at least 2/3 shield games a season and done well then I could see your argument but in reality he hasn't

I thought Maxwell was hard done by when he came out of the 2017 Bangladesh series as incumbent at six having performed serviceably on tour and was dropped for Shaun Marsh for the Ashes but his ship has well and truly sailed now.
Maxwell never given the chance to play test cricket in Australia after that,a disgrace.

Then bat Lab there or McSweeney, Lab is in putrid form anyway. It's not really changing the order much everyone just shifts down one. Smith batted 5 a bit anyway
You know "everyone shifts down one" isn't straight forward at this level...One of Khawaja/Konstas wont play if Head opens

Australia squad for Sri Lanka Tests: Steve Smith (c), Sean Abbott, Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cooper Connolly, Travis Head (vc), Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Sam Konstas, Matt Kuhnemann, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Nathan McSweeney, Todd Murphy, Mitchell Starc, Beau Webster

Baffled by some selections, but not the Sween who was cruelly dropped. Has Bailey been shamed into his back flip? Sixteen players for two Tests and how many white ballers. CA has lost the plot!!
what selections BGman ?

What the hell did Handscomb do to get drafted into the extended squad, then get the the chop behind Abbott?

Made starts in 4 of the 6 innings in India (which is better than most the other Aussie batsmen) and had a 72n.o. too..

Unless they plan to play McSweeney (at the expense of either Marnus or Khwaja - both of which I'd be happy with), then why take him?

So confused by this squad - is it "horses for courses" on a spinning dust bowl (seems acceptable for the bowling unit, so why not the batting), or is it a future "blooding" experience for youngsters now the WTC is gauranteed, or is it just jobs for mates from a particular State and allowing out of form old boys "find some form" (good luck on these wickets!!)

Then don't open Head I'm more than fine with that as well. Head will have to bowl heaps anyway so keeping him at 5 is perfectly ok

Don't agree, Bartlett playing Shield is so important long term. All 3 of Spencer, X, and Jhye need to play the entire Shield season. Lets see if all 3 can be relied on to last back to back games, all 3 have that small query

Don't disagree with this viewpoint either.

I'm very impressed with the bowler that Bartlett is turning into.

Handscomb averages a whopping 32 in the sub continent can we not make him out like he is Steve Smith over there! Great he made starts, didn't go on with it, and is old and past it. Abbott and him aren't even the same pick- Abbott is there for a Bowling AR spot

I don't agree with the selection but they see Abbott all rounder ability and his use of the white floppy as enticing factors for the squad

Don't disagree he needs to show he can last a season though. Big talent.

To be fair mixes a great Gatorade

How do you know he won't open?

Dropping a kid loaded with potential after 2 tests is just stupid.

define potential ? it's not like footy when getting games into you improves you this is test cricket on a pitch NZ failed on. he'll learn way more playing out at state level imo than a turning mine field. He got to a striaght dart at the MCG

When's Cameron Green coming back from his injury anyone know?

Love to know when Maxwell had the opportunity to play shield cricket for Victoria. The games clashed with Australian white ball games.Remember when there was a Australia A team in England a couple of years ago and to help with the selection for the upcoming ashes series the AustA team played against the Australian team.About 24 players selected between the 2 teams and Maxwell not amongst the list.He was there and some said not selected because of a couple of reckless shots in white ball cricket the week before in the World Cup.

There's my 12. Last spot is the XI between Murphy and Boland depending on conditions. Webster bowling both pace and spin gives us flexibility. If we go 3 spinners, he can bowl pace, if we go two pacemen he can bowl spin.

Konstas
Head
Marnus
Smith
McSweeney
Webster
Carey
Starc
Murphy
Lyon
Kuhnemann
Boland
