Am I correct in thinking we can load the first year of, say, a three year contract, seeing we have the majority of our stars signed through to 2014, in order to take the offer out of reach of PAFC, then bring Danyle in line with what his actual market value is for 2014 onward?

I believe its total contract value but something like this could work.

I don't think it'll come to this though. I don't know why but I get the feeling Port might just let him walk.

Nope. The two variables are length of contract and total amount.

Sorry, I meant if that first years pay, where we obviously have our best 22 (bar McPharlin) signed and have a significant amount of cap space, were to take the total value of his contract out of Ports reach then we would potentially have him on our list without causing any detriment to our chances of retaining players whose contracts will not be up for renegotiation until next year at the earliest.

We can heavilly front end the contract but it will make no differnce on whether Port can match the offer.

According to SportsNewsFirst (I know) Wellingham and his manager will be meeting with us and the slime later this week. Could we get them both? Would make an impact next season.

I think what GP is saying is that we could offer over the top in the first year just to get him to the club and then years 2 & 3 could be at what Port are currently offering. So, we pay him $800K in year 1, then $400 & $400. Port would then have to come up with a 3 year contract totaling $1.6m which might be too much for them in total.

So, we pay too much to pry him away, then he gets market value after that.

I'm surprised he's only 26. That would increase his value and rgauci might have won a biscuit off me. Wouldn't surprise me if they offered him a 2-3yr deal at $600 or so given his age. Also increases the liklihood that Port may match but I still think they let him go.

Someone on the D&T board just said that Damian Barret has stated that Zac Clarke has asked for a trade back to Victoria. Gutted and shocked if true.

Apparently YM is saying that no matter how much we pay him, it will make no difference to whether Port can match the offer...

I am either having an idiot moment or YM is.

True but that was a deal signed a while ago now based on better performances than those of recent times. Also before Boak, Trengrove, Butcher and I'm sure a few others got paid too.

I'll bet you a Monte Carlo he gets closer to $450k than $800k.

Think you may have read gauci's first post incorrectly, he stated/guessed that Pearce would be on 1.8-2 mill over 4 years which works out at $450 -$500 k a year not $800k,I think he would have been offered minimum $400k to make the move west.
Good to see Freo keeping the so called expert journo's ...clueless,very impressive work done behind the scenes

I think Port will let him go and go for some serious rebuilding with the picks they will get. There are some excellent SA players coming through this year.

I'm happy with the move.

The only problem is, I can see port matching the offer. Who else are they going to be spending their cap on?

Unless Pearce makes it clear that he'll move regardless, I think this one might be a little more difficult than say getting a Goddard from a club with cap problems (alleged before any Saints fans jump down my throat).

You're right, apologies all round.

From Port Adelaide's site here is Pearce' Bio for this year . Numbers look pretty good to me & then you throw the Lyon factor into the equation . All good to me .

Finished fifth in the best and fairest, averaging more than 21 possessions a game (second only to Travis Boak) and relishing the responsibility of a midfield role. He led the club in total kicks (260), handballs received (217) and loose-ball gets (55) and was second in inside 50s (78). Moved to defence late in the year and is expected to spend most of his time playing off half-back, his piercing left boot sure to be a weapon setting up play from the backline. A more complete player, he has plenty to offer.

Cool with me if true, I am happy for an active trade period. He has shown in glimpses what he is capable of and could have a higher trade value than many would imagine. We have Moeller coming in to develop and have other needs to fill.
