Opinion First Choice Ruck - Pitto vs TDK

TDK's '21 numbers are a little bit skewed though; he played second fiddle to Pitto in 4 of his 13 games and then had the other where he went off really early, only playing 19% TOG. Deduct those 5 and his average hitouts are up from 16.8 to 22.3. Disposals and marks also both marginally increase from 9.5 & 3.1 to 10.6 & 3.5 respectively.
Cheers: 22 h/o, 3.5 marks + 10 disposals actually looks really solid. If he can stay fit and increase that by 15% for 2022 we have an above average ruck for the long term. Anything more is a bonus.

For me he's got the drive and talent to get there. It's just about his body holding up (which hopefully will as he gets used to his final form).

As TDK and Pitto are our two weakest 22 players (if we play both) I don’t really want to see them both play in the same side. How we achieve this requires some magic and planning.

Please Voss, solve this problem.

Other than that, TDK our preference with Pitto to either relieve TDK every 5th game or play vs the tank ruckman like Witts.

I’d go TDK when fit he’s got great agility and footwork at the throw ins
He has a burst of speed to charge and chase the ball like Kruze
He has to play he needs game time to develop.consistency needs to built over consecutive games
With a good preseason I think he can impose himself on the game
He still looks a bit nervous and excited just needs continuity to relax into the role
It’s going to be an interesting offseason with the new coaches choosing who they want where
I’m tipping the intensity is going to be high at training as the pecking or is set and challenged just hope we don’t get to many injuries from it

At 22 odd, we'll ruin TDK if we play him as first ruck.....week in, week out.

Tell the kid he'll be picked when the match up is a lightly framed/athletic type (if in form) but otherwise he can hone his ruck/forward craft in the 2s.

Pitto plays most weeks (again if in form).

Pitto can play forward and cause mis matches.... just dragging a defender away from H and Charlie is enough. Leave him on his own and Pitto is a good kick for goal. The club rates him highly and young for a ruck.
Is he actually a good kick for goal?

Seem to remember most of his shots being fairly easy, kinda close and not extreme angle, yet he didn’t kick his first for us until this year.

He seems (eye test) to be fairly reliable from short-mid range (say 35m). He's another of many in our team that can't be relied upon for the 45-55m bombs, which makes us play with a more crowded forwardline.

Hopefully TDK can have a terrific pre-season, injury free and put on some beef as well. He has a great leap on him, great athleticism and can do some real damage up forward as well. All going well, I believe Pitto can play VFL most weeks as he really is no more than a good old-fashioned ruckman. Lumbering, cannot really get off the ground and does very little around the ground.

I think people are getting a little over-excited by TDK's athleticism atm - he'll take some time to add to his game.
For all all of the promise, on present output he offers little more than Pittonet around the ground playing as a ruckman, where he does have an advantage is in his work forward of centre IMO.

I've always thought that a forward line of Harry, Charlie and JSOS, as well as a 2nd ruck (TDK/Pitto/Young) is too tall and not quick or agile enough for modern day AFL.

Personally, developing JSOS as someone who can provide a chop out in the ruck is our best way forward. In my eyes Jack provides so much more than simply ruck relief.

Yep just manage the rotations. If Young and JSOS are both in the 22, then Voss and co can manage the rotations to keep TDK fresh and keep options covered.

Young is very tall so allows us to not get slaughtered in the ruck if they get a run on against JSOS. JSOS can try and take advantage like he did at times this year. Rotate guys like Kemp into Young's role when he comes into the ruck. Rotate guys like Kennedy into JSOS' role when he goes in.

TDK + Pitto is safer and requires less planning + gameday movements ... but also slower and lower ceiling.

I agree with everything you've mentioned, but where do you fit both TDK and Pitto in the 22?

You can keep the spare ruck on the bench and rotate him forward, but then you'll end up with Harry, Charlie, JSOS and the 2nd ruck in the same forward line at the same time - personally I think that's too tall and slow.

TDK and Pitto cannot be in the same side. Modern game doesn’t allow it. Too much need for pressure and ability to dispose well. Play TDK and chop out with GSOS, Harry in the forward line etc. It’s all been said before Pitto needs more strings.

Totally agree. If you had two ruckman like Melbourne who offer so much threat forward then that is different. But we don’t have either. Our two ruckman are currently our two weakest players on field. This means one at most.

Carlton need to devise a plan with one ruckman. That’s on Vossy and his crew. Hopefully someone in that group has got some acumen.

Disagree, I think against the better (ruck) sides, you almost need two rucks to work over a Max Gawn type......
