Sounds like MFC are coercing Oliver to go + play happy families. Purely to save face. Management know the cluster**** has harmed the club, players are leaving, constant media leaks, members are angry + they’re at Mach 10 damage control. Oliver + his manager know MFC are using him as a pawn in this fiasco.

Perhaps it’s an ultimatum? Oliver could agree to play their game on condition they trade with Geelong ???
How could any player believe anything the club tells them after all this. I would not be playing into any ultimatums.

I don't mind the idea of a sort of medium ground compo, although I haven't put a whole lot of thought into it, it was brought up at some point about clubs being able to label (and pay extra) a very small group of players, or a single player only, that is somewhat protected and whereby the club can match the contract offer, if that player leaves then theres a static compo pick for that club, something like end of round 1, no matter ladder position.

Although I'd still prefer just scrapping the ability to match offers AND get rid of compo.

Oliver would be a complete moron to not turn up to the B&F.
There's a very, very good chance that a deal won't be done with anyone. His contract is actually obscene.

He'd be biting off his nose to spite his face if nothing eventuates.
Imagine doing that, not being traded, and then spending 2025 living a miserable life where your team mates think you're a pig of a bloke.

Life is too short.
Luckily that wouldn't impact his looks too much

Yes he does.
1 night can destroy a reputation instantly. I repeat, it's a very, very low chance that a trade is made.

Turn up. deal with it.
And if you move, then all good.

But if you dont turn up, stay, you're in deep shit.

I think you're missing quite an important piece of information here: Oliver is getting paid 1.1 MIL - 1.4 MIL over the next 6 years, whether his club likes him or not. Contracts work both ways.

If Oliver truly feels slighted by his club shopping him a second time (his manager and Connors Sports as a whole might be incredibly pissed and driving a lot of this too), then what's stopping him phoning it in, rocking up to pre-season overweight again, and just getting his weekly check for 80 grand, and treating it as job not a career?

His reputation is being dragged through the fire right now by Pert and co. even though he thought things were turning around, based on media reports and a podcast he did a week ago. He's now been blindsided, and has probably had a gutful. What obligation does he have to interests that are so unstable and so inwardly focused, like the leadership at MFC?

We're all just humans after all. Contract or not, if we end up hating our jobs and want a fresh start, we'll do anything to get there. Would not surprise me in the least if he really has had enough, and completely blows everything up, starting with a scorched earth mediated trade and a proposed new contract that counts the MFC out completely. Something along the lines of 900K with no indexation, would mean Geelong pay his full salary, they get out of the contract, and we give up something like a Future 1st with a Future 3rd coming back (for example).

This isn't impossible, it just entirely depends on what bridges have been burned, and how badly he wants out. If you're liking posts on Instagram that state you'll be playing with your new teammates in Smith and Martin, he's already pretty far gone. What does he care what happens to his reputation, if he's now forced to stay in a place that doesn't want him, in an environment that is purportedly toxic. He can take his cheque, head to the pub or the pokies, snort some blow, and effectively retire early.

If you're unhappy, you really stop giving a shit about the outside noise, lol. He'll then be worth negative assets next year (paying Pick 5 to get rid of him), if they take that gamble. This is on the MFC, not Geelong or Oliver. If they have no loyalty to him, why should he have loyalty to them?

Stanley must be going again given his Farm is our key player acquisition tool!
Happy to keep him on the books as long as he likes if he can lure the big names in!

Is it Geelong only …or is he done with Melb so completely that he would listen to StKilda or whoever who probably got more to offer Melbourne..

Because the way this usually works is the player picks his destination and then it either can or cant get done.
But usually a player won't pick their destination club publicly unless they think there is a good chance that the club will be able to do a deal for them.

If rumours are correct Geelong want to pay 60% of his contract only.
If I'm him. I'm not burning people at the B&F.

I might not be happy playing next year. But I am going to suck it up rather than hand back $300k per year.
And although I'd expect the environment to be destabilised, I'm not going to be the one burning it to the ground.

900 vs 1.3 is around 60%. Cut MFC out via salary sacrifice and indexation sacrifice, and Geelong aren't paying anymore, and Oliver gets where he wants to go. It's still plausible.

These are monster numbers. The difference over the life of a contract ends up being 2.4 MIL, but we're not inside his head, and we don't know what he wants. Maybe he values a new start over extra money where he's miserable. I certainly would. If you gave me a choice of an extra 2 MIL+ when I was already guaranteed 5 MIL+, and staying somewhere I was miserable for 6 years - I wouldn't even think about it. As you yourself said earlier, 'life is short.'

That might be your perspective, but it might not be his. If he chooses not to go to the B+F, maybe the situation has become untenable to him? It's not for us to judge or force our own perspective. We'll just see how it all plays out. Either way, he's just a person.

10000% …. find another way to help the club if tehy have lost talent. Giving a pick in the draft , a device some clal a raffle , is hardly the best way to redress the loss of talent anyway. Maybe a discount on SalCap for player recruitment or be allowed to add an extra kid at the end of the draft …. (yep I will take Dempsey thanks) ….

but draft is collapsing over the distortions within it ..to the point its meaningless as a socialisation . No FA comp and Im leaning towards no Father Son.

$$ vs happiness.......sometimes it's a simple decision.

If I had a guarantee contract with $8-$10 million and I was being treated like shit I would be putting in the most minimal effort in it

You are only human I wouldn’t blame Oliver if he has checked out with a culture like the one being displayed atm.

Realistically Oliver could just take a long break or effectively just retire and just take the payments.

Good job MFC

As others have stated, it wasn’t Oliver that initiated this latest bunfight. If he feels uncomfortable being effectively centre stage amongst over 1000 people all staring at him, giving him their 2 cents worth, having a crack at him after a few sherbets then I don’t blame him.

He can sort things out next week one way or another. And can make a public statement then. He doesn’t need to hang himself out to dry tonight.

Melb have already cleared the way for a star player to miss becuase its in his best interest..why different for any other player.

Having said that…I think most have to grow up a bit BSmith could easily have gone to the B&F, and simply said.. thanks for the 6 years ..and the finals the good times and the bad… etc.. and I will always be grateful for the Dogs giving me my start .. etc…. Its a pro enviorment ..and just as every club welcomes in players , sometime players decide they need a changge. If he gets boo ed or what ever then stands up tall and takes the high road, thanks them and moves off the stage..… (But him saying something about out growing the Dogs was probably not the smartest piece of wordplay ..so who knows)

What woudl be the average …30% of every list started elsewhere? I really like that Joe Daniher thanked Ess as well as Brisbane ..in front of a Brisbane Crowd.

Pretty sure Ablett turned up before going to GC … an over all we must have handled it OK ..as he ended up coming back.

It's almost impossible to see him playing for the MFC next year with 100% commitment...... it's become so incredibly toxic between the two parties that I just can't see how either could have full faith, and invest totally, in the other.

If he still wants to play footy (vs retiring) I can see him being open to negotiating a lesser contract just for peace of mind and far less stress.

Or he can just retire as you suggested and watch the payments roll in.

Surely he wants to leave he scraps his contract and accepts what Geelong will play, otherwise he will have to play it out at Melbourne
