There is salary space available now,

How much is available?

there are potentially issues in later seasons when younger guys like Fyfe and co are worthy of payrises. This is exactly the situation Hawthorn find themselves in at the moment - there's no space for Buddy.

Hawthorn have offered $900k, so I assume there is that + a bit more for negotiation. I would also think their media opportunities which he has been presented with are larger than what we have.

The more I read into this, the more I'm convinced Buddy will be at Freo next season:

1. Arguably in a Premiership Window so are Hawthorn
2. Have the Salary Cap. Maybe. I am not so sure that our position is signifcantly better than Hawthorns, and I also assume that our offer would need to be substantially larger than theirs.
3. Lyons game plan demands a key forward
4. Steve Harris understands Buddy's value as a marketing tool probably more than any other President in the AFL Doubt if anyone has any question about this. But so what. The kind of pressure that it brings made the Tarrant and Croad moves incredibly difficult for the player, the coach and the club. Dockers are financially comfortable, and the only consideration in getting him should be on-field ones, and not just short-term on-field.
5. Recent ability to secure big 'loyal' names: Lyon, Sumich I think we have done poorly in this regard. Basically we made Lyon an offer he could not refuse, and Sumich is here for Lyon, and the chance of a crack at his job sometime in the future.

This doesnt include the 'go-home factor'

I'm sure there are many more data points, like $1,500,000 more........

Buddy FFC 2014

I am just saying I think it is a massive longshot, and the costs won't be the salary. they will come down the track in the form of players. We have MJ coming out of contract and into RFA. Very unlikely he will move, but if he sees a player coming in on $1.5mill, he is not going to be happy with an offer under what his market value is. We also have Z Clarke coming out of contract, and I think we will be vulnerable, especially of he has a good season.

Definitely see where you are coming from, but if the net result was in: Franklin; out: MJ and Zclarke I would be ok with that.

Hawks must be very very upset about this turn of events. Not looking forward to Hill, Fyfe etc getting to the RFA stage.

I can't see it happening. I think Buddy just wants to keep his options open so that if another club makes a better offer then he can formally invite Hawthorn to match it. I reckon he'll stay at the Hawks.

It will cost them a damn sight more than $900 k / season.
It could end up being another Goddard thing where Hawthorn can't possibly match the coin.
This will test Franklin.

On the Hawk's website their CEO has written a letter to their members. Sounds a lot more serious than I first thought.

Dear members and supporters,
On behalf of Hawthorn Football Club I would like to inform you of the status of contract negotiations with Lance Franklin.
The Club has been in discussions with Lance and his manager for a number of months, and has presented Lance with a very strong offer.
Lance has indicated he would like to delay discussion on his contract to the end of the 2013 season.
The Club accepts Lance is within his rights to proceed this way and we will continue to work towards retaining him within the structure of our talented playing list by keeping an open dialogue with Lance and his manager.
Both the Club and its members must be prepared to acknowledge this situation is part of a new football landscape under free agency.
Hawthorn Football Club members and supporters can be assured the Club manages all player contract renegotiations professionally and with the intention of minimising distractions for the Club, players, coaching staff and you – our valued members and supporters.
We can appreciate that Hawthorn members are invested and interested in the Club’s progress with Lance’s contract and you can be guaranteed Hawthorn Football Club’s focus is to retain him.
Yours faithfully
Stuart Fox
CEO

doubt he is going [but sadly could be wrong too] full stop but sadly that wont stop the media beating drums for the whole year going to drive me nuts till he signs or leaves

I think the odds favour him staying too, but it's going to be a hell of a test for your club this year. May actually work out well though from a team point of view.

Aye, but thankfully if there is one thing the club is used to, it's being in the paper every day, curtosey of Mr Kennett :p
