Franks for the memories. Things don't always go well with COLA

I can't believe Sydney are so stupid. Signing a player for 9 years.

Warren Tredrea was interesting on Adelaide radio this morning. He said Franklin is the same age as he was when he won the 2004 flag at Port. He said he'd never felt better, had played about the same number of games as Franklin and felt he could play for many years to come.

Four years later his career was over. Injuries became harder to recover from, he became slower, and he was finished at 30. He topped it off by saying when Franklin ends his 9 year contract, he will be the same age as he (Tredrea) is now.

He didn't need to say any more, his point was well made.

Completely agree. If this was not the case how the hell did Sydney miraculously have the massive salary space to make the play for Buddy. Sydney would never have gone to the lengths they did (i.e. not signing mumford and white) if they had not received feedback from Buddy that he would definitely come to the swans if they made the offer they made. 100% bullshit from both Franklin and Sydney. Contracts like that can not be created in a day or so. Its a weird thing to say as your team just beat my team in a grandfinal, but I would rather Hawthorn won the 2014 flag than that cheating swans mob.
I'm also OK with Freo and Pav winning it all. We had our redemption.

Back to Back 2014!!

1. Hawthorn versus Sydney Grand Final in 2014
2. Hawthorn lead by 2 points with just seconds left to play
3. Lance Franklin marks the ball on the siren on 50 and has the set shot and hits the post, costing the COLA Swans the flag in the process.
4. Hawthorn are the 2014 Premiers winning by 1 point and claim back to back flags, while Franklin is on the ground in tears having cost his team a chance of winning.

Let's hope. ;)

your missing the point....sydney not only have a $ 1mill bigger salary cap, they also have a plethora of outside marketing/promotional and game development concession payments that is not talked about (except for Eddie Macguire this morning)...paying Bud $1mill a year in 5 years time is peanuts to them with the enormous concessions they have...further there funded and bankrolled by the AFL.

Kieren Jack would have almost his whole salary outside he cap. Goodes would not be far behind. Maybe McVeigh too.

This. From his comments today I feel as though he thinks he has outgrown the HFC and it's a bit like a young adult leaving the family nest and spreading their wings. However the grass is not always greener and I suspect it will not all be as great as he thinks it will be in Sydney. He came to the club as an 18 year old and he's now nearly 27 so, yes, people can and do change a lot during that time. I'm not really that angry with Buddy, just sad about the whole situation as I would have liked him to stay :( Definitely not worried about Hawthorn, we will continue on with business as usual. I'm sure all the other players and coaching staff are already turning their minds to the tantalising prospect of possibly going back to back in 2014.

I absolutely agree - he's trying to enter into manhood by moving to Sydney. However, he wants to maintain his boyish ways. I can see it going pear-shaped for him. He should have at least gone to GWS and attempted captaincy and developing a new club, growing the game of football. It would have been good to see how he handles the role. He would have earned respect from the AFL community, and left HFC with his reputation in tact. People say he would never have been a Gary Ablett Jnr., but they wrote off Ablett as captain before he went to GC.

Would he still be welcome? Yet to hear any real reaction from the club...The silence is deafening
mmmm wonder that i reckon it would be a mixed reaction from those attending either some boos or silence may get the odd clap but .

he wouldn't care...he'd get over it within 24 hours....$10 mill is guaranteed, he's won 2 flags...the guy was thinking of joining the swans after he'd lost a gf in the manner that we did

So, who is telling lies? The SS club,Pickering or Buddy? SS tells the media Buddy told them 2 weeks after the GF 2012 he wanted to play with the SS club. Buddy told the media today,he had not made up his mind up to leave the Hawks until a few mins before the announcement was made.Liar,Liar,Liars. He knew weeks before he made the decision about re-signing in Feb/March. He should have been honest,to me it stood out like a beacon!Lying was all over his face.

Are you able to elaborate on all these extra concessions (apart from the COLA)? What are they? And are they only available to Sydney? I'm really starting to get pissed off with all this assistance they've been receiving from the AFL, and will continue to receive.

AFL set to rubber stamp the deal apparently. They better make sure that the Swans pay every cent of that money.
Unless Sydney have some deceitful way out of this I would welcome the possibility that they be held to the contract. Nine years is a long time. Buddy is over his best. Good luck to them when the COLA is withdrawn next year and they have to fund a fading talent.

No brainier.
Match the offer. Insert clause into contract that stipulates that he can't have drugs in his system in the workplace. (We can then activate it whenever we see fit.)
GWS had something similar in their offer, Sydney don't so they're stuck with him regardless.
Let him go into the preseason draft to be picked up by GWS. Hawks receive adequate compensation due to the fact this is orchestrated by GWS and Hawthorn.

Enjoy ANZ Stadium and the drive by shootings.

I don't do that anymore but I could be persuaded...........
