Yep its always been the major flaw with the award. Players from the best teams are at a massive disadvantage.

Either 3 best scores or average the 4 would be the obvious fixes.

Maybe they should at 25% loading to prelims as well?

Or otherwise make Grand finals double and prelims 50% loading.

Sam Walsh back to back.

He wouldn't even get a game at Hawthorn right now.

I wouldn't say it's a massive disadvantage.

In fact, every player that has won the award ever has come from a team that played 3 games, so it really hasn't proven to be a big issue so far.

Players also have come from the best teams, with Sam Walsh the only winner from a non Grand Finalist.

I do agree it has the potential to be an issue and the it should be considered - but it certainly hasn't played out that way so far at all.

Richmond 2020?

I havent looked at any other years...

Neale or Tom Green favourite now I think, both had 4-5 votes and could be in for the four games rarely play a bad game.

Ah yes, I missed that one - but it made no difference at all.

Martin scored 28 coaches votes that finals series. Only 1 other player scored more than 10 (Duncan) and his team also played 4 games. Under the current rules (1.5 weighting for the GF), he would have scored 33 votes and been miles clear of 2nd regardless of the extra game.

As would often be the case, Martin scored 0 votes in the game his team lost but was best on ground in the Semi, the Prelim and the Grand Final. Fully deserving.

Certainly not a case of the best teams being highly disadvantaged with the medallist coming from the premier.

I do agree it is a bit of a flaw in the system - it just hasn't manifested that way yet (suggesting it may be pretty uncommon for it to make much of a difference rather than the best teams being highly disadvantaged, especially with the GF weighting in play).

I feel like Newcombe was a little unlucky in the votes for the semi -final.

The coaches have clearly voted very differently. Happy that Jase Burgoyne got BOG but I thought Newcombe was the other one clearly vying for that and very clearly top 2, with a blanket over a few others a long way behind those top 2.

Newcombe had 8 more possessions than anyone else on the ground. He had the most contested possessions of anyone on the ground. He had the most effective possessions of anyone on the ground. He had the (equal) most clearances of anyone on the ground. He also had 6 tackles, 2 goal assists and the most score involvements and score launches for his team.

Thought it was more of an 8-9 vote game than a 5 vote game (as one coach obviously felt and one didn't).

I agree, I thought Newcombe was BOG clearly, I didn't see the hype of Burgoyne played well but I thought maybe a little bit too much sauce was put on it being his first big game that he has played well.

Norm Smith Medal: Best on Ground in Grand Final

Sam Walsh: only Gary Ayres Award winner to not play in Grand Final

Feels like Heeney will take it now that Holmes is apparently sick.

I’m still big on “The Chad” for the NS

Heeney could do the Norm Smith medal/Gary Ayres Award double (Same year) for sure.
He was obviously BOG against the Giants. Yesterday was a very even performance across the team. He was still very good. Some might have him as BOG. But it’s not clear cut he’ll get the ten votes.

If the Lions win tonight and Zorko has even a very good (not necessarily BOG) game he’s probably in the box seat by dint of playing four games to any Swan’s three.

Heeney got the 10 votes for his performance against GWS. In terms of the game against Port Adelaide....maybe in the 6 to 8 vote range? You could be right.. he might get the full 10 votes.....depends how the coaches saw the game and how they assess it.

Surely Sam Walsh back 2 back
