Simply mind boggling. How could thousands of football fans see this happening and the boys in charge of Melbourne’s list couldn’t?
Bizarre. Felt like they'd done a good job targeting needs (May, Lever, Langdon etc.) in previous years so I was baffled when I heard we were interested.

Probably been worse deals in terms of draft capital etc. but not many this high profile that make less sense for bettering a teams 22.

Lobb would be up there

I think McCrae keeps Grundy if he actually thought he was any good ....
The issue wasn't they thought he was no good. The problem was ruckman aren't worth $1miillion a year no matter how good they are.

The question now for Melbourne is whether they can get Grundy to be some sort of target who can at least bring the ball to ground in the forward half. Rather than a symptom of there forward problems. The fact is Ben Brown maybe the better option up forward. But didn't do a lot last night and certainly won't offer what Grundy can when you need to ruck.

It was simply a case of Luke Jackson leaving and wanting to replace him. The mistake was trying to swap in a player to do what Jackson did in '21. You can't really recreate what other players did, you have to build a new system when a player leaves.

I don't think the problem was wanting to replace Jackson as much as it was targeting the wrong type of player. Grundy and Gawn have both never appeared competent forwards and having one of them stuck at ff for lots of the game is detrimental to their own game and the team. They are both clear no1 rucks, it was incredibly obvious to most that it would play out how it has.

Where would Grundy even go to now?
We'll send him to Freo. They LOVE trading with us.

They take our leftovers regularly, we send House Party Hogan to them for a first round pick that we flipped for a AA full back Steven May.
They coulda had one of the King brothers but they went with Jesse instead and Jesse wrote a car off on a bender before he even played a game.
Love you Jesse!!! Playing good football too for GWS now, not sure how many he managed for Dockers, maybe 5.

Ed Langdon cost a packet of chips. Luke "Doggy Dogs" Jackson is very good player, but two first round picks (one of the currently Pick 4!!!!) and a high second as well, they paid dearly for that.

That said I'd rather keep Brodie, there's very good football to come from him as a Demon.

Don't rate Rowan with Hayes coming back?

Marshall is exceptional around the ground but he lacks a fair bit in the actual ruck contests for mine.

Given our midfield is so crap it hurts us even more (which is not his fault).

Bringing him on as second ruck ala the Paddy Ryder combo seemed to work well.

Jury is out on Hayes as a bonafide ruckman, he has only played 5 games and had 13 hit outs….

Where would Grundy even go to now?

He's one of the most bewildering players in the game. He is still a terrific ruckman averaging 15 disposals, 20+ hitouts (30+ if he's the sole ruck) but there's something about his playing style which has you feeling the cliff face is right around the corner. And it's a testament to just how great he has been given he's still a very solid player.
