The most laughable thing is that the AFL comes out to say "we got this right" or "we got this wrong" - does anyone else see the irony in this?

It's the equivalent of the players being able to pay their own frees.

The AFL needs an independent body to review games and remediate with the league on the things it gets wrong. You can't be the judge and jury in your own trial.

On the Couch last night spent 5 mins talking about how good the Hawks are with their list management, namely trading and late draft picks, only for Jonathan Brown to miss the entire point completely and conclude: “hawks have exploited free agency more than anyone”.

When the jewel in your crown of free agent acquisitions is Chip Frawley and the major loss is Lance Franklin then I'd say that free agency has not favoured us one little bit.

Being a former Brisbane Lion I think Jonathan Brown should recognise the solid we did them when we didn't stand in Luke Hodges way when he cam out of retirement. Hodge by signing his official retirement forms and handing them in allowed the Lions to exploit a loophole in the AFL rules (yes the AFL has plenty of these). This loophole allowed the Lions to keep their compensation pick (pick 19) that they received for losing Tom Rockliff which technically they should've lost because they brought in another free agent in (Luke Hodge). However because he had lodged his retirement papers this little loophole allowed the AFL to get backdoor once again.

Here's the story in case anyone wants some morning reading:

First time since 2010 that Hardwick hasn't had at least one of them.
Clarko just coached his first game without any of Hodge, Lewis, Mitchell or Roughead and got the win so......
Nah the first four, he's never coached a game without at least one of them playing. Ever.

332 odd games and it's the first time. Got the win too.

No pressure Dimma
Actually, it's the third time. Roughead didn't play rounds 21 and 22 last year. We won both games (against Geelong and St Kilda respectively).

maybe he should have been a little more selective with his words such as “hawks have exploited the era of free agency more better than anyone”?

I had a little chuckle at his words too but the show did highlight the reasons behind our success (which was the high draft pick 'steals' and selective trading in of talent).

What a strange article. Massive stretch to claim we were part of this alleged "rort". Potentially we could have got more in compensation if Hodgey had left via free agency. Wouldn't have been much, if anything, but we're certainly not going to ever risk getting slapped with a punishment for draft tampering or whatever this kind of conspiracy is over a 1 pick upgrade in the 3rd round and a 5th round pick.

If you could get away with going to work everyday without having a boss you'd probably jump at the chance too! The fox (not Rupert) is in charge of the hen house and only outside pressure will ever force the AFL to change.

I see it as the role of the clubs to oversee the AFL bureaucracy and keep it honest, unfortunately that bureaucracy is really good at playing them off against one other while consolidating power in its own hands. Unchecked power without accountability always leads to corruption which is what we're seeing.

They won’t, that means they have to be accountable for the mediocrity that they created.

Lance Franklin has never lost to Melbourne. Ironically there are only two teams he doesn't have a net positive win/loss score against: Hawthorn and Sydney.

Well...it's frustrating.
So it's totally OK to open hand the chest now? LOL.

*Edit, OK, so you can get physical before the game starts, could make for some interesting 1989 style tactics?? Hahaha
