Selling Clarke is so short sighted, Our ruck is perfectly set up right now. Leave as is!

Sandilands - Age 29 9 months (missed 10 games 2012, missed 9 games 2011)
Griffin - Age 26 6 months (Also missed multiple games through injury)
Clarke - Age 22 6 months
Moller - Age 18 3 months

It looks good on paper, but if we assume Griff is next in line it could mean 5 years or more before it's Clarke's turn to take the #1 ruck mantle.

From a club perspective I hope we can hold on to him, but from a player perspective I can understand if a number 3 ruckman who is good enough to be rucking for another team wanted out.

Ruckmen are a bit like wicket keepers in that sense. There's only a few positions to go around so it's hard to hold onto reserves who are good enough to be playing for another team.

That's one position what about the rest of our squad? My first choice would be to keep them all but he's value should be good right now so I'd be ok with it just as long as we get quality for quality.

If Clarke goes, we definitely need to get another tall player. Are tall stocks are very low. Would love to trade Clarke for Tippet but not much of a chance if Clarke wants to go to Melbourne

Too many posters on here under-rating Clarke based on his last year as a key forward. Kid is a ruckman and has shown when given the No 1 rucking duties in Sandi´s absence (particularly last year for a short patch) that he is a future gun.

Mobile ruckman who can run all day, take a grab, rack up the possessions are rare as hens teeth. I would be absolutely spewing if we sold him off for a 2nd rounder like Wellingham.

Give Zac another year or two to bulk up from his current 92kg to around 100kg and he will start dominating.

I would much rather trade away Griffin. He is as good as he is ever going to get, whereas Clarke has shown signs he is a very good chance to reach Dean Cox type output.

You may be right about his potential but if the guy wants to go back to Victoria (big if, all based on rumour) we might get a better deal for him now, under contract, then in 12 months when he'll have us against the wall

I think it has more to do with opportunity than wanting to go home. Ross sort of hinted as much when asked why Kep was dropped to make way for Zac in the Adelaide Game. His words were something to the effect of "it is also to give Zac some comfort in his future at this club", when asked why he was brought in for Kep.

If Griff were to be traded instead (Griff would get us a good value trade) it would go some way to allaying Zac´s concerns.

Of course everyone has his price. Clarke for Wellingham - absolutely not, we will come off much worse. A straight swap of Zac Clarke for Mini Draft 2 I have no problem with that!.

This on Facebook's AFL Free Agency,Trade,Draft & Season News :

DAY 1 WASH UP:

Holy Moly! What a day, it was full of speculation and rumours, but it was Fremantle who officially kicked things off, lodging paper work in an attempt to secure restricted free agent Danyle Pearce. Port Adelaide have 72 hours to respond to Fremantle's offer, but it is expected that Port Adelaide will not match the offer, and allow him to walk to Fremantle.

It was then Richmond who...
went next, securing the services of unrestricted free agent Chris Knights. He'll be one to remember in future trivia nights, as he became the very first person in history to change clubs via free agency.

Knights said on SEN that his best friend Ivan Maric convinced him to switch over to Tigerland, telling Knights about the strength of the culture and brother-hood between the players, and was adamant that the club was heading in a very solid direction, with plenty of belief that Richmond could embark on a premiership tilt in the coming years.

But it was the man of the moment, Brendan Goddard who today officially became and Essendon Player. It's been talked about all season that Goddard would be on the move, however nobody anticipated that it would come so quickly.

The bombers put forward an offer, lodged just before 12pm today to make Brendan Goddard an Essendon player. The Saints did have 72 hours to respond to counter offer, however it took less than 5 hours for St Kilda to issue a statement as they conceded they would not match Goddard's demands, stating that "The club is always bigger than the individual".

Essendon have formally made Brendan Goddard an Essendon player, however Brendan Goddard himself is still unaware he has been recruited by the bombers, as he is on a plane to America with now former team mates, to attend Nick Riewoldt's wedding, in which he is in the bridal party. That's going to be one awkward wedding as soon as the players touch down...

Richmond also submitted formal documentation today to the AFL, to secure Troy Chaplin, a deal that has been in the pipe works now for some months. Chaplin has told Port Adelaide he wants to go to Richmond, however Port Adelaide also have 72 hours to respond to match Richmond's offer, as the key backmen is a restricted agent.

Despite the official news of offers and acceptances today to Chris Knights, Brendan Goddard, Troy Chaplin and Danyle Pearce, there were however quite a lot of rumours doing the rounds.

COLLINGWOOD:
Quinten Lynch reportedly knocked back offers from Melbourne and Carlton and has flagged Collingwood as his destination club. According to industry sources, they believe no paperwork was put through to the AFL today, as Collingwood did not lodge it in time, despite the rumour spiralling through Twitter and Facebook as early as 9.30am this morning.

The pies also joined in late as they flagged Jarred Rivers as a man of interest, but you'd think that Rivers is detined to join another club, as much conjecture stands over Collingwood salary cap, given the recent signing of Travis Cloke.

BRISBANE:
Brent Moloney's manager told 1116 SEN that Moloney was happy to go "anywhere" and would "accept the best deal". Brisbane has reportedly offered Moloney a 4 year deal, which Moloney's manager alluded to in the interview on SEN.

Brisbane have also joined the race to secure demon Jarrad Rivers, and despite Geelong meeting several times with Rivers, they did not lodge any paper work today, despite herald sun journalists believing it was a "done deal".

WEST COAST/FREMANTLE:
Sharrod Wellingham landed in Perth yesterday, and today met with West Coast officials to discuss his future. His manager told 1116 SEN that Wellingham would only play for Collingwood, otherwise he would return back to Perth to be with his family. It's understood his preference would be West Coast at this early stage, however Ross Lyon told Fox Footy in Perth that the Dockers intend to meet with Wellingham on Tuesday. West Coast are willing to offer up their first round draft pick, which is currently pick 17 to secure Wellingham from Collingwood. It would mean the pies would enter this years draft with back-to-back picks in the first round; Picks 17 and 18.

RICHMOND:
David Rodan has not yet been delisted by Port Adelaide, but he has been told he will not be offered a new contract, meaning that he becomes a free agent, and can field offers from rival clubs. He officially stated today through his management that he wanted to return back to Victoria, and has nominated Richmond as his preferred destination. The tigers are believed to be interested, however won't make any instant moves to secure him, preferring to keep their options open.

RICHMOND/GWS:
Jacob Surjan has followed the lead of Danyle Pearce, Troy Chaplin and David Rodan and wants out of Port Adelaide. He is eyeing off a return to Victoria, and is also interested in joining Port Adelaide, however he has been strongly linked to the Giants who are set to lodge paper work for him.

PORT ADELAIDE:
It's not all bad news though for Port Adelaide, who could secure discarded Carlton duo, Brent Thornton and Jordan Russell, whilst Paul Bower is also in the mix. Angus Monfries is also considering moving to the power, as they've offered a 4 year deal. They however, are still rumours at this stage.

SYDNEY:
Have stated that they don't want Moloney, however that could change very quickly pending that Jude Bolton announces his retirement. He'd be a direct replacement, and could help Sydney to back to back flags. Won't make any hasty decisions yet.

TRADE NEWS:

COLLINGWOOD/ST KILDA
The pies have now flagged serious interest in making a play for out of contract Jon Giles from GWS, as he knocked back a contract from GWS. The Saints are hot on their heels for Giles, and since losing Goddard this afternoon, they now have plenty of money to play with and as coach Scott Watters stated, they will be aggressive, expect the saints to get him.

ST KILDA/GEELONG/ESSENDON
They've officially joined the hunt for Caddy, but won't have much to offer up to the suns given they won't recieve their compensation for losing Goddard until after the trade period.

The cats are still adamant they can get their man, with an early round compensation pick on the table for losing Ablett.

The Bombers still want Caddy, but are somewhat out of the race, after securing Goddard.

St Kilda have also been heavily linked to Tom Hickey as a possibly trade.

CARLTON:
The blues have been strongly linked to the "Big Melbourne Club" who've made a huge play for Kurt Tippett, the blues reportedly are offering up Bryce Gibbs, but given he's the face of their new membership campaign, i'm not too sure.

SYDNEY:
They've also been strongly linked to Tippett, but I wouldn't expect he'll go anywhere except for either Brisbane or Gold Coast.

WESTERN BULLDOGS:
Late mail came in this afternoon that they're mounting a trade to get Scott Gumbleton from the bombers. The dogs have also rubbished claims that they would trade off picks 5 and 6 to GWS in return for the first selection in the mini draft, and pick 9 overall should the Tigers trade that to GWS to get the rights to Dom Tyson. It's more of a farfetched trade than one that'll actually happen.

The dogs are also mounting a big play to secure young kids Cook (Melbourne) and Toy (Gold Coast).

HAWTHORN:
Maverwick Weller has been heavily linked to the hawks this afternoon, he's out of contract with the suns, and the tasmanian who grew up barracking for the brown and gold would be a valuable pick up for the hawks.

GEELONG:
Shannon Byrnes manager says that he wants to stay a cat, nothing much really said on that front, Geelong would happily keep him if he wanted to stay, but won't move heaven and hell or keep him should he make demands.

MELBOURNE:
Nothing really spoken of today, problem with Melbourne is that not many free agents are interested in going to a bottom 4 club, who are struggling both on and off the field. Despite promising supporters they'll be big players, they're yet to spark any moves or flag players. Cook already wants out, and Gysberts as well as Martin are rumoured to be wanting out in the trade period.

That's all from Day 1! We hope you've enjoyed our updates during the day, and if you've got any questions or thoughts, please feel free to share the in the post below!

wonder what collingwood would prefer 17 or Clarke

if rumours about clarke are true Ross better buy a box of chocolates, a bunch of flowers and take out the old photo album of happy times and bring them to Kep after being seduced into playing Clarke in the semi final. Like a man that neglected his wife who knew all the little things he liked for a young mistress with a smoking bod but had no clue what she was doing. After telling his wife that he was choosing the mistress said mistress left the middle aged man. Ross your straying eye cost us the flag :p

That can't be right. Dave keeps warning us he's going to play hardball and take our first rounder.

Bombers taking Goddard is odd to me -he is very classy and obviously he would of been my preferred target - however I would of thought midfield pace is what they desperately need above all?
They need quality ball use and pace.

They can probably fix pace through the draft, but they won't find many ready-to-go players with Goddard's kicking skills.

Fair enough but I would doubt they are going to find a kid who is a speedster and a walk up start - especially as they are taking another tall with their 1st rounder.

I guess he is just too talented to overlook.

Anyway get Pearce and Hill going - pray we face the Bombers here (without SCOS on Hurley)

I'm sure there's a Lewis Jetta, Isaac Smith or even Ballantyne mature ager out there that could be available for the Bombers. Around the 2nd round mark anyway.

Where they really suffer is rebounding from defence. Goddard's a good get for them.

Bombers have no problem with pace, they have been too pacey in the past and not strong enough to compete against the bigger bodies until this season.
They have plenty of pace
Quality ball use is what they lack.

I am glad we didnt get Goddard, i thought we were getting him but was never convinced it was a good thing.
Like St kilda i think his best is behind him.
So for us to spend so much on a wanted player not a needed player, was a bad idea.

So far free agency looks like being exactly as feared.
The strong get stronger or remain strong for a few more years while the weak get weaker.
Not many decent players will be wanting to leave to go play for a team like Melb, Port etc while the decent players they do have will be wanting to go elsewhere.

Rivers is almost certain to go to Geelong by the sounds of things.
So that keeps their defense in decent shape for a few more years to come.
While Melb will once again have to try and draft a good defender(only to lose him in around 5 years so he can playe elsewhere)

Crap.

Watson - nope, Howlett - nope, Hocking - nope, Stanton - nope, Lonergan - nope

Zhakarakis - tick - ? Colyer (can't kick)

How is that plenty?

Not disputing the strength of getting Goddard nor the need for accurate disposal but they are far from pacey.

Anyways back to us.
