Here's 2024 Provisional AFL Draft Order

Cheers to Lore for their hard work in setting this up, and making it available for all users on BF to use and keep track of the picks ahead of the upcoming draft - and please practice patience grasshoppers if it's not updated in the immediate aftermath of completed trade

I'll also sticky this post to ensure it's easily accessible for discussion of our hypothetical trader

Also,

2024 Free Agency Period

The AFL introduced free agency at the end of the 2012 season, giving players another vehicle where they can transfer from one club to another. Free agency is a common form of player movement in major football and sporting codes around the world.

Free Agency Opens: Friday October 4 at 9.00am
Free Agency Closes: Friday October 11 at 5.00pm

Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period

Trade Period Opens: Monday October 7 at 9.00am
Trade Period Closes: Wednesday October 16 at 7.30pm

What is your rational?

Imo their core is good and young but it is their players on the periphery who are lacklustre, that poor bottom 6-8 that kills you in finals but not at the lower standard of the H&A season.
And I'll add that despite fielding a younger team than Hawks they're relatively experienced in finals

Have to be honest, I don't mind a good troll every now and again but I'm pretty frustrated with the amount of garbage Geelong has received by opposition fans this year.
This whole Bailey Smith saga . . . there's been some truly appalling commentary. It's brought out the worst in all supporters. Don't mind if Doggie supporters are disgruntled by we are copping from Richmond, Hawthorn (were dead silent for a few years and now they're back and chirpy as f*ck) and Carlton.
Carlton! Do they not remember they recently got done for salary cap rorting and here they are hanging sh*t on us.

Nothing worse seeing clubs tank, poach all the best talent in the land for years on end, rise back up the ladder and start mouthing off. As if they should be respected.
This. I do like the melting but those 3 clubs in particular seem to have the worst fans.

Hawthorn fans only support for the Glory, they are nowhere to be seen when down the bottom.

Carlton are hard to respect with the cheating past, getting players from being rubbish and still can’t win with all the gifts given. At least Melbourne won a flag after being handed everything.

Richmond well…. We’ve all seen them around here. They are scarred from many years of torture it seems.

Agree. Some of it has been unedifying - read pathetic. It accompanies being successful I guess - ie envy.

I think it's a good pick up, they have a young but solid midfield, worst case scenario he replaces Houston down back, best case scenario they have a working forward line. As long as they don't get smashed with injuries next year they should make the 8.

Guy was drafted to the wrong club, at pretty much any other club he would have grown into a franchise player.
People bash lukosious but i think with the right role and coach he could be bloody good.

He screams the type of player scott would turn into an elite with.

I could see scott using him as a roaming intercept type across HB and using his elite kicking to cut through the corridor.

He is not a key forward at the elite level from what i can see, but a roaming back half utility/winger with penetrating skills.

I've been firmly in the "do not want Oliver" group of supporters but if the club do go after him this final week, can only back in their better judgement and be all in for the cause.
I guess if anything, having a strong bull still in their prime can only be beneficial to Clark, Holmes and Bruhn.
That's the issue. I think too many see him as he was years ago when he was racking up best B & F trophies. That said, I trust the movers-n-shakers to make to right call and on the right conditions. Doubt he'll be in the hoops next year though.

Me too - but i must trust the club as much as I hate it . . .

Do the Demons want a player that has checked out on their books for 6 more years.

Whatever Oliver's issues are, very rarely are they solved by staying in the same place. Starting afresh is always the first step.

I think the Demons are saying all the right things but I reckon Geelong showed Oliver the greener grass. There's usually no way back from that.

I really expect him to end up with us in the end.

Surely if Port acquire Lukocious they will deploy him in the F50.

He, Georgiades and Rioli are something to build around without putting all their chips in with frailer prospects like Marshall and Dixon.

The thing that irritates me the most about the AFL is the freebies that are handed out as a reward for being shit.

I understand why equalisation matters, and I think the draft and salary cap are very important. But one-off handouts like priority picks? Give me a break. The right way to do it is to set the system up so that equalisation does its job, and then it should be up to the clubs.

The thing about Geelong, and I’m not just saying this because I’m a supporter, is that we are the best run club in the AFL. It’s undeniably true. Only Sydney comes close, and no surprise that their on field record over the past 25 years is pretty impressive too.

The only “advantage” we’ve had is father-son, and that’s equally available to all clubs other than GWS and GC, but they’ve both had so many other advantages it really doesn’t matter in their case. We’ve had no priority picks, very few top 10 draft picks, no COLA, no handouts. Nothing. We’ve bucked the system by playing the off field game better.

These salty supporters of other clubs are either jealous, or can’t get their heads around the fact that their own club is simply incompetent in comparison. It comes with the territory of being good. Tall poppy syndrome alive and well.

Am I correct in reading that GC are willing to give up pick six (!) for a 27yo Daniel Rioli, and Richmond are not only rejecting it but are asking for pick 13 as well?

That's utter madness, the guy is a slightly above average HBF who will turn 28 not long after next season starts. At least with the Bowes deal we chewed up a bunch of salary cap space, this is bonkers.

Spot on. And the one thing we haven't done to this point is go all in on an expensive potential culture bomb like Fevola, Stringer or De Goey, which is why I'm shit scared of taking Oliver and his six year, $8.5m contract on.

IF it works out then we are set for years. Massive if. But if it goes sour then I'd think we'll soon be looking at the pointy end of the draft for the first time.

It's insane. I mean it's GCS so anything could happen but I refuse to believe that is possible.

If I'm the suns I'm trading 6 out for multiple futures now the way West Coast did with Barrass and pick 14. Richmond won't turn down a fair trade at the 11th hour. He's not a structurally important player and they'll get more from him leaving than staying.

We were chasing De Goey 2 years ago when he was almost getting delisted for cultural issues the he turned around and became one of their best players in a premiership year. We never chased Fevola afaik and we went cold on stringer the day we met him. We went for Jack Steven but were wise enough to do it for zero capital at risk.

looks like a good endorsement of our judgement of character though history might consider it hubris

We absolutely spoke to all three mentioned including Fevola. Nobody questioned JDGs talent but plenty of Cats fans made it clear they didn't want a dickhead like that at the club.

The draft/trade board is a mess of conspiracies and all-round nuffery. It's best to just feed in to the delusions about Geelong rorting the comp like we do with the Richmond cookers about Hocking running the comp from the shadows. They're too far gone to engage with in a genuine way.

That rolls both ways though. Fridges and other electrical goods built today don't last long enough to get resold. I saw a house in a suburb that was pretty cheap in Adelaide 15 years ago the other day list for 1.4m and it had been gutted by fire. You can't get cheap second hand fridges or houses. I recently resold a BA falcon I bought ten years ago, put 100k on the odo. Bought at $7k in pristine condition for a 10 year old car, sold for $5k needing work.

Young people today are so utterly f***ed it blows my mind. Let them buy a yaris or a dachshund if it takes their mind off the fact they will never retire.
Glad someone said it. It's grim out there for a lot of people under 40.

We need Clayton Oliver to come to the Cats so our fans have a new banner to display -

OLI (Dempsey)
OLI (Henry)
OLI (Clayton Oliver)
OI
OI
OI

It could possibly still work if Oli Wiltshire improves a LOT.

Personally i think he is a better defender or winger than forward especially how modern footy is played, not to say he is a bad forward

According to my dogs source, Brad Close was the player they initially wanted included in the Smith deal. Apparently we had absolutely no interest in that suggestion.

Why do the Bulldogs want more forwards?

Besides, isn't Close touted as being part of the future Butter's trade

Geelong really dont have many players that we would consider trading out.

Knevitt maybe, if there were interested parties. I think if there were, we would have heard about them..
O'Connor, would be a possibility. I can see him having heavy competition for spots next season.
and only if there was a very compelling trade, Jhye Clark.
