Maybe it's to do with past wars, but I always wonder why it's not more on the map as a tourist destination - stunningly beautiful island with something for everyone from the surf to the safaris to the hills and tea estates to the ancient cultural places.
The more accessible options (Bali, Singapore, Thailand, etc) makes it difficult to justify going there for many, particularly families. It’s not really somewhere you “pass through” either. The old marketing on Channel 9, even led by Tony who loved the place was just a few plane shots. SL tourism could do a lot worse than tap into the Australian market using cricket as a vehicle. I’d be more than happy for the government and even Fox to subsidise some of the advertising cost, just an incredible place. If there was some resultant demand for it I’ve always thought a flight Perth to Colombo then onto Maldives would be commercially viable.

Good point. I was living in South East Asia when I went on a few family holidays there. So flight was short and cheap.

Absolutely one of my favourite countries. People are friendly, dirt cheap safari, landscape and food are incredible. One of the best sporting experiences I’ve had.
I might have to go check it out on a future tour. My wife refuses to go back to India, but I can probably sell her on beaches, seafood and more safaris.

Last time I went I took the missus and went to India and Sri Lanka. She felt far more comfortable in SL. Minimal ogling and hassling and when you politely say no to the relatively few hawkers there are they leave you alone. If you do end up heading there feel free to hit me and/or sr36 up, I’m sure we’d both be happy to give some suggestions that would make it more appealing for the missus/family.

Surgery on the shoulder that popped when he hi fived would you believe. That was about a month ago me thinks. So there goes any chance of a comeback this year in any format. Perhaps be back in time for WTC final but will he even be selected for that?
Ashes next year is absolute best case scenario

I would imagine it's simple enough to buy them at the ground.

It's what I'm going to do. Apparently, you can also get access to the "Members" for a nominal fee.

First game starts on a Wednesday so I can't see it jam packed for the first 3 days anyway. Second Test starts on a Thursday.
I'm booked and off to the first test! Liking the sound of the members option, also looking forward to watching a session up from the fort too.

My wife and I had Sri Lanka on the travel bucket list as one of our next destinations, but the children and Covid came along.

It's nice to hear then positive reports.
I've recently met two Sri Lankan men (separately) who are great people, and both are glowing with national pride despite also acknowledging the frosty political history.

I’ve got friends that have a surfing retreat on the south coast, it looks amazing and they certainly live the life. I’ll get there one day.

So am guessing beer is available at the cricket in Sri Lanka? (unlike India, and Australia*)

*i don't count midstrength as beer
I actually don't know. But I certainly hope so. That's the GCC bar though

And if you're drinking mid-strength beer at the Cricket you're in the wrong stand or at the wrong ground.

It was in Kandy in 2019 - the cheapest beer I've drunk in Sri Lanka surprisingly.

Sri Lanka has a dry day about once a month when it's illegal to sell alcohol, so if you're unlucky you might get a day without beer being sold. And I wouldn't be surprised if there are dry stands, so worth looking into.

* If any of the one dayers are in Dambulla, they don't sell beer there, as it's in a no alcohol zone.

I know Galle is predominantly Muslim so wasn't sure, but sounds like there are plenty of bars, so am sure pissheads like myself will be catered for.
