You got me there on those stats. How about these....

Contested Marks: Maguire 12, Rivers 11
Contested Ball Gets: Maguire 9, Rivers 7
Inside 50: Maguire 15, Rivers 4
Rebound 50: Maguire 24, Rivers 29
:D

We could go on forever, stats don't really mean much. Both are very good players. Why don't we call it a stalemate until the end of round 15? ;)
And Riccardo, Maguire is STILL 19!

He has mongrel and a fair bit of it. Maybe a shade too much for this over-sanitised game we call footy. But he is more than happy to put his body on the line and take a buffetting, which in my books, makes him a respectable footballer. Admitted, he does need to curb his anger at times, but I'd rather him when the going gets tough and willing to say, Josh Fraser.

fraser's just rubbish though.

i admit every club has a player that the other 15 hate, but the supporters of that particular club love.

for instance at essendon thier fans love andrew welsh but i hate the guy with a passion. similarly a lot of people dislike michael osborne from hawthorn but he's one of my favourite players.

I aint a big fan of Osborne. He gave Robbie Copeland a decent old whack last year. A late whack and Copeland was fairly dazed afterwards. But he is a Queenslander, so he aint the worst.

Here comes another statsman:rolleyes:

So by your reckoning, Danny Jacobs is a better player than Mal Michael because the stats say so:rolleyes:

i forgot to mention byron pickett - he's in the same mould. i'll never forget what he did to brendan krummel!

Stats really shouldn't be used when comparing players unless there is a significant difference in the most important aspects (goals, marks, clangers, disposals, etc).

too true - ie recently lockett is constantly rated higher than dunstall because he kicked 60 odd more goals...despite the fact dunstalls goals won hawthorn about 5 premierships and locketts goals didn't win much other than the sydney swans some good PR and 1 spot in a grand final.

Oh come on! Put Lockett in front of the supply that Dunstall got for the first decade of his career, and see what his record would be! I'll start the bidding at 1600.

dunstall missed about 30 games worth with his injuries later in his career.

and you have to remember that after 1994 hawthorn became decidedly bad and dunstall still kicked the century in 1996.

And how many games did Lockett miss with injury and suspension?

He played 20 games in 1993-1994 for St Kilda. Only managed 12 of 23 with Sydney in 1997. That's 31 missed games right there, not accounting for the fact that he never played a complete season for Sydney, and I think he had at least one other injury affected season for St Kilda in 1988.

Lockett's record in non-finals years includes:
77 goals as a teenager in 1984, St Kilda came last.
79 goals as a teenager in 1985, St Kilda came last.
117 goals in 1987, St Kilda came 10th.
78 goals in 1989, St Kilda came 12th.
110 goals in 1995, Sydney came 10th.

I think you're bending the facts a little. 1996 was a finals year for Hawthorn, remember? They weren't a bad side that year, they were just middle of the road. And your non-finals years correlate pretty strongly with years when Dunstall was injured.

you make some excellent points but i still feel dunstall is left by the wayside when it comes down to a sheer statistical comparison.

I'm not criticising Dunstall as a player. He is one of the top 10 full-forwards of all time, and that's elite company.

However, the impression I got from your post was that you thought he was better than Lockett, which he wasn't.

well i'm a hawks fan so of course i think he is better - but i came to the game after the two had done thier best work, so i missed most of those lockett seasons you mentioned. i can only read about those i wasn't around to see them. plus the fact i was a fairly narrow hawks supporter up until about the time dunstall retired and then i started broadening my interest in the game to every team.

and now i can't bloody go through a weekend in footy season without watching or listening to on the radio at least 5 or 6 of the 8 games!

But the idea of a backman is to stop your forward getting the ball.... hence the stats are irrelevant.

So Maguire must be one of the best backmen in the league. So again that means that we have the best defence in the comp as we haven't had a score(of any note) kicked against us.

Thanks Mark for the wrap you have given the Saints backline, keep up the good work.

Very impressed with Maguire. Incredible composure for his age. I believe however that Bret Thornton will be the comp's premier defender in another 3-4 seasons. He has come on so well with a bad list around him. Give him a half decent side and he will dominate. And to think he came from the rookie list.

Firstly, rating Sandilands as a future elite player is laughable. The bloke will be a handy ruckman who will provide good service to the Freo midfield by getting his hand to the ball first at stoppages. He will not win games for them...never has, never will. He doesn't really do anything other than win taps....really has minimal effect around the ground a la a fit Gardiner, Primus or King. Elite players are those that can single-handedly win games for your team...I can't be convinced that he can do that for Freo.

On the Dunstall v Lockett discussion, talk amongst the players back when they were both at their peak was that they would have preferred Dunstall in their team as opposed to Lockett. Dunstall kicked goals and also did the hard 1%...not sure if you could say Lockett did too much other than kick goals. Dunstall for me was a better all round footballer.
