Autopsy Essendon v Hawthorn

The bad guys prevailed. Did we lose at the selection table? Or did the players that played not up to it? Dissect away
We forgot Essendon have something to prove and never stopped , and won the first half. Hawks did things that are not usual and they are humans remember.

It wasn't the selection table it was simply getting beaten when the chips were down, and we did look reasonably Hawkish in the third quarter.

I doubt if that complacency will be around next week or next time we play Essendon. I think the bombers looked good , we had two missing but that should not have meant a thing. No problem, during the first 6 weeks of the season , as far as I'm concerned its the settle in time , Port will be back also , just a no concentration day at the office.

Essendon played really well.

Apologies if this has been covered, but did anyone see what happened to Hill towards the end?

All I saw was him getting tackled front on and then he stayed down for a while without moving.

He hit his head on the ground in the tackle - quite similar to the Bartel incident except Hill hit his head getting tacked onto his back. Just one of those things.

he got absolutley drilled by ambrose.

Think he hit the back of his head on the ground, Didnt really have a chance to protect himself.

The losses were just too focussed and undermining to the backline which forced the next line to overcommit to support and then the system just fell over. Dropped marks, poor kicks, crap decison making and umpiring that was stupid rewarding diving in tackles with push in back.
Umpiring absolutely cost us the game but is irrelevant as we played so terrible we should never been in front and if the timekeeper had of stuttered we would have stolen it. The effort of spangher or litherland for Gibbo wouldn't have gone amiss.

Could get very ugly in a fortnight's time at Adelaide oval
We dish that crap up against a poor side and lost, imagine we dish the same crap up against a good side!

The next 3 weeks are so important to our season:

:How we respond v Dogs
:Can we match Port?
:Our new nemesis in the Kangaroo's

Interesting times ahead!

if you think Essendon are a poor side you dont watch much footy...

They are not yet up with Hawthorn/Sydney but are far far away from a poor side.

We actually won the clearances 49-29, so our midfield was quite good at the stoppages.

I thought our skills were down a bit, and we fumbled a bit too much all over the ground.

We actually finished with more inside 50's and more shots on goal, despite Essendon having far more diaposals, which points to how much more clinical we can be with possession.

There was a lot we could take out of the game which was positive considering our fightback with an early sub, but also some stuff to improve on.
"Clinical possession", I think that was what someone in our backline was talking about last week.

No excuse , NONE! What has got me is this new holding the ball/caught with the ball /holding the man/ push in the back. Well its as confusing as a couple of years ago. Some umpires are on it like hair on a dog and others... let it go , let it go. Some frees are insane , frees against the bloke making the play for being caught by a diving tackle , the next minute another umpire calls it in the back FROM THE SAME THING.
I THINK IT IS CLOGGING THE GAME EVEN WORSE.
Why is it every year we have some little change happens that stuffs up the season and unlike in times past there is hardly any discretion from the umpires just pedantic crap that sees sides lose advantage .
WHY WHEN A PLAYER GETS A FREE AND HE TAKES OFF A COUPLE OF FEET IN FRONT OF THE MARK , MR DIFFERENT COLOURS , BLOWS THE WHISTLE BRINGS HIM BACK, BY THEN THE MOMENTUMS DEAD IN THE WATER. It is just so "I AM THE UMPIRE" rubbish , last year didn't seem as bad but here we go again another change in rules where an umpire can umpire a team out of a game.
This is not about Hawks V Ess we got done , this is about frustrated viewing over the weekend , Geelong game was terrible , frees I couldn't understand from both ends and umpire pay backs to different teams after a shocking mistake . Ballantyne should have been freed in front of goal , wasn't , down the other end a let off for Freo and no free to Geelong player. PAY BACK DEFINITELY!!!!

Any one who says they can't see these things is kidding themselves , I thought we'd calmed the umps over adjudication of the game , but it is still there wrecking games. Sorry to whinge, fellow Hawks, but its as plain as the nose on your face if you really follow footy closely. Gerard and Robbo may say something on this .I hope.

You are a poor side, much like 75% of the competition
You absolutely dominated for the majority of the day, and fell over the line with Bruest running into the open goal to somehow win it for us!
North, Port, Sydney, Freo, Adelaide would have spanked us yesterday

Not about losing, It's about the fact that your pathetic excuse for a club is still in the league.

All 17 actual clubs consider the dons* games as practise matches. Hence the asterisk. Or have you not worked that out yet.

you team are drug cheats and you should feel bad.
say there, where did you get the user name "grumbleguts" from?

It's a long and complicated story, you really wouldn't understand it.

It's from when I and a few of my Doctoral students were looking at my university medal and ... never mind it's far too complicated for a person who can't understand cheating is bad.

Urgggggghhh. This hurts my brain. We played an awful first half. This match was like a regression: poor skill errors, yips in front of goal, Roughie missing for most of the match.

The most concerning thing was some of our 50 game youngsters really did poorly in this match. Also concerning were the injuries.

Well. Should give a kick up a lot of players, shut up the media and give hope to Box Hill Hawks waiting to pounce. Too many passengers for too long in this match.

50 game or less players are meant to have days where the instructions fall out of the brain. Essendon came to play. But those 2 to 3 year players all have that bad time , its called a learning curve. Remember Anderson will learn more every time , as do all the players in that time zone, this loss for me was timely and just let some blokes know they must concentrate and learn and stick to a plan. That can take a few seasons for some.

Hawthorn are a precision football team. Players have to practice and practice and then put it to work in real game situations. It takes time and they have to learn to fit with ready drilled blokes.

Knocking the newbies is not wise!

I have no problem with this loss, it'll wake some people up . Roughy was out of sorts, beaten, but no excuse, he was on the bloody ground so he got beaten.

Yes we could have used Frawley and Gibbo and Spanger and Litherland but we didn't have them or Sam , one soldier falls down another takes his place.

Shape up players who take those spots , Sam won't be here forever .

We got beaten by the tougher more aggressive and determined team. So get back to work.

We all know, that on our day we are the best.

Just don't tell the players that , they are never the best, any game any week any challenge, they have to aim to be the best.

Found it interesting Gunston, our only shinning light up forward was playing fullback for the last 10 minutes or so when we were desperate for a hit up inside forward 50.

I'm all for our team being adaptive and unpredictable as a whole, but sometimes you need to play to your strengths. Hird must have been laughing.

You might want to read the rest of the conversation, and then suck it up.

Your team are drug cheats and you should feel bad.

Hey grumble , there are no excuses mate. Also I have been railing against the unsatisfactory investigation by ASADA , over Essendon , with no evidence....
and you sir have just done what I have been worried about .

Creating these nasty surroundings by calling people cheats. by doing this you make us Hawks look stupid too.

No matter what the previous conversation was , its out of order. I put up with being ridiculed for ages over arguing there was no proof about this stuff now it must stop on BF as well.

Someone will get into trouble. Not on Big Footy but elsewhere. Where are the Mods on this?

Getting nasty because you get beaten is stupid.

I think different incident - the Rioli one was for a tackle deemed in the back despite being much identical to about a dozen that werent pinged. But the useless umpiring shouldnt overshadow the putrid football.

Agree. That Rioli in the back, which I think was paid to Heppell as a free, was bewildering. My word of the month. It was in his side and, as you said, they would have needed to pay about a dozen of them if they were being consistent. All in all the umps were average at best yesterday.

Port will have penciled this in. I thought that this would be a game we will lose, similar to Freo at Freo last season. But now we f..ked up Vs Ess, after Rd 4, we could possibly be 1-3 and then Norf Rd 5, who are our bogey team. It could well and truly get ugly.

So our players might want to pull their fingers out and start to play footy, because this season could get away from us in a blink of an eye.

As I think I mentioned in the game thread, I didn't watch the game (I'm one of those supporters who, if I'm not actually present at the ground, tends not to watch the game).

So here are some statistics to ponder.

Hawthorn's score of 11.10.76 is Hawthorn's lowest score since Hawthorn scored 9.12.66 in a 41 point loss to Richmond in round 19, 2013 (a streak of 33 games). Coincidentally, Hawthorn's score against Richmond came a week after the Hawks touched up Essendon by 56 points.

Hawthorn's loss to Essendon yesterday is the first time since round 6, 2010 that Essendon has defeated Hawthorn. Essendon broke a streak of five losses to Hawthorn with yesterday's win. The margin of victory (2 points) is the smallest since Essendon defeated Hawthorn in round 3, 2005 (which was also controversial at the time as a goal incorrectly awarded to Dean Solomon in the dying stages of the game actually came off the toe of Jonathan Hay and should have been held as a rushed behind to Essendon).

In a game where they were a step behind and subsequently rushed for most of the game, Burgoyne's ability to use those extra few seconds he can create for himself plus his sublime skills were invaluable yesterday. Needs more appreciation.

Burgoyne is always in the right spot at the right time.

It is so frustrating when you are playing against Hawthorn.

The bloke is a freak

It's called "Hope Hawthorn are off their game, and then hang on!".
there is no secret to what they did today. pressure by them and poor decision and execution by us. We lost mitchell gibson and frawley from our backline who we replaced with "soldiers" but not the same type let alone quality. I am happy with resting players and having the long view to winning the war but please make sure we don't let essendon win. The feeling I am left with is the same as when my grandma gives me a hand job after I have an argument with my mum and my sister is waiting for her warts to heal.

Langers was off the boil. He had a shocker. Isn't a lynching to say so. It's just factually discussing the game.

I agree. He just always seemed to be hanging out the back of the contest, waiting for the ball to come out to him,
rather than throwing himself in there and getting it out.

Its quite pathetic and i appreciate your comment, I would think anyone from Hawthorn would be the last to say anything about drugs considering their history with recreational drug usgage.
Players choosing recreational drugs on their own time vs the system Jimmy the Knife tried to set up. heck me mate, seriously?

Calling someone a cheat when they are not proven guilty is beyond stupidity, but i understand its mostly just out of frusration.

Even the AFL's Kangaroo Court said, words to the effect of "They wanted to import the gear, the chemist thought he was mixing the gear we just can't see proof that it was administered despite knowing injections took place off site away from club medicos." What do you think they were doing:?

It was a great game. Hopefully Essendon V Hawthorn in the finals and it can replicate it, in our favor i might add!

It wasn't a great game by us, we played very ordinarily. Whether you think your lot caused it or we did doesn't matter (probably a combo of both), the standard of football by us yesterday was nowhere near what we can do. Hence the comments re a "shit game" or similar repeated in here.
