Sorry guys, probably not the right time of year to be talking about this sort of thing...with the future so bright.

But the gaping hole in our list....thats right, the 22-27 year old group can be explained by the following.

Only 5 players remain from the Gary Ayres drafting era. (I have only included players from the NAB Draft as I believe this is where Adolf had most of the control, the rookie draft I put down as mainly the recruiting staff. I also haven't included trades ie Thompson & Symes).

1999: Biglands (Who has done his knee and is gone IMO)

2000: Johncock

2001: Reilly (this was a superdraft too)

2002: Shirley (who is probably close to the end), Jericho (Who has played bugger all games and will be delisted)

2003: Not one player remains.

So really only 2 players out of here can be rendered useful in the next 5-10 years of our football club.

Definitely need our new batch to come on (which I have strong confidence in) and our future drafting to be of a very high standard.

*Please forgive me for stating the obvious that drafting under Ayres was poor. Yes I do feel like Tim Watson.

Gee thats poor!

Fergus Watts, Josh Krueger and Ben Hudson were from 03.

This comment could also be posted on our worst recruiting decision thread with the 2 non South Aus coaches being the worst decisions for mine.

I really feel sorry for the Bulldogs because the way I see Eade developing that team is so similar to what Ayres did with us.

Surely Fantasia must take the bulk of the responsability. I know ayres pulled rank on him a few times, but not with majority of his selections. Maybe we have just had a lot of bad luck as well.

Well thats true, there are a few rookie list guys that are with us though Rutten, Bock etc, but yes our recruiting has been far from stellar. We just seem to make stupid decisions and have no luck what-so-ever I just hope that tide is going to turn in our favour soon. Though I suspect one big recruiting decision that was recently made by us will have us shaking our heads in about 2-3 years time, but I wont mention that and wait and see how it pans out.

Thats alright you can tell us, we are all grown up. I am hoping that Dangerfield will be a star as well.

That wouldn't be Rodney over Ebert would it?

How did you guess :p, it's not so much whether Dangerfield will be a star moreso our record with victorian players heading home especially when a genuine star SA player was available.

This was one of the most major drafting decisions the club has ever made IMO, we will either be recruiting genuises come out even or look like Fremantle. I just have a really bad feeling about this decision and I dont know why.

I WISH people would stop being whinging little bitches about the Dangerfield trade already. Give it 2-3 years FFS!!! I can't help but think that people assume Ebert will become some kind of star just because of his sirname. Both players are unproven at AFL level and we will only know which one is the better player in 4-5 years time. And just because he is Victorian, it doesn't mean he will leave as soon as he hits form/contract expires.

Why can't people just wait and see how things pan out before whinging and complaing and bitching about our draft picks!?!?

how can you say for example that Symes doesn't count as a carry over? Mattner was one of his players, and we traded him for someone else.

so in that discussion, he has to be added too.

what I would say is that 1999 shouldn't count, but that 2000 was an average draft, 2001 was a superdraft, and we filled our boots; 2002 we barely participated in - which is good; and 2003 is very disappointing.

we got as much out of 2000 & 2002 as could be expected, but 2003 was a poor effort. 2001 was a great haul.

I can't believe people think Ebert will be a star because of his surname.Remember Ricky O'Loughlin, Michaels brother. That worked well.:p

Mattner was taken in the rookie draft.

And all we got out of 2001 was Reilly.

I'm not counting rookies as my point is related to our use of the National Draft.

2003 netted us Scott Stevens for pick 48. Also, Fergus Watts (whilst not a great drafting decision) still got us pick 17 in a later draft. Pick 50 something we used on Hudson which went ok.

2003 wasn't as bad as some make it out to be.

you're not counting rookies because it's counter to your argument, not that they shouldn't be included.

obviously they should.

Indirectly, all we have left from that draft is Jarrhan Jacky. And maybe Myke Cook's leg.

All 22-27. Thats 15 by my count (Maric & Griffin only just scrape in by a matter of weeks). Although Jericho and Campbell (and possible Hentschel - hope not) may not be on the list next season, I think the original thread makes the "gaping hole" out to be a bit worse than it actually is.

for any proper evaluation, you have to include the national draft, psd, rookies and the trades and also analyse the overall picture taking into account what stage the list was, where we were in the premiership clock, etc etc

Thats not a terrible list of names by any means.

I think we are now a lot better off in this age bracket than many think.

There's some brilliant defenders in there and very good midfielders.

Yeah, its not this age bracket which is really the problem, its probably the 25-30 year olds is where we are lacking, but the youngsters are now starting to take over, which is a good sign, in a year or so, we should be looking at a good spread of players between the 20-27 year old braket, which is really what you want to win premierships, with perhaps a Goodwin, Mcleod and Edwards still hangin round to create problems Robert Harvey style.

Thompson, vince, Gill, porpy, Maric, Griffin & campbell were brought in by Neil Craig. So its fair to say there was a fair hole in the list that has been identified by the coaching staff and they've tried to fix it.
