Appearantly Gary Lyon was the one who said Gumbleton would be out, when asked what for, he said he "wasn't sure". One of the reasons suggested was, get this, a windy day.

C'mon. Really? If anything, a windy day would propel him even higher.

Knights is crazy if he's withdrawing Gumby for anything other than an injury.

This is a game we must win and he should be chucking everything we have available at Melbourne in order to do so.

Ridiculous.

I'd love this.

Also,

Implying he'll ever be...

Not implying he will be just used the Fletcher analogy because he's a similar body type to Fletcher sort of like this:

Rain + Wind = not great conditions for Gumbleton and Neagle together

Windy weather means delivery will be worse than usually. That means it will be hard to hit up forwards. So there will be more ground ball to be won, which is hard work for tall forwards. Therefore you'd rather go a bit smaller to ensure you have a small rather than a tall at ground level when the ball comes in. Gumbleton isn't great below his knees so he may get a rest for Lonergan (or Melksham).

...Gumbleton isn't great below his knees ...

I beg to differ...

And anyway, windy weather usually gives you that extra 10 or so meters, so you'd think kicking it into the forward 50 when the wind is on your side would actually be an advantage to tall forwards on the run. Of course, the wind isn't always going your way, but that's where the small goal sneak forwards come in.

You've gotta have a mix of both imo.

Knights is really shooting himself in the foot here, we already have our fair share of "non availabilities". We don't need any more.

Even on a windy day the ground is pretty sheltered, it's not like it's at a suburban ground, so if it's only the wind they are worried about I think that's a bit strange.

That said he's definately not at the stage where he's a big loss, in terms of structure or ability (I'm just glad that he's been getting games under his belt), so I don't think it'll matter much.

If gumby doesn't play it's another game lost at the selection table, going to small is killing us. just like last week and the swans game off the top of my head teams are putting in 3 talls in their forward line kicking it in long and creating tons of pressure for are backline, meaning a ruckman might have to drop back taking away are plan b up forward.

So u can be sure Melbourne will do the same thing and with only one tall forward neagle will get double team making it really hard for him to have any impact at all. Overall unless gumby is injured it's a bonehead move.

People are aware I was merely speculating that the weather could be the cause, right?

as much as I'm sure people think you're the font of all knowledge on BF, I think most people are saying it because it was apparently reported as such in the media:

Surely that's not possible... is it?
Perhaps the wind will actually help blow the kicks on target....

I think that Essendon have a great shot. If we are going to win we need our captain, Jobe Watson, to play close to his best and we need someone in our forward line to fire. Either Neagle or Gumbleton need to kick a couple and with a few of our small crumbing players we should be able to kick a winning score. Recent history shows that we have the edge over Melbourne so hopefully we can keep that going and win on the weekend.

I'm a font of knowledge? Oh I do hope I'm not wingdings.
