I'll be getting myself a pair of these in the next few days in anticipation of MW3 coming out.

Although I am struggling to find stores that are selling these other then Ebay and Turtlebeach website, so if someone could possibly help me out maybe I could find it a tad cheaper at like Harvey Norman, JB or something that would be awesome!
I don't think you'll be able to find any of those locally and if they did they probably wouldn't be cheaper than ebay

Got a gamecom x40 from EB for half price at $49
The plastic box it was in was damaged but there is nothing wrong with the head phones
It sounds ****ing awesome and makes you feel in the game so much more!
No going back now

Good thread.

IMO headsets are invaluable for online FPS games if you want to do it right, but it's disappointing how many people don't set up their surround sound systems correctly when they play console games. They can actually provide an awesome experience when you do it correctly if you want to get into the atmosphere of games and movies.

For a start, the bulk of surround sound systems on the market are just garbage. They run analogue amplifiers inside very confined housings and heat up exceptionally quickly, which decays the audio (and video if you have that plugged into it) quality worse than anything else. Sony's DAV systems use digital amplifiers which seperate the disc audio to the speakers much better and don't heat up anywhere near as much as the $200-$300 system you buy at The Good Guys when you got your TV because it was free/on special.

Secondly, so many people have their amp/surround sound on the wrong setting it's not funny. Settings like 'Multi-Channel Stereo' sound great when you're pressing the buttons, but are terrible for movies and gaming. In order to satisfy the need for people who just dropped a few hundred on their system to hear sound coming out of all 5.1 of their speakers, those settings just take the left/right channels and mix them up to come out of all the speakers, which doesn't do justice to the work the audio designer put into trying to mix all the channels to find the right balance.

Thirdly, the default configuration out of the box for most audio systems is designed to make the system sound loud and good instore, not at home. Often they are calibrated to optimise the sound with all the speakers at the front of the room 'wall of sound' style, which is rubbish. To get the best sound from your system, measure how far your speakers are from where you sit, and then go into the menu of your system and manually enter those values in whatever way it allows you to do. Otherwise, for all your system knows, it thinks your rear speakers are 3 feet away from your front speakers, and adjusts the volume/balance accordingly, when in reality they're 7 feet away from each other.

Fourthly, make sure your speakers are wired in phase and you haven't done any back-to-front. Black wire into black speaker hole, white into white, red into positive, whatever system you use, I don't care, just do it the same for every speaker. Enough said.

Fifthly, place your damn speakers properly. They are called 'rear' speakers for a reason, and they're not meant to go parallel to your head about 2 feet away. Put them up high, and if possible, behind where you sit. Not the end of the world if you can't, but you can't blame the system if it sounds like that enemy is coming up from your left when they're right behind you in actuality. Your front speakers? Not meant to be in front of your TV. Put them at least a few cm's behind the actual screen. Take a listen. Now put them back in front of the TV. Take a listen. Hear what I mean? Your eyes and ears work in sync, and perceive things in sync. Sounds weird when the thing making the sound is 1 foot behind the actual sound itself. Subwoofers - they have phase too. Work out if your sub is in phase or out of phase. Having a sub that's a few ms out of phase with the rest of the audio makes a huge difference.

I could go on with more but really, every surround system should come with the above tips printed in 85 pt font on top of the box.

Yeah having troubles trying to find a pair locally, rang around a few shops today and they had nothing in stock of the model I was after, EB had a bunch of X11's and the new MW3 headsets (Not worth the price), Game had the x31's for about $140 and a few older models, and JB had the PX21 in stock for I think they said $120.

I think I'll just order it from Turtlebeach, they seem to be the cheapest option.

EDIT: Also what are peoples thoughts on the Astro A30's?

What's the quality like compared to the Ear Force DX11's?

Ebay has the Astros at about 130-150$ excluding postage, to expensive? Or well worth it?

astros are from the top shelf.

my a40s are awesome and amazingly well made.

if you buy them, just make sure you get the audio system version of either a30 or a40 cause that will make sure you get all the benefits.

Sound quality will be comparable to the normal ear. Build quality is another thing though.

But as Camo said you need the audio system to really get the most out of it. The audio system is the mixamp that allows for optimum listening.

Yeah Astros seem to be on the expensive side for my budget, the Headsets I was looking at on Ebay didn't include the Audio System so I dont think I'll be going for a headset at that price without the audio system.

At the moment it's a toss up between the Turtle Beach Ear Force DX11 for $130(US) which includes the Audio System or the Tritton AX720.

Yeah I dont think I'll be purchasing a headset without the audio system, really want to experience the 5.1 experience to see how much of an actual advantage it is over people using standard headsets/speakers.

So it's either.

I'm awaiting the arrival of my TB Delta's very very expensive hopefully worth it though and with custom mw3 presets should be nice

Either should be fine, just be wary of Turtle Beach, they don't have the best build quality. So either treat them extremely well or go with the Trittons (even though they aren't the prettiest things).

Yeah I'm starting to warm to the Trittons, the one thing I'm liking is that the Trittons seem to be a bit more larger, and as I seem to have a larger head then normal the Trittons seem to be the most logical for me. Will order a pair through ozgameshop in the next couple of days. Cheers for the help aswell from all.

yeah if you don't have the disposable income they are a little pricey but you do get what you pay for.
i'm actually considering getting another set of the wireless a40's this time (i bought my wired version before the wireless existed) for the other room but i don't actually game enough anymore for it to be worth it...i'm just lazy i guess

i've never actually tried anything other than the astros so have nothing to compare them to but i'm sure for around the 120 mark (total price for everything) you could find something really good. good luck in your search, i'm sure you won't be disappointed.

I've got the old sennheiser HDR120s for wireless. I was considering getting some new headphones though and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I've had a quick look at the Astros a40s and wondered if anyone actually had any first hand knowledge of wireless headphones and comparisons?

These are around 3 years old but the main gripe I have with these headphones is that after ~5 minutes of not receiving sound, they cut off. Unfortunately some genius decided that instead of actually turning the unit off (or stopping any form of sound coming out whatsoever), it just transmits static. They were ~$219 back when I bought them I think, so $199 for the a40s doesn't seem too exorbitant if they really are that good..

as a standalone headphone with no mic/chat abilities or mixamp you will probably get better sound from sennheiser for the same price i guess....especially when you factor in that it's roughly 50 bucks for shipping now on the astro website :thumbsdown:

getting the a40 audio system however gives you everything you could want for gaming and is truly the way to go but bumps the price up to 250+

if i ever need another headset i know where i'll be heading again.

Hmm, interesting. My $10 mic from 6 years ago has never let me down haha, and I don't have to listen to myself anyway!

It's just weighing up whether I should fork out more money or not, and the ones I have now are comfortable and decent quality. I wish there was a site where you could compare them all (even older models)..

The auto-turnoff feature has bugged me for a long time though, especially if you're idle in Vent and you're waiting for someone to speak. It's either put up with the static until they do, or turn them off and you might miss someone.

Hmm.. The quality is decent, maybe I'll stick with these :p That shipping is horrendous.

Turtle Beach PX21 for $87 from Harvey Norman or price match elsewhere?

That's what I did.

Edit: Looks like it's $112 from HN now and other stores aren't any cheaper.

So I've had the PX21s for the last couple of weeks.. I mostly use them with the pc, and after hooking them up to the PS3 the other night and getting much more sound I think they aren't working right with the pc.
Using the volume control on the headphones it seems the game sound is coming through the voice channel, and vice versa.. Any suggestions what I've done wrong here?
