FA and priority picks you can say affect your pick but F&S and Academy ones not really

Below is purely an example

Geelong has pick 15 before any academy/ F&S picks

Crows bid at pick 2 for Daicos and then pick what ever player at the pick once it is matched Geelong's pick is pushed out to 16

Freo bid at pick 6 for Ashcroft and pick another player again Geelong's pick is pushed out to 17

Add 3 more players for F&S and academy bids and Geelong's pick is now out to 20.

That is 5 players taken off the board that Geelong was never going to be able to pick which leaves them with the best available at that pick what ever it be 15 or pushed out to 20/25/30 it doesn't matter.

In no world was any top 18 F&S or Academy pick actually on the board for anyone except the team who they are the F&S from or an academy player for them.

N Daicos was only ever going to Coll, JUH (due to bullshit) was only ever going to the Dogs, Ashcroft to Bris etc etc they were never on the board.

Now due to the way matching works early picks get pushed back but later picks can come in a lot depending on what picks are used to match.

Either way the whole draft system needs an overhaul or it is fast becoming pointless.

How they could fix or at least un-**** the draft somewhat has already been stated in this thread.

1 get rid of FA compensation
2 stop giving priority picks for clubs ****ing up and let them sink or swim
3 adjust the DVI for F&S and Academy players so you actually have to use good picks to match
You're right, we were never in the hunt for N Daicos, JUH or Ashcroft.

But we were never in the hunt for Harley Reid, McKercher, Cadman or Sheezel either.

A F/S taken ahead of our pick means that player was rated that high by whoever bid on him, and it takes that talent out of the draft WITHOUT using up a draft pick, and that alone reduces the value of our pick simply because it means more talent has been taken out before our pick.

Again, if our pick is at 15, we get the 15ht best player in the draft. If it is pushed out to 25, we get the 25th best player in the draft. And in terms of trade value that DOES matter, irrespective how the picks ahead of ours were taken.

That's F/S and Academy picks. As for FA and priority picks, they are simply added picks that can be used on any player. There is simply no possible argument that they do not devalue every pick that comes after them.

So I repeat, to say that our pick being pushed out doesn't affect its value is just plain wrong.

The difference between these 2 lists is if we had pick 1 we could have selected Reid, McKercher, Cadman, Sheezel etc

Whereas even with pick 1 we were not getting Daicos, JUH, Ashcroft etc hence they were never really on the board.

Exactly - there really is a difference between picks & live picks

No one would question Ashcroft as one of the best couple of players in his draft year, but that doesn’t mean he was actually a viable option or genuine consideration for any team other than Brisbane

So sure, North bid on him at pick 2 but that wasn’t because they thought they could actually acquire his services but rather to make Brisbane pay up - Sheezel was always going to be their selection whether it was at #2 or #3 after a bid

It’s the same for all teams across the draft - those with picks in the first round would have their list of realistic draft targets, while also keeping an eye on Academdy players and F&S players. So while they may bid on such player, it would be done with an understanding that while nice for a bid to not be matched, the other club will have to stump up a few draft picks & then it’s back to the original clubs list of draft options

Any good? Haven’t really heard of him tbh.

Of all the fringe players touted to move clubs this trade period, I like his profile the most. Ready to go inside mid. The problem with all these players is that they are no better than Atkins, Bruhn, Bowes etc so there is no point in them for us. We don't need bodies, we need A grade players. Otherwise we just develop what we have ie hope Bruhn can take the next step, Clark becomes a regular player etc.

He didn’t trade esava for Edwards.

He traded esava for the draft picks.

Who we chose with those draft picks is a totally different transaction.
Semantics. Referencing Humphries & Edwards for years to come will be harrowing for Poort supporters and much easier for us to quantify just how good of a deal it was for us. Great bloke I’m sure but Esava didn’t last much more than half a season before the old ‘can’t play back let’s throw him forward’ and vice versa death spiral played out. 4 years to go 🤠

On Esava, Hinkley is not a smart coach.

Sav competes well and brings the ball to ground so if you have a mobile forward line who can pressure it can work. Like last week when he was really important. So instead Ken brings back the statue in Dixon and lets the Swans walk it out from the back line all night.

The AFL has release their change to the DVI values that applies from 2025, should see the end of pick cycling, the value of 3rd round picks have been gutted

new value = 3000 * (old value - old value of pick 55) /(old value of pick 1 - old value of pick 55)

Looking at the numbers I still think that there is space for abuse in the 2nd round, in the 20s. They took a lazy approach.
Club will still have a liitle bit of wiggle room to rort it but nowhere near as much.

It's much harder getting multiple picks in the 20s than the 30s and still the picks in the 20s arent worth as much.

It's a good move from the AFL and something both of us have mentioned should be done over changing an entire system.

Possibly but you have to maintain some incentive and ability to craft picks for academy/FS selections. Fine balance between making it too easy to accumulate junk picks as we’ve seen or going too far and having a system that doesn’t really allow for realistic trading to occur.
