It was the stereotypical 2017 Port loss. It had everything that we've come to expect unfortunately.

I feel that selection cost us. Trengove HAD to play. No ifs, no buts. But, as i've been saying all year, we've ignored the core issue as to why we've struggled all year and that is our midfield. What the **** was Ebert doing in the first half? He turned it over every time he got it. Wines was nowhere at half time. Ryder looked spooked. When the heat was in the game early, our midfield absolutely melted under the pressure for about the 8th time this year. These guys need to take a hard look at themselves.

Our total lack of composure when it matters is an indictment on the entire club. For years we've been saying this. Years. Wingard decides to double up on his Richmond antics by burning his teammates twice in the last minute. Cost us the game. S Gray played alright for 2 1/2 quarters. Then his decision through the last quarter and extra time to try and take a hanger every time the ball went near him was ****ing laughable. Keep your ****ing feet. Impey...not mentally ready to play in a final. It's an indictment that the players that showed the most composure last night were kids who've played bugger all football. Bonner was excellent. Houston was excellent. Howard was excellent. They should not be leading the way.

Great summary - we needed Trengove + next year we need another high quality midfielder. Ebert, Wines, SPP are great grunt players but we need one class ball winner.

Top of the Riverbank had some spare seats but not 10k worth. To me it looked like 45k and sounded like 65k.

41k looked right to me. You could have easily fit another 3k just in the riverbank stand alone. Then there was the western stands which had numerous blocks of 5-6-7 rows with noone in them. I assume it was the same for the eastern stands. There were spare seats everywhere.

Do we think the midfield struggles are due to lack of composure or is there a structural/tactical thing going on there? The way Ebert, Wines, and SPP throw themselves into the contest time after time tells me they are up for the battle, so surely its a tactical thing?

We are in the minority on here, most posters are happy for him to walk and don't see him anywhere near our best 22 anymore. Ridiculous.

I don't know about that. I think a lot of posters accept that he's gone and understand why he would leave. But happy about it, no.

Breaks my heart to see a great clubman who does everything asked of him basically pushed out the door because he's been played out of position doing what the coaches want and lost his best spot.

Should have played last night.

I am not gonna lay the blame on anyone, even Robbie did something stupid when he had time and space with the ball and decided to run with it into congestion.

Once again we kicked more behinds than goals. Yet when all we needed was a behind in the last two mins of reg time when we had the ball locked in our forward area, we couldn't ****ing get one. WTF was that? How many times can you look like scoring a behind to win a game and not actually score anything? I'm ****ing pissed. Our skill level last night by foot was atrocious. I get finals pressure can do that but we had no clear heads. Did we oversleep the alarm? We were sleeping when the game started. Handpassing to team mates who were themselves gonna be put under the pump, just poor decision making and poor skills for most of the night.

Sick of losing tight games, sick of losing games where we have more scoring shots than the opposition, sick of not having double chances when we do make finals.

Under Hinkley we lose too many games we should't, better than the Primus era for sure but after 5 years we should have at least played in a qualifying final by now. I'm not one to overrate my teams, I call bullshit when I see it, but we got 2 all Australians, Wines, Dixon and some others, and we played at home, and we bottled it.

Hinkley deserves one more year to improve on this year. If he can't get the team to at least a qualifying final in 2018, then I think it's time we get someone else in for 2019.

deathevocation my view of the game.

Repetitions again and again of match condition training drills faster snd stronger than normal match speed in threes
One drill perfect
One drill warp speed
Last drill faster that finals speed
X1000 of
Equals into subconcious

Equals composure under pressure

We dominated the game from the 2nd quarter right through to the end. We can't kick for goal under pressure. We would have been a chance against the gutless giants but the tigers would destroy us. Would have been fun though.

Disappointed as this game was just like the other times wce have beaten us in adelaide. We haven't learnt or improved.

On a positive, that was the only game of the weekend that deserved a finals billing. Intriguing from start to finish, hard, tough. Sadly I think the better team lost.

Yeah, I think they're doing a bit too much of that virtual reality training over the past 2 years.
Trouble is imagine the hammies with your idea.

I have it recorded and am trying to decide whether to watch, save for another time or just delete.

Delete and move on mate.

Only a 6 month wait until 2018.

Can't wait for the 2018 sequel 'second year blues for our youngsters'.

Well
I'm surprised we even made the finals really
Kept on falling over all year when it mattered
If by some fluke we won that game we were gonna get monstered later

Seriously how the f did we even end up in the finals

For these reasons I dont even care as we were imposters

Which means the ol flag or nothing high bar doesn't even apply

And

Eddy Eddy Eddy
Forget Trenners sorry

I want to ask Basset one question

Would you have played Eddy during the year and in finals

If answer is yes give him the job

The ONLY REASON there was an influx of youth late was because of showdown flogging ( remember ... again, didn't deserve to make finals)

Skills can be repititioned upwards and bloody need to ... Get Bassetts tight skill drill reps from the backline into the midfield and forward line
( give him the job)

Need a bit of Sydney midfield input

We have plenty of the pieces to work with .. In fact most of the pieces as far as players...

Who shouldn't be in there is a better question

Gone:
Broady
Impey
White
Monfries
????
Can someone tell me how old Krak is
He is also in the Eddy situation
Should be playing

In:
Bassett
Eddy
Krak
Stewy Dew
Warp apeed training reps ( by the zillion)

Actually because we shouldn't even have made it and the kids coming in I am already optimistic mext year

Ps here in Thailand I am already in to healing mode coz I couldn't get game in the end and wasn't scarred like every one else by the 'closeness'
Agree. The 84 point loss to Adelaide is the true indicator where we are at. Playing youth late was too late. I expect no changes over season change over. Our club has soft leaders. On and off field.

Angry about the loss. Shattered in fact. Also sad that the officiating of our premier national sport has dropped to a level where players who stage/act/dive for frees are rewarded by officials who dont know the rules.
We live in hope. This will go one of 2 ways in 2018. My fear is the boys will find it hard to get this monkey off their back. Happy to be proven wrong.
Carn the Maggies :disappointed:

One thing that cannot be labelled against us is that we are heartless. The guys played with passion and intensity all night, and never gave in.

However several other criticisms come to mind!

Lack of composure, even when often in the clear and not under any pressure whatsoever.

Deer in headlights syndrome - we just freeze when we play big games, finals, and quality oppo. Play against minnows and we play like a German band. Play a good side, even when they don't bring their 'A' game, and we are afraid to play freely, tense up, make silly mistakes, and it all compounds like an ever decreasing spiral until we implode.

Lack of skill execution - they keep telling us they work incessantly on it. I call bullshit! Other sides have displayed clear improvement in skills over time. We are worse than we ever have been in my memory. Get 10 skills coaches in over summer and each has 5 players to mentor with sessions every day on basic marking, kicking, handballing, picking the ball off the turf one grab without fumbling, tackling to pin the bloody arms not around the waist so they get handballs away, etc etc etc.

Mental frailty - our leaders went missing again. The kids were not the reason we lost. Either the experienced heads fumbled, or coughed up the ball, or failed to chase, or didn't man up. We get spooked big time, and our leaders don't actually lead. Tell me one of Wines, Boak, Chad, Hoff, Robbie, Hammer, Jasper, Ebo who was worth their place out there? Maybe Ollie cos he kicked two ripper goals, but other than that..................................... ** crickets **. Not acceptable.

How you change mindset and inner demons is something only an expert would know how to do. But it may be an unfixable issue with some of these older blokes.

On the positive side - the defence looked like it could be swamped early, but they fought back well after quarter time. Clurey did a great job on Kennedy. Dougal lifted after Petrie schooled him in the first quarter, and got better the longer the game went. Bonner started to run off half back. DBJ had a good last half and extra time. Huston kept Lecras scoreless. Marshall doesn't get many touches, but those he gets count. I see these guys being big time players who lift in the moment, and that we can build a side around.
Sam Gray tried his best as usual, Polec lifted mid way through the second quarter, Ryder amazingly beaten by Vardy/Petrie but put in as usual. And the big Chuck Wagon - BOG in my opinion. Kept us in it early, missed two he should have nailed (story of the night), but rag dolled a few blokes and was inspirational.

The culture of no accountability/no blame/all is fine with the officiating/we admire other clubs, etc from Ken is "OUT THE DOOR" forever. We are Port Adelaide. We don't give a flying f*** whether people like us or not.

We exist to succeed, not to make up the numbers and be a step ladder to others' success
. We are ruthless and will do anything (not doping) to be the best.

This club had better get tough, and make every individual accountable for elite performance and a winning culture, as opposed to a losing mentality and sub par performances, or we will continue to be trampled over, and suffer endless heartbreak (ala Richmond for the best part of 30 years).

Aand I haven't got 30 years left in my time on this rock to wait for that. So Pull the f****ing finger out Port and get serious with those who aren't prepared to do whatever it takes or who can't handle the pressure nor the glare of expectation.

The crowd was amazing last night. Best atmosphere I have ever heard. The players should have been inspired to achieve greatness, not the mediocrity that they dished out in spades. The supporters were fantastic. I was so energised and inspired to be amongst them all. They deserved better than that drivel served up which was paraded as supposedly elite football.

The club has to make hard calls - on players and coaches and support staff.
It starts today.
Not tomorrow.
Or next week.
Or December.
IT STARTS RIGHT BLOODY NOW.

Hinkley deserves one more year to improve on this year. If he can't get the team to at least a qualifying final in 2018, then I think it's time we get someone else in for 2019.

I really don't want to wait til this time next year to see if Ken can come up with some new ideas. Going through another preseason
with the same rubbish game plan will be such a waste of time and energy. Why are we so desperate to hang on to this guy?

After SANFL game last week they said Trengove was great playing in all parts of the ground at times. They then said they are bringing in Impey as he can offer us some cover around different parts of the ground if we need.

In the end at times we needed extra height down back (almost all their goals were from their tall forwards out marking us), Ryder needed more support in ruck / we needed a different option other than Westhoff, and McGovern absolutely destroyed Marshall with 25 possession and a game high 15 marks!!! 15!! It's not Marshall's fault being thrown in with no experience and a body that's not ready for AFL - it's the coaches.

Ultimately we could have won, we should have won, and in a game like that we can point to 10 different things that all hurt us - most notably goal kicking... which I believe is also a coaching issue of sorts. It's how we lost to the hawks in 2014, it's how we lost a few times this year, and many times in the last few years. Yet we have not improved and we will not win a flag until we do.

Time to hire a specialist goal kicking coach or change the ultra defensive game plan to try and give us shots on better angles - or both.

Dominating...mate,you were in front for like 12 minutes, and lost.
Crap ducking decision though, shitty end to a good game, that you should have won.

You can dominate a game without leading on the scoreboard. Of course your team just gets dominated in every aspect so you wouldn't know.
