I don;t think Ottens will be that big a loss. He's not played outstanding footy for a while. Menzel won't play much, if at all next year. That's a bigger loss.

They still have one of the Ablett compo picks to use. I think they can regenerate.
I'd be looking for a BP to ease Hunt out over the next year, and giving Duncan more mid time with Chapman more up forward, maybe.
Perhaps also use Vardy as a KPF for Pods

Didn't watch the QF? Ottens would definitely be a big loss.

2009
Daniel Menzel - 17
Mitch Duncan - 28
Allen Christensen - 40
Nathan Vardy - 42
Josh Cowan - 56

2009 looks like potentially another 1999. Maybe not as many elite players (Corey, Ling, Chapman, Enright) but five for five with regards to value for pick used (even 1999 had some misses - David Spriggs and Ezra Bray).

Perfectly positioned for at least 1-2 more tilts.

Ideally, you'd want to see West and Vardy become the prime ruckmen, even more games into Duncan, Christensen and Menzel (very hard for the latter, but, he could be a surprise early return) - blokes like Taylor Hunt, Guthrie and Sinclair become part of the mix more often too.

My only concern is who will replace Scarlett at FB when he hangs them up. Taylor and Lonergan probably need a 3rd tall to help them out.

As others have said Ottens is the big loss, if he retires. Simpson and West are good replacements, but Ottens is a Goliath in finals. Hawks, Pies and Blues will give it a very good shake next year, but Geelong probably has one more shot at it (even if we said that last year).

They'll come down after that, because while Christensen, Menzel and co show talent, other clubs have better talent in that age group. The '09 draft was very good for Geelong, but it's not elite talent that will carry them to flags.

I'm interested more in seeing how Hawkins goes next year. Is this the start of him becoming the next gun forward, or is it a flash in the pan?

EDI: Stephen Wells is as responsible as any player for their flag. He's never had a pick under pick 7 and he worked wonders in '09. Sure, he won lotto with Ablett, Scarlett and Hawkins but compare his recent recruiting with the Saints and give him the keys to the city.

The impressive thing about the Cats is their ability to grind out wins, as much as anything. Sure, they can run over the top of opponents, but their self-belief is amazing.

This season alone, they've had a number of wins like that and even their losses weren't by much.

Amazing side.

I think Geelong's reign of dominance is over. Let me finish before you flame me Cats fans. In terms of having a stranglehold over most of the competition and blowing out teams on a regular basis though (ala 2007-2009), i think we'll see a minor decline in their superiority.

However, they are still a hot title contender next year and possibly out to 2013/2014. I have zero doubt they'll be top 4 next year. Winning titles really comes down to two things; securing a a top 4 spot in the h/a season, and being healthy and in-form on the wake of the finals. Like i said, there is no reason they won't be top 4 next year, and i trust Geelong in the finals more than any other team. They just know how to win games period, and they're built for the finals.

As i said, i don't think they'll have another 19 win season next year, but they definitely still have enough to be a top 4 team. With their talent and experience, and assuming they bring the same form into the finals that they did this year, i see no reason they can't go back to back.

This is true.

Their past five H&A seasons look like:

2007: 18-4
2008: 21-1
2009: 18-4
2010: 17-5
2011: 19-3

When you consider that teams in years past have made top four with 13 wins, they have the capacity to 'go backwards' and still place high enough to impact finals.

Think next year people may think the same of our 2010 draft also (Smedts, Guthrie, Horlin - Smith and Schroder). Have to remember that besides Gold Coast, Geelong were the only team to have multiple 1st round picks in the draft.

I'd back in our young players being developed into very good players simply because the club have shown a remarkable ability to do that over the past decade (with their own VFL team and other factors).

I'd say now though, people are being a lot more positive on where this club is headed in the future compared to 12 months ago. Winning a premiership will do that though. :)

we can still have a dominant year, with the inclusion of GWS it bumps up the wins because it means we wont play many good teams twice

think we will lose between 2-6

this geelong team is a lot more balanced, guys like lonners, hawkins and varcoe are becoming genuine players instead of the plodders they were in the past

its harder for weaker teams to beat a well balanced 22 compared to a great 18-19 with 3-4 passengers

we will be more vulnerable when there are a few more kids in the side but not as vulnerable as in the past

i think we will be aiming to finish 2nd or 3rd, but a lot depends on retirements/injuries

I think people have underestimated how much change has happened already. This was our team for the 2007 grand final

FB: Harley, Scarlett, Hunt
HB: Mackie, Milburn, Wojcinski
C: Corey, Bartel, Enright
HF: S.Johnson, Mooney, Selwood
FF: Chapman, N.Ablett, Stokes
Foll: Ottens, Ling, G.Ablett

bench: King, Byrnes, Kelly, Rooke
Coach: Thompson

We have lost 7 players and our coach and have replaced them just fine. A further loss of a few players could well see just as small a difference IMO

Maxy Rooke was a bit void. But it got filled. When Otto goes it will again be a big void, but westy was great in the last half of the season, he can step up and be the next mumford. I think Lingy is under rated amongst some. This time last year I wasnt saying this, but he has been bloody unreal this year. Best tagger going around

It realy depends on two things, 1/ who does go on, and 2/ how fit are they at the end of the year.

The Cats were in about 300% better shape this year than they were last year when it came to finals. Health of the respective lists decided Saturday (and the fact H Shaw is a ^%$# and Daisy was not very smart either)

This is a pretty bold assumption, what the hell makes you think these players aren't elite talent?

Early days, and Menzel could become another Stevie J. Vardy and Christensen show great promise, but I can't see them becoming the next Chappy, Bartel or Ablett. That is the type of talent that has to be replaced to win more flags.

I don't see any reason why we couldn't contend. A lot will come down to how many of our older players go on, and what sort of condition they can keep their bodies in. I would not be very surprised to see Otto, if he keeps playing, to be nursed through the season, building him up for September. Obviously he will have to play through the year, but if there is any sign of him getting niggles then the safest measure would be to give him rest will keeping up the fitness and then slot him a few weeks beforehand, assuming we're in a position to contend. Likewise with Ling, though he is very durable. I don't think he could get any slower, either!

I foresee a lot of youngsters getting games early, in keeping with the rotational policy Scott implemented this year. So I'd expect to see guys like Cowan, Guthrie, Smedts, Horlin-Smith, Mitch Brown and even for instance projects like Ryan Bathie getting multiple games to see what they're made of in the big leagues. Our prospects for staying competitive after our guns retire rest on getting footy into these guys.
