From where i was sitting i have no idea how it could of possibly been out of bounds like people are claiming.

There were 2 giants players right there. Neither claimed out of bounds. This thread is full of weirdos who dont seem to enjoy the spectacle of footy or appreciate skill.

It looked to be out of bounds when he switched the ball to his left hand but it wasn't called and the goal stands. The guy is a freak!

Might be biased, but still rate Hawkins' effort as more GOTY worthy.

I wouldn't be upset if that won GOTY over the Betts goal. Both deserving for different reason.

Loved Eddie's goal but even as a card-carrying Geelong hater, I thought Hawkins' goal was better. Lumbering bison kicks a bouncing ball off the deck, from well outside 50... come off it, what a goal! It's just a shame he wasn't in front of a full G, the reaction would've been awesome.

I cannot understand why anyone would put a kick off the ground from 50m as a goal of the year? I wouldn't have that in my top 50 for the year.

Really? List all the other times and the players that you've seen do it? It was a complete fluke, funny shaped ball bobbling around lose and he just flushed it. I've never seen one like it in our game from over 40 years of watching it.

I do like Eddie's better though. It was deliberate and could be replicated by himself or someone else. I don't think I'll see another like Hawkin's goal.

That's my point, when else does anyone score that way? I've never seen it done, been watching ~35 years. Eddie was great but it's no more exciting or interesting to me than eg Langford's bizarre tumbler in the '14 GF, or Westfoff's falling-away-checkside against Geelong.

I'm not knocking how good Eddie's effort was, even though I can see it's riled up the Crow fanboys that not everyone is fapping quite enough for their liking.

Best so far for mine. To stay in the contest, keep the ball alive and then execute the kick around the corner perfectly while off balanced and under pressure - there was a fair bit going on there for that goal to come together.

Why shouldn't a fluke goal be goal of the year? It doesn't say in the rules it can't be. The award should be awarded to the most unbelievable or amazing goal imo.
The Hawkins goal was as miraculous as the betts goal.

Yeah agreed. Flukes are fun but IMO goal of the year should reward genuine skill and ingenuity.

It wasn't a fluke. He intended every bit of it. That is what made it amazing.

Personally, I like his goal last night ... but I wouldn't put it in the class of his goal last year. My main point of difference here is that someone put up the Hawkins off the ground goal as goty leader - I disagree with that completely.
