O.Henry is the one most effected by the three tall structure. He won't have to throw is body against a larger opponent to bring to ball to ground. I expect we'll see him get up higher to the wings more
He played higher up the ground when he first arrived in the preseason games.
Seemed to find the footy easily and had some tricks , whilst he's been great closer to goal he could be very good up the ground particularly if his endurance improves.

Obviously some good ins, had to know if Rohan and Guthrie are actually injured or dropped. Guthrie’s career really in the balance and in danger of this being his last season. Great to see Conway keep his spot.
I’d love Hardie to be the answer in the middle as a bit of an accumulator but nothing I’ve seen in the vfl has showed he would offer much at afl level. Maybe he would impress playing at a higher level and I’d like to have a look but I’m not pinning my hopes on it.
Mannagh on the other hand I’d love to see play as a mid at afl level, he could really offer a point of difference in there.
Reminds me of Papley or Toby Greene. Just impactful and unpredictable.

He was another one I had heard was “injured”.

Maybe it is true that Rohan, Guthrie and Stanley are injured (but none were on the injury list - so must have all happened Wednesday!)…but more likely a “niggle” where they would play if selected!

Feels like we're pushing fast forward on this rebuild.

Guthrie, Danger and Rohan all out injured but we drop Parfitt and O'Connor. We're looking for players with higher ceilings than them. Understandable with Parfitt but a touch harsh on O'Connor I think. Hopefully this is a reset for him.

Also left out Bews and Stanley.

We've selected 7 under 22s who didn't play in the 2022 GF (Holmes would have) plus Mullin as inexperienced players.

7 Vets not playing - they are pushing hard with the younger breed and Hardie, Mannagh, Clohesy and Humphries not getting games - not saying they all should but still.... pushing the younguns hard for sure.

I think Clark's kicking will improve

I dont see Hardie as vanilla. I consider someone like humphries as classy for example. Smooth moving and the kicking action on both feet.

Are we referring to Clark's work in the forward line? Clark is good forward and I actually think he is excellent overhead from what I have seen as a junior.

When playing midfield he has s**t his pants a few times and coughed up the ball at both VFL and AFL level - not exactly classy. It will come with time and he will be a very good player for Geelong.
He rushes. It's good he has urgency, but he still lacks that composure the best midfielders have - which they gain through experience and confidence that they can be tackled and still execute.

It's great that he's getting a chance, but maybe we have to temper expectations a little. As a 7 game KPF, it's far more likely that he'll have a stats sheet with 8 disposals and 1 goal, rather than a breakout game of sorts. And that's fine.
I don’t agree that would be fine. The time has come to do more. He needs to make a mark.

I agree that he needs to start doing more to command being picked in the AFL side, and he can't just continue playing good but not great VFL games. And I'm not saying it's fine if he consistently doesn't perform and do enough to justify having a place in the side.

I just mean the reality is that nearly all the best KPF of the last couple of decades (Hawkins, Franklin, Kennedy, Riewoldt etc.) have only averaged ~1 goal/game in their first 10 games or so (albeit they are often as 19yo rather than 21yo).

So to expect Neale to kick 2,3,4.. goals this week is setting expectations too high IMO. The problem is that the dud KPF over the last decade have also averaged ~1 goal a game. So I'm not suggesting he'll be the next Hawkins, nor am I suggesting he'll be delisted in a year. I'm saying we probably won't know that much more after this week either way, so him having a quiet game this week isn't going to be the thing that makes or breaks him in isolation.

I dont really think thats a surprise. Stanley would not get much from playing in the VFL.

In fact id not be surprised if all our 3 emg do not play.

Really , with the heightened due care for players … I think the emgs should be abled to be subbed on. Guys are coming off now for something that would not have bothered many 10 years ago… ( and looking at some of the outcomes, the players will probably be all the better for it)

Ideally he'd develop into something useful at AFL level but even if he doesn't, players can provide value without playing in the AFL especially while he is on a base wage. He the best player in our VFL team. Last year we were completely uncompetitive. Getting smashed each week isn't great for development, as players especially forwards can't mimic the roles they are being prepared for.
Yeah that's fair. But I don't think you draft someone to your AFL list to just be a serviceable VFL player. And if you are going to do that, you might as well pick someone who is 21-23yo who can fill that role but probably has a bit more improvement in them so that the might as least get to the required level at some stage. But as you say, he's on base wage, so it's probably irrelevant.

It this aspect of Neale's game that has me the most concerned if he is expected to be our future FF. Handy on the lead but he is not strong enough. I give him a pass last week but if all three guys play ..then really he should not be hindered by the best defender. Its time.

Are we surprised though?

Only the genuine stars can get away with what he was saying to Scott on the bench after being taken off.

If you don't respect the coach + don't perform at AFL standard, how arrogant would you have to be to think you deserve to play?
What exactly is it reported that he said?

But also wouldn't making him play VFL send a stronger message than just having the week off?

I feel like I missed something here. What did he say?

He had more hype when we drafted him as the in form inside mid in the SANFL, but it was clear early on that his attributes were misread, he wasn't as ready to go as we'd hopped, he wasn't as big as he was billed(he looked small against inside mids at VFL level), he didn't have a special attribute, he is well rounded but everyone fighting for an Inside mid role at AFL level is, and you need a weapon to be put on the flanks.

I doubt anyone is expecting him to be a KPF version of Harley Reid. However , I think taking a pack mark or two would be good. He has the leap , and got his hands to it several times..but failed to bring it down.

Its clear to me that he only has so many kms left (if any) in his legs no point wasting them in the VFL
