I think they'll make finals (just) but not top 4. If WC had kicked a bit straighter they could easily have won that game. Hardly the formline you'd then go out and declare them certainties for top 4.

Clears our path straight into a prelim, Collingwood have to go play a QF in Sydney, followed by a banana peel against a more dangerous side than Essendon anyway (GWS, Brisbane, Freo).

The harsh reality is with the luck of how their draw has played out by playing weak teams or when teams are at their weakest (except Port and they fortunately got Sydney early in the season but still lost) they're 90% certain to face finals on current trends. Alas the kiss the pecker Gods have now given them Geelong, Pies and Melbourne when all 3 are at their weakest via a combination of injuries or poor form.

The other harsh reality is that when they've faced us, Sydney for example they've lost. Even Pies were playing poor and managed a draw. I tip 4 more losses minimum for them so at worst they get 13 wins with their fortunate draw just scraping them into the 8. We just need a team like the Saints and Adelaide to pull off a surprise win and if by luck they lose 2 of their next 3 then that could mean just missing the 8.

Remember they almost had West Coast get the better of them twice.

F### they make me sick. And if I was Simmo I'd be making the person who played on Stringer do extra push ups and laps this week.

Furthermore, he's good but not even in the top echelon of mids in the league. He's playing as a sole inside mid for a mid-table side and playing well. I genuinely think if Matt Kennedy was given the role as our only inside mid, he would be putting up similar numbers. Yet picking up this bloke can 'transform a club'.

I'm getting shit like this pop up all the time, just completely unaware that the good players they have are pretty much equal to their oppositions good players.

Beautiful thing is this is the Brad Scott way. Half-ass a rebuild & build a top 8 side through shrewd late picks, trading & free agency - this can work, when you master it like Geelong and to an extent.. Collingwood (who don't need to bottom out when they have F/S & academy players doing the work). But no way it will work for Essendon.

I bought up to a mate recently that Essendon didn't spend enough time at the bottom to pick up enough A-Graders through the draft, his response was "nah we have salary cap space now to get the A-graders" - like, did they not learn from Smith, Saad & Stringer?

They just hate doing things properly.

They love their late round, rookie and mid season draftees quite simply because they're better than almost all of their high draft picks. It's not the stellar list building exercise they think it is.
