Lots of rain around, and seeing on Seven now there's a lot of umbrellas and ponchos

Does anyone happen to know where the Gabba is on the radar? I'm not quite across Brisbane geography

Essentially right on the Brisbane square dot.

Our game is built on winning contested possession then keeping possession (uncontested marks being a part of that). The weather shouldn't pose a problem for the former—we are the number 1 contested possession team, Richmond 14th. But it does pose a problem for the latter.

We're not going to demolish Richmond in contested ball in a Grand Final. I could see it being roughly even or maybe us with a slight edge, but it's never going to be a blowout.

The loss of our ability to play a possession-retention game is massively more significant than any marginal gains we get as far as contested ball is concerned (which is super debatable anyway).

Btw I'm not saying we can't win, all I'm saying is the conditions benefit Richmond way more than us. And I feel like that's a fairly Occam's Razor take tbh. Our entire game is based on retaining possession and the conditions make the more difficult. It stands to reason this doesn't benefit us.

Apparently they had 40mm of rain in 20 minutes earlier. All things going well, we'll have 40mm of tears in 20 minutes from Richmond fans at about 10.30 tonight.

Geez Brisbane you had one job today.

I think people are underestimating the abilities of Geelong in these conditions. You have some seasoned contested ball warriors who thrive on dour battles like tonight, as well as some X-factor types who can seize the rare opportunities that come.

Richmond's intercept and quick rebound approach will be compromised as well.

Cats by 8. **** Richmond.

It's time...

Time to get into "cheer" mode.

The Mrs is in the right shirt for the occasion, so there is that.

Whatever happens, the sun will come up tomorrow.

Ideally, it will do so to greet some very happy Cats players. And a very happy soon-to-be Cats player...

My thought for the day?

If the Cats win tonight, it could not have happened to two better sides!

;)

Exactly.... We live in bloody Geelong where it's always freezing and pissing rain we should be used to it

Unlike some, I actually don't mind if is wet. Hear me out here:

What is the worst thing that could happen in the 1st quarter tonight? The Cats try and play their high-possession game, nerves gets the better of a couple of players which results in some horrible turnovers in bad areas that lead to Richmond goals. A wet ball and wet conditions simplifies things significantly - get down and dirty and kick the freaking ball rather than trying to run it through 18 sets of hands. Basic football = see ball, get ball, kick ball. Get the ball inside 50 quickly to give Hawk good 1-on-1 looks before the defence gets set, otherwise ball on the ground suits the small forwards.

Trying to be too complex and fancy will end badly, as it has before.

Yes it is, I agree. Wet weather hurts our general game plan.

But being a stronger contested team is a positive (and statistically we have been stronger than Richmond in that area over the season), as wet weather football is a contested game. The wet also takes the edge off Richmond's speed, which has troubled us in the past.

EDIT: you will perhaps be surprised to know that Geelong won contested ball comfortably in the round 17 thumping.

Anyway, silver linings and all that.
