Nothing confirmed.

But with Ford pulling out of Geelong the cats will be on the hunt for a new sponsor as I can't see Ford continuing to plow money into the footy club.

Looks like their current form is well timed to attract new dollars

Re: Geelong to lose Major Sponsor

If true, it'd be the end of the longest running partnership in VFL/AFL history. Would be sad to see.
They still expect to sell cars in this state - they would have to be wary about withdrawing sponsorship - need to be seen as putting something back into this market. I won't buy another one if they do!!!

Re: Geelong to lose Major Sponsor

The connection between Geelong FC and Ford is too strong. Ford started sponsering the club because of the plant, but it isn't tied to the plant.
Exactly.

If worst comes to worst it gives the GFC a chance to test the waters so to speak.

As long as Ford is still selling cars in Australia, the corporate sponsorships will remain.

Re: Geelong to lose Major Sponsor

I'm sure if Ford stopped sponsoring Geelong could find someone else easily. The 600 unemployed workers should be more of a concern.

Re: Geelong to lose Major Sponsor

I saw Costa on the CH2 news talking about this but due to wife and kids talking heard nothing!
Anybody hear him?

Re: Geelong to lose Major Sponsor

I think it is the longest running partnership in world sport.

VFL/AFL yes, world sport no. Slazenger balls at Wimbledon hold that honour.

Think it is a tad early to say Ford will be pulling out though, although they have had their sponsorship diluted somewhat from the Toyota sponsorship of the AFL.

Re: Geelong to lose Major Sponsor

Petrol prices up, large car sales down, Falcon sales down, not so unlikely, last time I looked Ford was in the buisness of making money, not sponsoring footy clubs, and the AFL has hosed them with Toyota, will want a lot more bang for their buck from Cats sponsorship than AFL is willing to allow I'll bet.

Re: Geelong to lose Major Sponsor

you'd think there'd be some negativity towards ford in geelong after this tho

Re: Geelong to lose Major Sponsor

Their are still 900 Ford employees left in Geelong. Ford aint going anywhere.

You are delusional. Ford has a global strategy to retrench from Australia. And the sponsorship is about as solid as one of Nathan Ablett's tackles. Cats might have nine lives but sponsorships from corporates that are withdrawing don't live on. There is a correlation between corporate withdrawal and no further sponsorship. BHP used to sponsor a soccer team and a rugby league team in the Illawarra. They withdrew from the region and both teams are non-existent. Rip.

Re: Geelong to lose Major Sponsor

Just because they intend to import V6's from overseas does not mean they still don't have advertise...and I can't see much point Ford switching to sponsoring the Kiboto Ninja's in Korea if they are trying to sell Falcons to Australians.

Re: Geelong to lose Major Sponsor

For those talking about the "900" employees.

Just think how many of the Geelong faithful fall into the realms of the 3000 being retrenched.

Whict I agree Geelong /= Ford.

The fact is Geelong is a Ford town - and the association with the town is being gutted from the balls up - I am not sure how the sponsorship can continue!

Isnt that like saying Westcoast = Hungy Jacks
and there pulling there deal because your fans arnt fat enough

ford dont sponser the cats because of ford workers it advertising

Re: Geelong to lose Major Sponsor

You are delusional.
All that has happened is that an engine plant is shutting down. Its a significant drop in the workforce, but its less than half. Its not the first time that retrenchments have been made, and it won't be the last. Other than that there is no announcement from Ford about overall profit or shift in marketing strategy, so things aren't really any different from what they were a week, or a month or a year ago. Ford sponsor the cats for a number of reasons. One really is that it makes good relations with their workforce. Another is marketing, both short term and a real brand entrenchment with the cats that has has been established beyond that of a mere day to day sponsor, such as Hungry Jacks.

One day they will stop sponsoring the cats, but their is nothing to suggest that that day is imminent. And even if it were, we would get more money from Toyota firstly and secondly their is an opportunity for a new major sponsor.

That might be the case with Wimbeledon but i was referring to a sports club not an event.
