Re: Essendon sign Mal Michaels

I don't see that we would need Michael when we already have Fletcher at fullback. We could stick him at CHB but I personally don't think it would be a good move.

BRISBANE'S triple premiership fullback Mal Michael has stunned the Lions by announcing he wants to make a "comeback" to play for Essendon after a retirement of only a few weeks.

Michael, 29, last night admitted he had been approached by a couple of Melbourne-based clubs to continue his career as a player.
"I have just about reached an agreement to join a club in a deal which is going to be friendly to my plan to form a foundation to assist young players in Papua New Guinea," Michael said.

The powerfully built defender joined the Brisbane Lions in 2001 after four seasons at Collingwood.

In the past season Michael has said he was not prepared to devote himself to a full-time training routine but Lions coach Leigh Matthews questioned how a professional AFL player could operate successfully under that option.

"The club will be very disappointed if this (comeback) with another club was to occur," Lions football manager Graeme Allan said.

"We have acted in good faith in delisting Mal on the basis he told us he had retired from senior football.

"We will be speaking to the AFL about this matter."

Earlier this month, Michael said he would continue his football career next season with Ellinbank and District League side Nilma-Darnum Bombers.

Re: Essendon sign Mal Michaels

They also said Brisbane intend to complain to the AFL about draft tampering.

Michael was contracted for next year and Brisbane only let him out of his contract because he was going to retire.

Are you listening to Bowers on SEN? Not a happy man-talking about conduct prejudical to the draft.

Re: Essendon sign Mal Michaels

i dont think it would happen, sheedy would of tried but surely the afl will jump in and stop this, it is clearly not fair to a club (brisbane) who have given him so much. If he does this he is a disgrace and so is the AFL for having allowed it

Re: Essendon sign Mal Michaels

this should now release marc bolton to play as a permanent, game busting, dynamic and match winning forward.

Re: Essendon sign Mal Michaels

Brisbane must have known that this might happen when they delisted him ... if they weren't willing to risk it they should have kept his name on the list. It would have been hard to trade a player who was tossing up retirement, but a gambit in the draft is certainly worth it to a lower league Vic club, and he could teach the Dons a lot, especially how you must be committed to play in the big league ...

Re: Essendon sign Mal Michaels

I don't know if the dons have done anything wrong but from a Brisbane point of view they seem to believe he was delisted in good faith on the proviso that he not play at AFL level again. So i think if a finger is going to be pointed it should be at Mal, if he has given his word to the Lions then whats his word worth. It might not be trade tampering but it is dodgy.

Re: Essendon sign Mal Michaels

How is it tampering. My club retied him.He wanted a lesser training schedule, for his Foundation work.We said no, we said we wouldn't trade him at the time.

So very unnesseccary and messy all around.

Up until this season a terrific determined dedicated player/Unhappy this season for whatever reason.

I wish him well in whatever he does, he has been a champion at my club.

Re: Essendon sign Mal Michaels

It is clearly not tampering, nor is it unfair. The AFL would be acting ridiculously if they got involved in this, and the Brisbane Lions would be stupiud to pursue legal action.

Mal lost the passion to continue his playing career in Brisbane. If he decides to continue his career at another club, so be it.
