Roast Geelong can't develop young players

Not unreasonable…..

But we’ve played the same amount of top 8 sides as Carlton and the general consensus is that they’re at the top of the tree swatting off potential contenders for a throne they haven’t occupied for a third of a century.

They have played Greater Western Sydney though, and came through that test. Geelong can have something to say about it on Saturday.

Geeling will probably get Tarryn Thomas for free this year 🤣🤣🤣

Although it feels inevitable, I wouldn't put any faith into it being an incredible acquisition as of yet.

There is loooong way to go before Tarryn is even a functioning member of society, let alone dominating on the footy field.

And they also lost to Adelaide in Melbourne, needed "help" to get over the team that just got demolished by West Coast, almost lost to Richmond and really should have lost to Brisbane.

Kudos to Carlton for being 5-1 and Collingwood have shown the past 2 years that consistantly winning close ones can lead to the ultimate success, but outside this past weekend their results have been largely unconvincing

It’s round 7 though, I’d rather my club be unconvincing now then later in the season. Flags aren’t won in April

Any team can have good young players if they throw enough darts (1st round picks) at the dart board and hope some will stick. Considering we have barely had any top 10 picks in nearly 20 years, but have maintained consistent excellence for almost that entire time period makes me think that our player development (young and old) is the best in the league. By quite some distance.

A lot of your best players were either father sons or recruited in from other clubs in that period. Ablett, Hawkins, Scarlett, Dangerfield Cameron all come to mind straight off the top of my head. Not knocking your development, just stating facts.

You're proving his point.

Ablett & Scarlett were average junior footballers. Without Geelongs development, it's highly unlikely they end up at the same level.

Hawkins is the only one who was a non-negotiable star in waiting.

Stewart was mature age too.

Geelong have a good recruiting department but they haven’t had success because of young kids. They’ve topped up on oldies for a decade, hence their list age.

Stewart was playing GFL and available for anyone to draft. Just more good recruitment and development it seems.

Yeah but I’ve read that other recruiters tried to pickup Stewart previously and he refused to move out of the area. Not sure where or how true that is, but I have heard that.

Yes but he was mature age. You are good at picking them.

Wasn’t Kelly mature age as well?

You then traded him out for an even older player.

Like I said, you’ve kept yourself in contention by topping up on mature/old players not developing young kids who often got shafted a spot in the 22.

And I will say this, Cameron trade was risky. It paid off this time but if it didn’t and say he got injured or something it would’ve set you back a lot.

Yes Geelong have a demographic area advantage. Lucky for them Stewart (may have) wanted the farm life, so I wouldn’t say it was a completely genius move on their part of this is true.

Was true with Cameron though.

100% they are excellent recruiters, they also get helped out a lot by having players like Henry and bruhn sook it up and demand to come home, and don’t have to compete with 8 other Melbourne clubs over them, which is extremely good for them, and something the other Victorian clubs would envy.

Now I don’t want to start a fight again with them but imagine you got Naicos for pick 40+ like they did with Hawkins. No doubt they’d give you shit for it. It would be outrageous.
