link doesn't work...

That's odd, it works for me. I'll quote it:

Target: Withdraw Grand Theft Auto 5 – this sickening game encourages players to commit sexual violence and kill women

It's a game that encourages players to murder women for entertainment. The incentive is to commit sexual violence against women, then abuse or kill them to proceed or get 'health' points – and now Target are stocking it and promoting it for your Xmas stocking.

This is Grand Theft Auto 5. This game means that after various sex acts, players are givenoptions to kill women by punching her unconscious, killing with a machete, bat or guns to get their money returned.

Please Target – we appeal to you as women survivors of violence, including women who experienced violence in the sex industry, to immediately withdraw Grand Theft Auto V from sale.
One of many fan clips on YouTube shows the woman being run down, run over, set alight and, still screaming, repeatedly shot. This misogynistic GTA 5 literally makes a game of bashing, killing and horrific violence against women. It also links sexual arousal and violence.

We have firsthand experience of this kind of sexual violence. It haunts us, and we've been trying to rebuild our lives ever since. Just knowing that women are being portrayed as deserving to be sexually used by men and potentially murdered for sport and pleasure – to see this violence that we lived through turned into a form of entertainments is sickening and causes us great pain and harm.

This game spreads the idea that certain women exist as scapegoats for male violence. It shows hatred and contempt for women in the sex industry and puts them at greater risk. Women in the industry are 40 times more likely to be murdered by a man than any other group of women.
Games like this are grooming yet another generation of boys to tolerate violence against women. It is fuelling the epidemic of violence experienced by so many girls and women in Australia - and globally.

Target, you pride yourself on being a family company, caring for local communities, and have a strong ethical sourcing policy. How can you do this while contributing to hostile and callous attitudes toward victims of violence and, more broadly, to all women?
We urge you to follow the example set by the New Zealand’s largest retailer, NZ Warehouse Group, in upholding Corporate Social Responsibility and ethical corporate leadership, by removing these games.

This would also set an example to other stockists of GTA V.
Please put ethics before profits and make a strong statement that you do not condone sexual violence, sexual exploitation or the abuse of women as ‘entertainment’.
Nicole, Claire and Kat.

A feminist online petition has managed to convince all Target stores in Australia to stop selling Grand Theft Auto 5:

So this is what we are coming to. Jokes on Target really, this will only raise publicity for the game and they will lose even more profit.

tesseract , SpuriousPea I wonder, are Target going to pull 50 shades of grey if we started a petition about it's depiction of men?

Reveling in female sexuality: liberating, empowering, so brave

Reveling in male sexuality: toxic, problematic, rape culture

A ****ing video game where you play drug dealing, murderous scum that kills indiscriminately, where you have to torture a guy, where all the storyline kills are men, where it's actually implied one of the main characters rapes a guy; is bannable because in free-roam you can root hookers and then run over them to get your money back?

I suppose it just highlights the rampant rape culture we live in these days....

Having said that, I don't have a problem with consumer revolts, no matter how misguided.

It really is like the Bizarro world SP. I did have a chortle that a woman who made this petition, who sold her body for sex complains about woman in the game being used for sex..

For goodness sake, I reserve the right to say that .... is good looking and that .... is father material and ...
is good for growing progeny and ... some other 'turd' is wanted for good conversation...

Howling in the grasslands are plenty of human personalities who are glad to make the acquaintance of any other
male who is a little more than alive and kicking...

Short and sweet! Haven't much else to sell but happy... :)

I'd suggest you get yourself comfortable. Mr Bones' Wild Ride has only just begun.

Remember Emma Watson's feminist speech - encouraging men to embrace their feminine side? Yet, Emma Watson's current BF is as as masculine as can get: 6'4, bearded rugby player.

No-one argues that women should be allowed equal rights - that is common sense. Unfortunately, many feminists are quite happy to wear the feminst shoe when it suits them, while also slipping into the traditional role when it the occasion calls for it.

A perfect example is the dating scene. Women still 'marry up' in their hordes, and then complain when all the good guys are taken.

Lets not kid ourselves here, most feminists are eloquent wordsmiths in public, but raging hypocrites in private.
Yeh those ****ing feminist bitches should know their place!

You guys realise a retailer has the right to listen to its customers?

How many teenage "feminazi's are the reason I can't get laid!" types actually shop at Target or KMart?

There's your answer for why GTA5 got removed (not banned, removed from two retailers).

Kmart have just axed the game as well.

Kmart and Target are owned by Westfarmers, would be weird if one sold and the other didn't.

I am a bit cynical, I think this could be little more than a pre-christmas promotion, women are by far the target demographic of these stores, when you see the one isle for men and half a store for women clothing it isn't tough to figure out.

I find it condescending to take a stand on this while you exploit child sweatshop workers in third world countries who want to kill themselves making your budget clothes and oppressed chinese factory workers mass producing the plastic rubbish they sell to kids.

I guess we will have to see what happens when GTA6 is made, will they want to get in on that action?

Most who signed the petition weren't from Australia.

No doubt, but I think a lot of the angst towards this is to the petition itself.

The petition states that players get "health points" for killing prostitutes - which is an absolute lie. This petition was made and signed by people who probably haven't even played the game and yet are spreading lies to further their own agenda.

Another thing is you aren't required to kill any women, all the kills you do to finish the story are against men.

As far as the "influencing kids" things well it's pretty well established there is no link there, a quick Google search will reveal countless studies. So again, another made up statement from these people. It's all emotive hyperbole that is aimed at the Today Tonight/ACA type crowd. If they are pushing for this why don't they push for a ban on the bible as well, or anything else in the store for that matter.

How about parents actually parent and not let their kids play a R+18 game instead of whining that the state/retailers do their parenting for them? The R18+ label is there for a reason!

They are really no different to the hard religious right wingers who want to censor anything that they personally find offensive.

Yeah but... who gives a ****? You can go to EB and get it anyway

Well I read on their comments that they want to get it banned at JB Hi Fi and elsewhere too. That won't happen, but when people try to push censorship based on lies then yes I give a ****.

I mean at least know what they are trying to ban. They couldn't even do that.

I'm not saying your criticism isn't valid. I'm saying the issue isn't really that big a deal, chill out and focus on something like Net Neutrality or the data retention.

Consumers have a right to lobby businesses even for stupid reasons, that's one of the few downsides to democracy.

If they think it will earn them more money they have the right to not sell it.

It is a company, they have the right to sell or not sell anything that is legal.

I still find it hypocritical if they pull GTA based on the way women are portrayed and they continue to sell Game of Thrones which treats women like shit and even have women r*ped during it, and have a prostitute executed for sport by the king.

This opens a can of worms that they can now be hit by barrage after barrage of petitions to pull all sorts of shit off the shelves and if they say no they now come across as hypocritical by being selective.

I think it is great if stores impose ethical standards, but if it isn't consistent i smell bullshit. Ultimately they will be held accountable by the consumers and the shareholders. If there is a gaming consumer backlash against Target/Kmart then that short leash is going to get yanked.
