Roast Essendon in no mans land

I feel like the wider footy public hasn't appreciated how funny it was that Essendon sacked their coach because they thought they were a shoe-in for Alistair Clarkson, missing out on him to a "minnow" in North, then having to scramble and appoint that minnow's old coach lol

That’s cool. He is one of the best small defenders in the game and he is helping us win plenty of games of footy. He would be a top 5 player at Essendon and you handed him away for Zach Reid because he didn’t buy into the EDGE. That’s gotta hurt.

He was a sook at Gold Coast, and Essendon. If Carlton start losing he'll sook it up again. Or maybe he's matured now. Either way, I'm happy he has found his way. I didn't like seeing his attitude before.

Essendon people definitely appreciated it. Just a total lack of surprise I think, nothing surprises us any more.

If you think Saad moves the dial slightly for us youre nuts. Id do that trade every day and twice on Sunday. What we should have done and what i was advocating for was to trade that pick for Collingwoods future first which turned out to be Callaghan.

Dodoro is just a dickhead who thought it was a good idea to take 2 top 10 talls, when we had 2 nga talls, who both showed enough to stick with if the list wasnt so unbalanced.

I actually think Brad Scott is a good coach in preplanning (has no plan b on gameday though), but it was just funny watching Bombers fans realise they were going to be stuck with a coach they'd been potting for years.

So Saad has played 72 games for Carlton (only missed one game), averaged over 20 touches per game and made the A A. Team for Carlton.

I know Zach Reid has had a lot of injuries in his 4 years but he has played 9 games for a total of 72 disposals. Clearly he can turn it round and has plenty of time left but to say that not having Saad doesn't move the dial is absolutely nuts. You would clearly be a better team with Saad playing for you rather than spuds like Kelly or Hind.

The "glad to be rid of good players because we'll be better off with magic bean draft picks" attitude has hurt your team particularly having Dodoro as the one to determine where the magic beans are planted.

We haven't traded out players often for magic draft picks. In fact our problem is historically trading out of way too many drafts for players that got us in this position. If you look at most of the superstar mids in the competition, we have had the chance to draft about 3% of them. The only way to get the talent we need is to trade into the ultra pointy end of drafts or finish lower down the ladder. Both mean you can't hold onto good quality players that aren't in key positions, because they will only keep you in no mans land.

Like we would infinitely better off, if we'd finished one spot lower and brought in Oliver and Wardlaw in those respective years. Because that one win too many while we are still a terrible team, is the type of dial moving keeping Saad may have. That doesn't actively move us closer to a premiership team.

I'm not saying I'd take the Saad for Reid trade. I'd take the Saad for pick 10 trade. I didn't want Reid. I wanted to trade to Collingwood who ended up trading that pick for 2 picks near 30.

Draft picks aren't pot luck. Dodoro is just shit, that doesn't change the fact the only way out is through the draft.

Poor game against Port this week but I just want to point out that we are we are 2 and 2 after playing every game on the opposition's home patch. I guess the problem is that for our first 13 games we play 12 games on the opposition's home patch. The exception is GWS at marvel. Yay to balanced fixtures.

We have to play 14 games away from our home city every year, with 13 of those on the opposition's home patch and one in neutral territory.
It doesn't stop us from winning silverware on a regular basis.

Bombers fans strutting around about "the edge", because they squeaked over the line against the Saints, who look like going goalless in the first half this week.

Firstly, I didn't say anything about Geelong being poor. You are well documented as a club well run. 8 games at home at a fortress is still great. We get 5 true home games or thereabouts every year. Marvel is a graveyard for success and I want out.

Turned out beautifully for n.melb

I'd say they have to move past Sheedy being involved with the club too, even if they haven't won a final without Sheedy at the helm since 1968.

We had Saad and it didn't move the needle then.

Strange and reactive thread. We are where we should be having beaten two very meh sides at home and lost to two good interstate sides on their home decks.

I absolutely agree with the long term view on Essendon, we have been putrid for 20 years but it’s far too early to be writing this season off when we sit 2-2. This even more so when you see how soft our run home in the back half is.

Yeah, it's obviously not the problem. Essendon's list problems are deeply ingrained and have been a perpetual issue since 2006. But the Shiel trade really ****ed us. Look at the 2018/19 drafts where we effectively had no picks compared to 2016/2020 in which we had strong hands. They were much, much weaker classes. With the picks we had in '20, right now there's only really a strong argument for picks over Cox - and they mostly all skew heavily towards hindsight is 20/20 type arguments
Can someone frame this for me?
