Ask and we'll try our best to assist - so here's 2024 Provisional AFL Draft Order

As normal, would like to acknowledge & thank Lore for creating this, keeping it up to date and making it available for all users on BF to use and keep track of the picks ahead of the upcoming draft

I'll also sticky this post to ensure it's easily accessible for discussion of our hypothetical trader

Also,

Oliver has one of the worst contracts in the league.
No one is paying a r1 let alone an unprotected r1 that could be top 10, for him. That would be nuts

Didn’t say we just hand over a 2025FR for Oliver straight up. There will obviously be moving pieces etc. I would imagine we move a 2025FR and look at moving back into the second round this year. If we could get Bailey Smith and Oliver and the enter this year’s deep draft with 2xSRs. It would be one of the most incredible off-seasons we’ve ever had.

I would love to see us get Jaques with one pick and go from there.

Been told all the way through that Oliver was not genuine interest. Asked the question but I’m tipping all clubs have at some point.

Things can change quickly though. If there’s a purge coming at the Dees then we might see this change quickly.

If the Dees pick up $250k a year of that contract (for the remainder of its term) and throw in a FR1 or 2x FR2 (Bowes style deal) I reckon we’d be all over it like a fat kid on a cupcake.

We met with him very recently.

imo… as with any trade..I think the bottom line is what it cost versus potential reward. What would Oliver bring us while we still have Danger and Cameron. Is he healthy?

Would we pay the Fr1 ..if we only take half his money (for example) . Melb do have a history with Grundy of keep big numbers on their cap to be rid of someone they wanted gone.

If take all his money id think he should almost be for free or a late pick exchange.

Would it be fair to say.. historically we prefer to protect our cap more than our picks. What would you say an ideal trade would be?

The thing about Clayton AND Smith is that it likely does stifle the ability for Jhye Clark to break through and it could diminish the roles and capacity of the likes of Bowes and Bruhn and Atkins.

But alongside Dangerfield and Holmes if both can play good football or better then who cares. We're becoming quite a bit better in the midfield. Adapt or die.

I think we'd be gambling on what we already have more than what we'd be giving up.

Does Dangerfield have another year
Do Cameron and Stewart still perform at the top level.

We make top 8 next year then a future 1st rounder doesn't hurt that much, between the changes to academy rules and FA compensation you're looking at a mid to late teens pick.

For all the fear around Oliver though, FishGutz is right, we almost owe it to ourselves to try.

10 points off a GF with Humphries, Dempsey, Holmes, Henry, & Mannagh all playing leagues above their current contracts.

Neale & Bruhn showing promise, with Clark, Conway, SDK, & COS waiting in the wings.

There has to be rational thinking here, but there's also an emotional element that we'd be doing ourselves a disservice if we didn't give it a try.

Providing it doesn't cost the world (E.g multiple first round picks) if it goes wrong, then it so be it.

We made an informed decision at the time to give ourselves the best chance for the 2025 season.

I'd think even 1 x first round pick is too much for Oliver

The deal between Collingwood & Melbourne for Brodie Grundy was pick 27, the deal last year between Melbourne & Sydney was pick 46 & 2024 2nd round pick - that's with Collingwood reportedly paying $300k per season of his $900k per season salary, and that's for each of the 5 years remaining on his deal when he moved on after 2022

Oliver still has 6 years left on a deal that was $7 million over 7 years - so looking at potentially $1 million for each of the next 6 years, unless it was say a backended contract which would make it even more unbalanced

Even if Melbourne end up paying $300k per year of his remaining years, surely no one is paying more than a second or maybe third at most

I agree, poorly phrased on my behalf.

I meant multiple first round picks in regards to Smith and Oliver.

Fwiw Melbourne (according to Ralph) have just come out and said Oliver is a required player and will be playing for them next season, and don’t know where this new talk has come from

Yay!

I love it

We've got some saying we've got genuine interest in Oliver and potentially all in for him

Others saying we've got no serious interest

I'm curious how this plays out
I honestly ( my personal view and I know everything 🙄)
I honestly can't see a deal get done. With the huge contract his on plus been contracted till 2030, Melbourne holds all the correct cards and they can say what they want...
The only thing is if they want the salary of there books, but we will have to pay huge money for a bloke who has huge reward, but huge risk as well

Cheers, I thought you meant Oliver specifically

Obviously there's risks with both players and it comes down to how much & what you're willing to risk for potential reward

Yeah, definitely. I’ve been saying it on here for a while. My belief is use up our 2024FR and 2025FR. Load up for a premiership tilt in 2025 with Danger. Aim to get a free agent in 2025 for free for a change. If we don’t have trade assets, sides won’t match. And then 2026 is when we launch for Harley Reid and also target some other big name free agents who have been mentioned in here in the past, on the same premise that if we don’t have the picks, they won’t match. The club is being genius with their plays in my opinion and defining “rebuilding on the run.”

We have such good youth and such elite older talent. We just need those couple of elite prime aged midfielders to launch us into a different tier.

Well I will say your are quite bold in your thinking

My conservative hat on suggests Oliver coming in screams risk

Where is this "SDK was so out of form" dribble coming from? He was a KPD up until Rd 14. He never had a bag kicked on him, in my assessment his form was perfectly fine. Are posters on here explaining his move into the ruck due to him being out of form as a KPD? Because that is a reach and honestly there's not much evidence.

Also, your "he finished the year in the VFL" is a little misleading without providing the context.
Don't agree at all he was poor this year.

Too many clubs focus on being conservative not threatening the future and hopefully building for a flag one day. Those that win actually shoot for the green. Not just the fairway.

That's a Stan The Caddy reference as well.
You could expand on that , courtesy of the great Lee Trevino " There are 2 things that wont last long in this world and thats dogs chasing cars , and Pro Golfers who putt for pars " .

I don't think they necessarily have to throw him out. If they could move him on for something they wouldn't mind.

I'm being told that there is chat amongst Hawks fans about Smith having a late change of heart and wanting them.....

True or not, it got me thinking....... what are our thoughts, and where to from here, if Smith DID go somewhere else?

As much as I want him, I would have to laugh if he went to hawks after the constant “he’s bought a house and got the keys” and “why are we even talking about this my super inside sources have told me it’s been locked in for the last 12 months” chat from some people
