Ask and we'll try our best to assist - so here's 2024 Provisional AFL Draft Order

As normal, would like to acknowledge & thank Lore for creating this, keeping it up to date and making it available for all users on BF to use and keep track of the picks ahead of the upcoming draft

I'll also sticky this post to ensure it's easily accessible for discussion of our hypothetical trader

These threads move so fast and I struggle to keep up. Sorry, I'm sure it's been discussed, but where are we at as of now with our direction for this off-field season?

Is Bailey Smith most likely to want to move down the highway? And if so, what's he going to cost? Will our direction for whom we target be dictated by where we land on the ladder?

I rate Bailey Smith, but I don't want to give up too much for him. If we spud it up again and somehow miss finals, I wouldn't want to give up a top-10 pick for Bailey.
A top 10 pick is not really on the cards if we finish 5th - 6th. I'm assuming you mean first round pick - and that's exactly what we'll be paying for him. If anyone thinks an offer outside of that gets it done then they are going to be disappointed.

Hasn't English had multiple concussions and missed most of the pre season because of it. Doubt I would want to offer him a big contract.
It would have to be a factor and consideration which would no doubt be reflected in any contract we offer. I'm not sure how much of any pre-season he has missed, but here is a breakdown of how many games he has played the last six years:

2024 - 18 (so far)

2023 - 23

2022 - 16

2021 - 22

2020 - 18 (reduced games played in a COVID year)

2019 - 20

Surprisingly pretty durable. The thing with concussion, however, as we know it only takes one significant occurence / incident and your career could be over. Looks like 2022 was the year he missed a few games - concussion or something else?

This was the report from the most recent pre-season:

The Western Bulldogs confirm that Tim English suffered some migraine-related symptoms in the weeks prior to the Christmas break.

As he has suffered concussion in the past, the Club wanted to be thorough and diligent in Tim’s management and engaged medical specialists.

As these comprehensive assessments were being completed in late December and early January, Tim was placed in a non-contact training model.

Specialists confirmed that Tim’s symptoms were not related to concussion and more consistent with a migraine.

Tim’s migraine symptoms have now fully resolved and he will progress back into full training over the next week.

Hamstring & concussion issues in 2022 - this is from the 2023 pre-season report:

English battled a number of setbacks across the course of the 2022 season to be limited to just the 16 games last year, with hamstring issues and concussion keeping the 205cm ruckman off the field.

The 25-year-old missed five matches in the first half of the season due to a hamstring injury, while English remained in concussion protocols for multiple weeks to miss a further two matches.

An adductor complaint hampered his pre-season program earlier this month, but a fresh hamstring concern has the Bulldogs tall under an injury cloud once again.

What are your thoughts on chasing him? I'm interested only due to his RFA status, but as we know better than most, this does not mean we won't have to trade for him (Danger, Cameron). It would have to be a big offer to trigger band one for the Dogs, meaning they would be less likely to match, but result in a fair hit to our cap even though we currently appear to have the room with pending retirements.

If we make finals I expect he will cost us our first and second picks with probably a third or fourth round pick back. Should we take him or keep the picks given the retirement and delistings we are likely to have?

Smith won't cost more than a single pick - it'll be done for our first round pick

Don't think we could slide out of the 8 of we tried. Even then looks like the AFL is going to hand Saints a top pick for Battle, Ashcroft and Lombard will get matched in the top 10, possibly Kako as well.

To have a pick in the top 10 selections named with all that going on we'd probably have to finish lower than 10th at least, maybe even 13th

You take him 10 time out of 10. A teenager isn't going to help us develop the kids we have

I know English was named the AA Ruck last year, but it's hard to know if he's really worth that $900k -> $1million mark based on his performances - we only have to go back to 2022 & there was still debate if he was the best ruck at the Bulldogs or if they were better off utilising one of the other options not their list, and if English was more just a super tall midfielder yet to really develop as a ruck

This is how he's performing this season versus his career average stat wise & how it rates against other rucks:

And here's his season averages for stoppage specific stats:

Honestly - I'm reading those stats & his rating in comparison to other rucks, that doesn't look like what you'd want to be seeing from a player who could potentially be in the top 5 or 6 paid rucks in the league, based on suggested salary we should be offering

Is he a clear improvement on Stanley - yes
Has he shown himself to be more durable than our developing youngsters in Conway & Edwards - yes
Does that mean we should throw a huge contract to him - not sure and I have my doubts on that

As long as we hold onto our Future 1st I'd be happy with whatever we had to trade. I don't think we're in a position to be banking on a high ladder finish with any real certainty so the F1 is the one thing I'd be putting off limits. Collingwood are about to be bitten for the second time moving their F1 on.

FWIW The Rumours of Alex Davies may be indeed correct.
Heard closer to the mark was enquiries about a certain Alex Sexton, but that was at last year's trade period.
FWIW keep an eye on what Buku Khamis does. Our interest was more than just a phone call last year.
Still hearing Liam Duggan's name heading back East. So the kid from the Marsh is local ?? Yeah?
A couple from left field ... Heard the name of Norf's Eddie Ford. Why? Not sure, same with Darragh Joyce from the Lions.
On Oliver.
Heard it's a EN OH.
Cheers Boys!

Eddie Ford just re-signed with North last week: https://www.nmfc.com.au/news/1602745/high-flying-forward-signs-new-deal

Nicely summed up - you make some valid points. I am interested, but like you, I have my doubts as to whether he is worth circa $1m per year (even if the cap is going up).

We won't be gettng him for $800K - $850k, so chances are we won't be in the race anyway. I am intriqued by our off-season this year. I am expecting it to be similar to that of 2015 - whether it happens or not will be very interesting to observe.

I'll pose the question again on Davies:

When has a 22+ year old midfielder who was rarely picked for their current club then moved clubs and had a really big impact?

He's 22 and has played 4 games this year and either been subbed on or off in 2 of them. This isn't Jordan Dawson (3rd in the B&F the year he was traded), Jack Steele (traded as a 20 year old), Tanner Bruhn (regularly picked and traded as a 20 year old) or Tom Mitchell (8th in the B&F).

Those talking up Davies sound like those who talked up Brent Prismall. At least Prismall played a bunch more than Davies and was trying to crack a genuinely generational team. He still did nothing at the bombers.

Does Sam Menegola somewhat count?

Rookie drafted by Hawthorn in 2011 as a 19yr old & delisted after 1 year without playing a senior game

Rookie drafted by Fremantle in 2012 as a 20yr old, spent a couple of seasons with them without playing a senior game

Played a year in the WAFL, rookie drafted by us aged 23 in 2015 and went on to play 117 games with us over 8 seasons

Josh Kennedy (Hawks to Swans) would have been 22 or at least very close to perhaps? But I do agree, it's extremely rare or basically non-existent. Doesn't mean it can't happen though, it will one day.
