AFL is a league not a sport. The sport is Australian Rules football.

Or am I missing something here?

I live overseas and i speak of it as Aussies Rules Football other wise people get confused ..... but back home it don't matter what you stick before or after it -it's still FOOTY to me

Well what i only care about is that i know AFL is still called AFL by the end of this year. I'll just get use to these other names if they have to change them for the sake of soccer.

Australia

In Australia, the word "football" has at least four different meanings, depending on geographical location and/or cultural factors. Australians usually mean Australian rules football or rugby league and rugby union when they use the word football, although some people refer to association football (soccer) as "football". The Australian men's soccer team is commonly known by the nickname "Socceroos" (the country's women's team is known as the "Matildas").
Most Australians fall into five categories when it comes to using the word football:
  • In most of the Australian states, the word "football", or its shortened form "footy", refers to Australian rules football (which is also called "Australian football" or "Aussie rules"). Although most people in these states are aware that there are two forms of rugby football, both are often referred to simply as "rugby".
  • Most people in the states of New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland, in which rugby league is the most popular code, refer to both rugby league and rugby union simply as "football" or "footy". Australian rules is often known in these areas as "AFL" (a name which, strictly speaking, refers to the main governing body and competition within the code). However, in some regions within NSW and Queensland, Australian rules is popular, and "football" may refer to that code.
  • Rugby union is usually referred simply as "rugby" by its followers, who generally refer to rugby league as "league". However, the same people sometimes use the word "football" for one or both games.
  • In areas in which two or more codes of football are popular, especially the Australian Capital Territory, the Northern Territory, the Riverina and Cape York, the word "football" could refer to any code. The names "Aussie rules" (or just "rules"), "league", "union" and "soccer" are usually used, to avoid confusion.
  • Association football is commonly known as soccer in Australia. In 2004, the governing body changed its name to Football Federation Australia, and began to refer to soccer as "football", causing controversy. Sports reporters at the Special Broadcasting Service, the Sydney Morning Herald, and several other Sydney-based outlets now refer to the code as "football", without qualification. However, national media organisations, and those in other major cities, generally still use the word soccer. Association football is hardly ever referred to as "footy" in Australia.
In Australia, American football, which has a small following, is sometimes known as gridiron, but is equally referred to simply as American football, without confusion.

Soccer is an American word - I speak English. In english, the beautiful game is called football.

Actually in Australia we speak Australian English. In Australian English it's called soccer, except by insecure 'Aussies' who want to kill off Australia's unique cultural identity and turn us into some second rate tryhard Eurotrash copycat state.

Agree fully, however I was focussing on the average attendance for the AFL in total not one indivdual club. Collingwood I think had an average attendance of around 60,000.

The best decision soccer made was moving to a summer season. There is little competition for a fixtured competition and it is quite easy to schedule around key cricket matches. Soccer can only go from strength to strength by retaining a summer season. I would expect that over the next five to ten years, soccer will be the second strongest football code in Australia.

For mine, its perfect. I can follow the Hawks during the AFL season and the Victory during the summer.

This is not entirely true. The Asian champions league starts soon and soccer home games will be on in Sydney and Adelaide. Melbourne next year. Soccer will essentially now be all year long, as in europe

Football in this country (well bar NSW and QLD) is aussie rules.

Lol, that's like saying:
People in this country (well bar those with a сock) are women.

Personally, if your going to call the game something else besides footy, I reckon aussie rules is the go, mind you that's probably more to do with my dislike of the AFL administrators rather than the actual term AFL.
