Is this going all too far? Life is a risk, you can't eliminate it. You take a risk when you hop in your car or ride your bike.

I know it is different for kids but if you are a sound of mind adult and you participate in an activity you should be aware of the risks and be cognizant of possible outcomes.

There is only so "safe" a sporting organisation can make its product, as long as they have adequate insurance for injured players possible medical costs.

I am guessing one of the driving forces going forwards behind this movement will be the cost of personal injury/indemnity insurance.

All insurance premiums will be going up to cover the increased costs to insurance companies in general.

If organisations wish to reduce their premiums and excess they will need to demonstrate they are reducing the risks of a possible claim.

I have got no attachment whatsoever to the centre bounce.... Meh/Ho hum.
Agree.
There are many reasons to dump it and very few to retain the bounce.
But tradition appears to be winning out at present.

To balance the article, they included 4 minutes of perfect bounces and state "something so satisfying about a perfect bounce"
The exact same outcome is achieved by throwing the ball up.

Maybe if some other states follow SA & WA thing may change at AFL level.

The problem is the line across the middle of the centre circle which causes wayward bounces to be unfair. Get rid of that, keep the bounce and flick the need for recalled bounces delaying play. Keeps a unique aspect of our game alive and more importantly keeps coaches guessing.

For newbies, the centre line was brought in at the start of the 1980 season as a knee jerk reaction to Peter Moore and Gary Dempsey “wrestling” at centre bounces during the 1979 Preliminary Final.

While I've been supportive of removing the bounce, it's more down to the recalls and that umpires are given higher standing if they can bounce a ball rather than make good decisions. I like the randomness of the bounce though and I think balls being thrown up might lead to an increase in knee injuries to ruckmen. I'd probably prefer the line to stay - we see enough wrestling in ruck contests around the ground as it is and I think it would definitely be exploited by coaches

The AFL do have a weird fixation on the aesthetics of the ruck contest, ala the Marty Primus rule of 2003.

I would say we would have no players on a Million dollars +, Lachie Neale in the 800-900K bracket would be my guess as our highest paid player.

This article gave me a laugh. AFL and Tasmania

Kimmel: “On gravel, that’s not kidding around.”

Blanchett: “They lose a lot of players but … it’s why the population’s really small.”

Blanchett: “And the hole in the Ozone layer is right over Australia so it’s really, it a very very difficult game. So that was nothing last night Patrick.”

Dayne Beams signed to play at a local club Pearcedale in 2023. Should be interesting.

Ryan Bastinac played there in 2022 and his father Peter Bastinac is senior coach.
