The pundits were right all along.
The cracks finally showed up.
That sound.... the window slamming shut..
And the baby has gone with the bath water.

Not really... it was one loss by 8 points to a top 4 team in a gamw where we had multiple chances to win it and failed to do so.
Full credit to Melbourne - they made us play poorly.
So onto this week with Port.

They will be cranky after the Showdown loss. They will be missing a few key players as well - as will we with PFD and potentially Bruhn and Strey being very sore.

Neale also rolled an ankle in the VFL so no doubt he'll be a test at least if not weeks away now.

Port will be all fired up to make amends and Kenny will be looking to extract a win against us old foes.

Expect MOC, Mannagh, Hardie, Clohesy, and Parfitt to all have hands up to come back in.

There seems to be some angst about this game. I'd like to know why Port is considered such a threat.

Cameron is averaging a career high 18 disposals a match + has also lifted his marking average, which is seven per game this year. He is roaming further around the ground, increasing in his involvement in games. His versatility makes him an extremely hard player to defend against.

Hawkins described Cameron + OHenry as hybrid forwards with their marking abilities + excellent ground work.

Now we have 'The Swarm', the nickname given by forwards coach James Rahilly, to our small forwards: Gryan Miers, Tyson Stengle + Bradley Close sprinting around the ground to ignite the Cats' deadly efficient ball movement. They have kicked 29 of Geelong’s 103 goals this year. While they blanket a significant amount of ground, they also offer linking options on either side of the ground when Geelong has possession, or filling gaps when the Cats are defending.

Ventured to the Port Adelaide board, some super negative posts:

"Maybe we'll be allowed to have 22 on the field throughout next week's game - we'd still lose by 8 goals."

"I will not be ruining my Mother’s Day or international nurses day to watch the puss that this team dishes up week in and week out 😡😡😡😡"

"Final Score
Cats 123
Power 57"

"Well, we are stuffed. I got nothing."

"Should be titled vs the Tom Stewart 3 votes donation game.
He is going to take 27 intercept marks against us given our gameplan execution."

"Yea, that's it I'm done. Can't watch until *knuckle is sacked.
This will be a loss, no doubt."

"Friendly reminder: Ken has never beaten his beloved Cats in 6 attempts outside of SA."

"so how can we make sure Ken stays in Geelong"

My favourites:
"Gryan Miers for 30 and 3."

"The G Ryan Masterclass"

"It's gonna get Messi."

Anyway... the early meat tray.

Conway is a monty to go in for Stanley this week. Reports are that the coaching team was split on it last week; this week, after Conway was rested, it's an absolute must.

O'Connor and Parfitt come back; Duncan goes for a rest, Bruhn to miss with injury?

Mannagh will be unlucky to miss out.

I doubt anybody from the 2s backs up after a 5 day break. So something like:

Ins - Conway, Parfitt, O'Connor
Outs - Stanley, Bruhn, Duncan (managed)

Rohan to come into the 22 with Dempsey or Close managed.
They could. It wasn't the hardest game on earth and it's not like the extra 12 hours for the seniors makes all the difference.

We simply should win... but even though we are where we are on the ladder, I'm still not convinced we are that good.

We have gotten the job done almost every week though, so I have to be happy with that at this time of year.
Where do you think we will end up ranked at the end of the season?

Where do you think Port will be ranked?

Because at GMHBA, with them not having Rozee - that's probably worth about 4 spots on your projected ladder.

E.g if you think Port will finish 2nd and Geelong 6th, then a Port victory might be a 50/50 proposition. Otherwise, we will be overwhelming favourites for a reason.

In my eyes, it would be playing them at Adelaide that is more like a 50/50 because I think Geelong will end up a handful of spots higher on the ladder than them.

This is my logical process anyway.

And by the way, I was not extremely confident against Melbourne or Carlton. I thought we'd win a close one and lose a close one from those two.

Great analysis.

On paper this should be a comfortable win. I think the angst of course just comes from the fact that we don’t want to lose a game we should win and lose two in a row.

But I expect our boys to bounce back. They will be mad they didn’t beat melbourne given we had our chances. The forwards will want to have a field day against ports backs and frankly our defence should keep their forwards to a poor return.

Midfield obviously is ports relative strength but that is every game. Indeed maybe we did too well against melbourne in the middle and it threw our game plan off!!

That all makes sense to me.

Question is when Dempsey gets managed. Would expect in the next couple of weeks. I wonder whether Duncan slated for rest in Darwin?

I am really hoping Toby plays and a niggle doesn’t keep him out

Something in my gut is telling me this is going to be a statement game from us. 70pt win..

Probably not, just a weird feeling

To be honest I feel like we need a statement win some time soon. As well as we're going I think our best footy in the first half of 2023 (eg Sydney at home) was better than anything we've produced so far.

Not sure if we're a good team who's still got plenty of improvement. Or if we're a bottom half of the 8 team who has won some close games and benefitted from a fairly kind draw to be 7-1.

I can't see Geelong resting Hawks good mate Duncan in this milestone game,Rohan will get a full game,Conway comes in for Stanley,Parfitt for Clark with O'Connor for Bruhn if the shoulder keeps him out.Tuohy sub.
Surely there won't be much made of Hawkins equalling Selwoods record this week? All the fanfare will be the next game which surely will be GWS at home.

Cats should win this home game. Port have problems. Captain Rozee won't play due to injury. Their forward line is not working. Charlie Dixon and especially Todd Marshall are totally ineffective. Marshall has looked terrible this year. 10 goals total from 8 games is on par with Tomahawk's 9 goals from 7 games. I'd also expect Hawkins to break his 4 match goal drought down at GMHBA.

As is our way we will make one of them look like a superstar this week.

There'll be talk because the current crop of commentators struggle with discussion topics.

JB will probably mention the partnership between him and Selwood 700 times from siren to siren

Geelong coasted after half time in the Magoos after establishing a big lead in the first half. I really don't think it will prevent any of those players playing Friday night. Hardie, Mannagh, Mullin and Humphries all had good games. Hardie has been the standout this year, he could come in for Tanner Bruhn with his shoulder injury. BTW Mullin's speed was on show during the VFL game, and his football skills are developing quickly.

It's more like 24hrs not 12hrs

Those who played Saturday night would have been going through their recovery processes on Sunday

Those who played VFL yesterday would be doing that today

And then we factor in that Port played on Thursday night - not saying it's impossible to back up after playing on Sunday, but wouldn't it make more sense to preference fresh players?

Then when we head up to Darwin which will be off another short break, we have the option to bring in a few fresh players and manage those who need it
