With Port offering pick 29 Geelong need to offer 20 to get Watts. Would the Demons be willing to give something back? I wouldn’t be too disappointed with 20 for Watts. But I’d prefer something on top.

I said this before... Is it Animal Farm at the AFL? The rule will apply to all clubs ...but they will apply to some clubs more than others ?
Love how on TR every 4th add break (so every 5mins) they repeat this rule but no one on there mentions it when it applies to the Lever trade.
AFL Media the biggest closed shop in Australia workplace history.

I am worried about 2018. At the moment the ledger is tipped against us. We have already lost Mackie & Lonergan. We will lose Motlop, and probably Menzel, Lang and a few other fringe players. What do we get in return? Perhaps / probably Ablett.

In the past 3 or 4 years we have recruited experienced players to fill the void left by retirees, with the club openly declaring it was doing this because the premiership window was still open. The vibe I am getting now is that the club no longer sees the "window" open, which may be a realistic assessment given our finals performances.

Wells' comments yesterday did nothing to allay my concerns. I just don't like the look of the club going after players like Watts, raising our hopes, and then withdrawing because we cannot afford them or it is all too difficult dealing with the other club. My first question with the Watts comment yesterday was why didn't we check what Melbourne might be looking for before meeting with him twice? Yes, this may be a strategy of Wells to throw others off the scent, but it comes across as "amateurville".

I know things could change in the next week.

I'm not on top of everything trade wise, but from what I've read in the papers, the Dees have been pretty shoddy to deal with regarding Watts - saying one thing one day, then changing their tune the next. So it puts Wells in a frustrating position - he might well best to shut up and not talk to the media until a deal is done, but I admire his honesty and no BS position on nearly all matters.

I’m a proud Koori from Northern Vic, and as you can see by my name I love the brother!
Yeh I may be biased cause he’s Aboriginal but i gotta celebrate another brothers success no matter how frustrated he makes me!
Talented and Deadly footballer just frustrating as hell.
If he leaves so be it!!!
But to see the thread awash with the whole turtle bs makes you wonder why people are even bothering with it???
It’s a forum so people have (and are) entitled to their opinions, but shouldn’t it be on topic??
What’s the thread called???

Ps...

and I disagree because as of 2016 finals the clock stopped for me. We can not add enough players in one hit from mature stocks available to counter the outs ..lets alone improve. The improvement has to be driven from the foundation of the core. Im hoping by hitting the draft hard the next two years its enough to stopping the lemming approach to trade ins and we can get back to adding mature players for needs that arrive due to a failure in your drafting.

I completely respect your viewpoint, and your views may well prove correct. I view it differently, I believe we are within striking distance still, not because we are anything special, but because we have a few special players and thats enough to take you a long way in THIS competition the last few years, maybe even all the way. The more we can give them quality support, the better our chances. Our issues are self-evident. They are (in the Box) complete inability to design a functioning, fluid attacking system. I think we are a very good defensive side, but our ability to move the ball quickly and give our attacking players good looks is below average. (In the head) mental demons coming off a bye etc, got no doubt this is ALL psychological now. And too many poor ball users and decision-makers. We need to try and address the latter as much as we can this trade period.

Listening to Stephen Wells this morning has me wondering if he actually has a pulse these days? They have retirements, de listings and free agents leaving, they can't strike a deal, nobody wants to go there and the only bloke who does is 34 next year. Fundamentally, sports are about failure. If you're watching solely for the sake of glory, you're going to be disappointed...in most sports, even the best team loses every season, and when you have, say, 18 teams competing for one Premiership, many of them will go decades without winning or even getting close. ( hello St.Kilda and Melbourne fans). I'm an older Cats fan and i waited decades for success, i fear i will be waiting a long time to witness it again. It's been a great run. Geelong tried hard to become a destination club, wow, that didn't last long. Maybe we can do the Bali bluff?

Lonely Planet named Bali one of their best destinations for 2015, however they failed to tell you that Bali is mostly a tourist trap. Over 3.27 million people visited the island in 2013, ( 1.14 million Australians visit there each year) and that influx of recent vacationers places a huge strain on infrastructure. It's also massively polluted, like 1,000 garbage trucks just dumped their load outside Eddie's office like polluted. I doubt anybody owns a broom in Bali. If you try to escape the pollution in the land, you'll be greeted by the trash filled beaches. Many tourists who go swimming on the famous Kuta Beach return to shore covered in McDonalds wrappers. The water on that part of the island is filled with sewage the locals let run into the ocean. Tourists swim in whatever the locals flush. The once beautiful Bali is now full of pretentious westerners attending overpriced yoga retreats who will tell you "How zen this place is" in their quest to get spiritually drunk and soulfully laid. The once beautiful Bali is a paradise lost, David Bowie loved it so much he had his ashes scattered there..

Perhaps Geelong is becoming a bit like Bali? A once attractive place, a place where it used to happen? I really thought players would be flocking down there this trade period for the culture, the facilities, the chef? Listening to the mutterings of Stephen Wells this morning so did he.

Fair enough. I don’t think much has changed really Sttew. Got to remember that a lot of the media at this time is just self-generated “news”. Geelong meeting with Watts doesn’t mean anything in isolation. A lot of things have to line up for a trade to take place. And as I’ve said elsewhere, the meeting is necessary in the event that a trade can be done. It merely flags our interest. We would be meeting with a lot of players that we don’t end up getting for one reason or another.

Some very good thoughts here

You don't simply expect in an 18 team competition that the stars leaving other clubs are always going to want to come to Geelong though, are you? Further, if they don't that can't always be explained as a failure on Geelong's behalf, can it?

You need to go back and read my post a few back. Who isn't attainable in the current environment? It all comes down to how ruthless you wanna be. If you trade to set yourself up for a quick rebound tilt, you need to see it through, and achieve outcomes. Going to the draft with pick 19, 20 etc shouldn't be number 1 on the priority list. If it eventuates, it will be because we have failed to achieve desired outcomes.
If you think it just comes down to being ruthless or not I’m afraid we are not going to see eye to eye on this at all.

I’m comfortable with the way Wells operates. Very comfortable.

If being too much of an "inside" team is a problem the surely a player like Watts is a potential solution?

In theory, but it is more dependent on our style. If our style remains the same (which I assume it will under Scott), then Watts won't thrive. In other words he won't have an impact if our style remains the same. It's why Motlop has struggled on occassion. He's an outside player, and would kill it playing for a running flee flowing game style. Watts will struggle to impact when we continue to bomb it long. Him playing his running game, he won't get near it.

Watts averaged 6.5 marks and kicked 40 goals in 2016...so yes he can take those grabs!

His marks and possessions are largely uncontested. He won't be taking those big grabs. So in effect, his presence won't add much to our "bomb it in to the goal square without any system" style.

Watts is exactly the type of guy who will win you games in finals...

No he isn't. You haven't explained why you think so. I've explained why he wouldn't based on reasoning (lacks leadership, he's lethargic and coasts through games.. it's why he was dropped this year). You haven't provided any reasons why you think he will lift in finals. All available information indicates he wouldn't.

He's a good player but somehow you insinuate that he is beneath Geelong Football Club standards?

He's ok. He'd thrive in say Hawthorn with his style playing a Gunston role. But not at Geelong. Our style makes it hard for him to thrive and he enhances our weakness of having a softer underbelly in September due to the type of player he is.

No doubt he'd have some good games for us in the H&A. I could see him playing very well at KP when it's on our terms and open free flowing. But when the going gets tough and we need leaders to stand up, I expect him to drop his head and fade into the background (as he has done throughout his career).

I appreciate the debate and your view, but I think you are off the mark with Watts.

I think Watts is very keen to come to Geelong. If he doesn't make it that shouldn't be seen as a failure on his or Geelong's part. Not all hopes and dreams come to pass. It's still essentially horse trading.

When you want it to be, they can.

Where about sin tassie are you PS? I did the Hobart thing for six or seven years back in the 90s.
I'm from Vic but lived in Tassie for most of my life.

My kids are 5 and 6 and they've been on more planes, trains and boats than most Tasmanians, we travel a bit.

I live on the North-West Coast and lived in Hobart for about two and a half years.

Close to where Ryan Gardner is from is where I live.

Perhaps you see ruthless as a dirty trait, I don't. Nothing wrong with being uncompromising. Its possible to be both fair and ruthless. In fact, I think our 7-11 team epitomised that in many ways. And yes, I want a ruthless List Manager. If you're not operating that way you're always leaving a little extra on the table, and gradually that adds up.

What is Wells like behind closed doors? I got no idea, so I just decide on outcomes.

We can still offer our pick 33 which i think its fair. Its all got to do where Watts wana goes, not what Melbourne wants. But by all reports and by reading it all. I think were waiting for what we get back from Mots so we can bank with that for a 2nd round to use in the draft or use that for Ablett. Its just a waiting game atm
