Is it?

Ben McKay - grossly overpaid and a real injury risk.
Gresham - has his moments, but meh.
Goldstein - will be almost 36 by the 2024 season.

Do you really reckon any of these players will get the Cheats into finals, let alone a flag tilt?
Put a side the contract those 3 would play seniors on our team so a team like Essendon it’s good , they gave up nothing for them mate

We should just move to the NFL concept where all free agent compensatory picks are 3rd round picks, regardless of contract.
I like the way the nba does it ..if you lose a player you lose them too bad but if you drafted them you can pay the em more to entice them to stay… they also have the trading down pact .. futures with restrictions and even those futures can be restricted on where you finish …. Ours will evolve it has too becaue currently it’s a joke and teams are rorting it

I’d be happy if the AFL allowed non top 8 sides $100k out of the cap to retain a FA if they recruited them or something along those lines.
NBA also doesn’t have a hard salary cap, has max deals and almost four times less players on the ground/court.
Our game has so unique challenges that need considerations

All three would struggle to break into our 22.
I disagree .. mckay would play with weiters and Gresham would have first crack at half forward .. you think cunners Fogarty and owies are keeping him out .. and I would prefer Goldstein over pitto but hopefully we go the 1 ruck route and play tdk.. my point was more for a free hit Essendon did well besides the contract

Nba is a joke with their salary cap but that’s more of a business to the owners …. I would have something similar after a player becomes a free agent that team that drafted them can put a franchise tag on that player and pay him 20% more but maybe only 1-2 players

* have just managed to trade in FA players that they already have on their list with the same ability, If not worse, but they are more expensive. DumbARSES.
Doesn't matter, those that think trade week is about improving the list are over thinking it. It is for obnoxious Egophiles to prance around and show how tough their bargaining modus operandi is. (Not looking at anyone in particular Dordoro, SOS)
Dordoro 3 FA's
Carlton 0
* Dodoro beating us convincingly as it currently stands.....

Long may they never play finals whilst that knob is driving the recruiting bus.

The crazy thing is as per the AFL compensation make up thingy, Ben McKay (who is an average defender but could become an above average KPD) is worth pick 3 for his old team and Lance Franklin was valued at pick 19 when he left the Hawks

Not saying it's the right way to go about it, but it seems a perverse mixing of 2023salaries, and 2024 salary cap, has seen silly compensation picks.

In fairness, it's not the compensation picks that are silly. It's the salaries that are silly and leading to silly compensation picks. I think if you got rid of restricted free agency you wouldn't have as much of a problem. Clubs are paying massive overs to avoid the other club matching so they can get the player for free. Free agents will still get overs but not to the same extent if you take that out of it.

It seems compensation picks are worked on salary percentage in relation to total salary cap for 2023, and in 2024 total salary cap goes up so percentage is less. Seems bizarre by AFL.

On salaries, I don't mind a club paying 'overs' to attract a FA. If a club has been 'down' and front loading some contracts with a plan to pay 'overs' to get a FA, good on them. My beef is with compensation picks and how it pushes other clubs further down draft order.
Imagine (big hypothetical, I know) that one year 12 players change clubs and they all attract band 1 compensation, and all clubs below are pushed back by 12 picks - eg our original 'natural pick 16' (where we finished '3rd) then becomes pick 28....

And I can also see the point about a side getting in a FA having to pay picks/points to side losing a player. But I wonder what sort of handbrake effect it may have on free agency, and how this could penalise a club that actually has been good with salary cap management. Just me though...

I disagree , all could be options for our team. Gresham, Goldstein & Mckay will enhance the Bombers spine and give them some magic at the feet of 2M Peter, Phillips & Weideman.
I think they’ve done well & their performances will improve noticeably.
Moreover quite a few of our opposition sides have improved again this trade period whilst we are languishing & wondering.
Let’s hope at least 1 or 2 improvements are made by Wednesday.
In Austin we trust.

Z.Williams
E.Hollands
Full
Pre season from Walsh and further improvement from our younger players
Binns/Hollands/Cowan/Lemmey/Okeefe I think we’ll be ok.

Next years trade and draft might be where we go hard for some free agents etc.
