$$ vs happiness.......sometimes it's a simple decision.
Sport is a different ball game.

I have a mate that earns over 2.
But he isn't limited by his age or athletic ability.

Sure, I could drop 30% if it made me feel better because a professional academic life is long.
But if I'm a sportsman? I pretty much know I'm never earning those figures when I'm 35. So I'm not giving away guaranteed cash.

I might give up 50k to help the club. Because after tax its only $400 per week.
But I'm not coughing up $2400 per week.

Unless you're Joe Daniher, or Tom Boyd or Alex Rance.

They gave up millions - different things motivate different people.

And who knows what post-football opportunities open up in a place like Geelong, for a former Geelong player 😇

Melb have already cleared the way for a star player to miss becuase its in his best interest..why different for any other player.

Having said that…I think most have to grow up a bit BSmith could easily have gone to the B&F, and simply said.. thanks for the 6 years ..and the finals the good times and the bad… etc.. and I will always be grateful for the Dogs giving me my start .. etc…. Its a pro enviorment ..and just as every club welcomes in players , sometime players decide they need a changge. If he gets boo ed or what ever then stands up tall and takes the high road, thanks them and moves off the stage..… (But him saying something about out growing the Dogs was probably not the smartest piece of wordplay ..so who knows)

What woudl be the average …30% of every list started elsewhere? I really like that Joe Daniher thanked Ess as well as Brisbane ..in front of a Brisbane Crowd.

Pretty sure Ablett turned up before going to GC … an over all we must have handled it OK ..as he ended up coming back.

Yes, I think Smith’s exit could probably been handled a bit better. I’m not sure he did anything to endear himself to the Dogs faithful by making that statement. To give him the benefit of the doubt it was probably just clumsily worded but he should have been better prepared. His management really should have schooled him in what to say.

It depends on your mental health and how happy you are in life.

Earning 1.3 mil a year and feeling miserable, empty.....or earn $900k and be content, fulfilled?

I'd say some wouldn't struggle with that decision, no matter their profession.

The power dynamics of that club is just off. They have players bigger than the club. It's not healthy
Yep and it's why they won't fire a shot until they fix their issues.

It's actually astonishing how poorly run that club is, considering where it sits in the social sphere.

Surely he wants to leave he scraps his contract and accepts what Geelong will play, otherwise he will have to play it out at Melbourne
How does terminating his contract work?

10000% …. find another way to help the club if tehy have lost talent. Giving a pick in the draft , a device some clal a raffle , is hardly the best way to redress the loss of talent anyway. Maybe a discount on SalCap for player recruitment or be allowed to add an extra kid at the end of the draft …. (yep I will take Dempsey thanks) ….

but draft is collapsing over the distortions within it ..to the point its meaningless as a socialisation . No FA comp and Im leaning towards no Father Son.
Think I need to see what the strategy is for helping the minnow and expansion clubs being pillaged and burnt to the ground without compo. Otherwise, sure get rid of it and be willing to take the comp back to the big Vic teams + Bris, Syd, 2 x SA and 2 x WA. The likes of Norf and St Kilda just won’t survive.

That's exactly right. For most people I doubt the difference between $900k and $1.2 a year is that noticeable - it's already just a lot and enough to set most people up for life.

If you consider that it'd take the average person 10 years to earn $900k, without spending anything, then 5 years at a million bucks is a "standard working life" for most.

He's not exactly going to be poor either way.

They pay him not to play for their club. He gets his base, it's still counted in Melbourne's cap, he spends 6 years in Ibiza.
How does he play for Geelong?

What's this talk i heard just before regards Nathan Krueger??
Does he want back in??
Shirley they Gest.?? Yeah? nah? Yeah?

Fails the first ability rule, availability.

Still, would be a better list filler than a Jeka or Phoenix Foster but I don't really see the point.

lol. Very good. I like that. Made me chuckle.
Agreed on the other points. Jeka Foster are for the TIP.
Disappointing acquisitions considering Foster's first game made him out to be the second coming of Wayne Carey lol.
