Friday night - Selwood the free kick trickster

Geelong supporters are saying "how are those free kicks Selwood's fault" - but you are ignoring the most important thing; how in hell were they Burgoyne's etc's fault? This is the problem. Selwood is getting high contact that he instigates and he is being rewarded.

I don't see why the head is sacrosanct for everybody expect the person attached to it.

What a truly pathetic example of a player supposedly "ducking" his head in a deliberate attempt to gain a free.

It's as if you're arguing against yourself. This video, in no-way shows Selwood ducking his head. It's actually a perfect example of the way Joel attacks the ball harder than anybody around him, eyes fixed firmly on the football the whole time. He didn't bloody "duck" into that Hawthorn bloke, he simply crashed into him while chasing the pill.

Now, is that worthy of a free? Perhaps not. But the fact is, Selwood is the player going in harder & getting the ball, so chances are he's gonna get more frees than the bloke sitting back getting run into.

Geelong supporters need to get their heads out of their arses.

EVERYONE everyone in the footy world are aware of Selwoods tactic now

Is it possible for the Geelong supporters to drop the "no one goes harder at the ball than Selwood tripe".

Hodge was voted most courageous for a reason ahead of Selwood. (the players are aware of it now)

Why is it the ball player's responsibility to avoid head high contact? Hint: it's not.

Sorry, but you've got this completely wrong.

You want an example of a player ducking into a tackle to win a free kick?

Compare that to the Selwood video and you'll see they're worlds apart.

So you're going to compare Hodge (and most hard mids) who do it every now and again, to Selwood who does it at LEAST 50% of the time?

Not to say Selwood is soft, he clearly isn't, but he ducks an alarmingly large number of times.

You know Selwood has been paid 3 more free kicks than Hodge over the season?

I have never seen Selwood duck and dive into a tackle like Hodge does in that video. If you can show me one, I'd love to see it.

Selwood levers under tackles to evade them. Hodge's effort was pure milking. Just highlighting the difference.

Yes, I'm going to trawl over hours of Geelong game footage to find ONE clip of something EVERYONE has seen Selwood do.

Some of us have better things to do man.

No one is saying Selwood isn't an amazing player. I'm still bitter Thompson snuck in and took him from us. Malthouse was the only coach to talk to Selwood before the draft, and Joel himself was 90% convinced he was going to be a Collingwood player.

But a Geelong supporter denying Selwood ducks, is like a Collingwood supporter denying Leon dives. Take the blinkers off man.

Also, what does the free kick count have to do with ANYTHING?

Hodge might get most of his frees for in the back? Or for having his arms chopped from all the defensive marks he takes? Or pinning his opponents with all the great tackles he lays?

Stop spinning shit, and accept that one of your superstars ducks his head in order to gain an advantage. Good on him for exposing umpire stupidity I say. I wish Travis Cloke and Chris Dawes were better at drawing the free kicks they should be getting.

But move he did.

lol yes he should've just played statues until Selwood could get the ball.

Burgoyne stopped and tried to demonstrate that he wasn't moving towards Selwood as Selwood head rammed him knees. Not Burgoyne's fault Selwood headbutted him, just Selwood milking another one.

Selwood decided to track the footy and make it his first priority. Maybe Burgoyne could have done the same thing, might have same himself a free kick against.

Selwood got to the ball before Burgoyne, it's just that he got his head low and charged. Burgoyne did everything right, including going for the footy.

Even your own Hawks supporters think this is idiotic. Jones had no choice in the matter, Selwood was already through him.

Wrong again. Jones had Selwood by the arm until Selwood leaned to the left to make head high contact. The whistle goes, then Jones lets go. In that order. It's all there on the video.

Steve Johnson dives all the time, I don't have a problem admitting the truth. Selwood doesn't duck his head.

Joel's free kick count has been the justification for this whole witchhunt. Glad you've destroyed that :thumbsu:

does everyone know selwood got 1 free kick last week? no

That's probably be why he played so badly.

He also didn't average as many free kicks in the first 5 weeks when the umpires weren't paying them. He started off the season pretty badly as a result.

It's almost as if he relies on free kicks to play well. And why not?

A free kick is a contested possession. It's also often a clearance. It allows you to extract the ball with plenty of time from what was previously a congested situation.

Free kicks are worth their weight in gold to Selwood.

Joel's free kick count has been the justification for this whole witchhunt

Except it hasn't been.

Rioli gets a lot of free kicks because he catches players holding the ball. Nobody would accuse a play like that of milking a free kick the way Joel does.

The criticism of Selwood is because of the deliberate way he ensures head high contact to himself.

He doesn't duck his head.

You're swimming so deep in the nile you're beyond rescuing.

Next you're going to tell me Reiwoldt doesn't fall over at the slightest hint of contact to draw frees.

Don't ruin a good story with the truth;)

That must explain his poor output for the night then? Or is that TOO truthful for you?

Of course he is.

But in that one bad game, he only got one free. Coincidence?

In summer, ice cream sales hit their peak, but so too do drownings. Does that mean the two are linked?

Yes.

It's common knowledge that too many people swim way too soon after eating ice-cream and as a direct result, drown. :p

On topic, this thread is a joke. I wouldn't classify what Selwood does as head ducking. It's not blatant cheating.

He simply draws high contact in his efforts to slip tackles. Technically the frees are there.

He's getting nervous as he approaches his fifty. Just one more Joel, you can do it.

BTW that one free he got. You know how Cats supporters were complaining about questionable free kicks being paid in the wet in the last quarter of a close final?
