Fraser Gehrig back

Wow, looks like the Saints are having a real crack at a flag next year, they have loaded up on a lot of experienced talent via trades and now are bringing back Fraser

What makes everyone so sure that Fraser Gehrig will go back to Stkilda.Remember Richmond will get first crack in the uncontracted players draft in Dec,Isn't the bulldogs and a few other teams ahead of Stkilda ?
The saints will have to nominate him as a late pick in this weeks draft otherwise he'll go to another club i reckon.

Is he allowed to do that what with draft tampering provisions and all that?
I seriously doubt it but I can’t see anyone actually getting too hysterical about it. Mind you if it was Buckley it would be a different kettle of fish. I hope no one else takes him and he gets to the Saints. That is where he belongs and where he will play his best footy.

because he said he will only play for the saints...

I wonder if the AFL will investigate this as closely as they investigated Essendon's regular breaches.

he won't play at another club.. other clubs won't bother picking him because he wont play, it would be a waste of a pick... they'll let him play at st kilda.. and besides.. i dont think many clubs would change their way of playing for however long to accomodate 1 guy for 1 season maybe 2..

It has been reported that way, but I doubt it has come out of Fraser's mouth the draft rules being what they are.

what are they?

you don't have to play at a club unless you sign.. the draft doesnt mean you automatically sign.. it just allows clubs to offer you a contract exclusivley... didn't tim watson get drafted to westcoast at the end of his career but refused to play or something?

True.

Many ppl think a guy is simply up for grabs when they hear PSD or National Draft...but most players have things organised beforehand and there isnt a single club at AFL level that would bother drafting a bloke who was healf hearted about their club...like the Richmond/Calton PSD possibilty with Judd recently. Judd had a hundred ways of not playing for anyone else and even if the Tiges had the PSD pick they wouldnt bother if they knew he wasnt interested in them. You can bend rules as long as u dont break them.

Cant see any issue with Gehrig...he's allowed to change his mind if he likes and its probably for 1 season only. No club will stand in the way of it.

I'd laugh if the scraggers took him

I reckon most club presidents ears would've pricked up if its only for one yr and not on too much $...they'd see the novelty (as well as performance) value for any club fans in the short term.

If he said he didnt care who he played for and wasnt asking much then it'd be very tempting for a season....no downside to it. Might be a spoiler in the crowd on Saturday ya never know...would be funny.

No, as I alluded to in another post Gherig needs to stay with St Kilda so he can be called the 'Frankston Frankenstein'

The only reason someone would draft him is to stop St Kilda taking him..

You have to draft a player you want before another team wants him. Thats just how the draft works.

Nobody will draft him just to spite StKilda. Theres no room for luxuries like that. He will be drafted by a club that thinks they can use him.

That said, I think he's a very good chance to drop to the Saints. It will be interesting to see what pick they use.

i havent read through the whole 10 pages of this thread, but incase it hasnt been mentioned yet, fraser was going to play for Narre Warren provided Aussie Jones was still captain/coach there. unfortuantly for the G train Ausse decided to leave Narre and try and get a job at Casey Scorpians.. however he didnt succeed in that either..

Yes, but you can't prejudice the draft by explicitly stating that you will only go to a specific club and reject all others.

I think the last guy who got done for that was Brett Chalmers when he said he would only go to the Pies in the 90's ???. Don't know why he bothered really......
